Running your Corvette in O/D

I went to Bowtech with my sights set on a speed demon. I got just what they told me they'd give me.....with my 82nd Airborne.

Then came the realization that the speed came at a price. Draw cycle. Shooting it once or 6 times in the shop before ordering.....I didn't give it much thought. I had the Chrono still fresh on my brain. But make no mistake......it's not your daddy's draw cycle.

So.....initially I just set it up at 62#'s. Fair enough......and a screamer at that.

What I've found...since turning it down a little further.....is a happy median between speed demon and old man. I'm probably pulling 60#'s, now.....and I'm guessing STILL pushing 320 or better.

This is the real deal for me NOW. The difference in the draw from 70 to 60#'s is incredible. If you're thinking of this bow....I STRONGLY urge you to look at the 60# limbs.

Just a suggestion.

RE: Running your Corvette in O/D

Jeff, that is what I've come to conclude after many years of searching for speed and pushing the limits with hatchet cam bows. You can get blazing speeds, but you have to give up something. With the 82nd it is draw cycle and brace height. The same goes with the XForce. With the Iron Mace it is shooting a lighter arrow and draw cycle.

I have always pursued speed because I have a short draw length so want to make up for that to attain higher KE becaue I like to shoot wide cutting expandables. The bow still has to be huntable though. My current bow is a dream on the draw cycle, but still leaves me wanting more speed. My last bow, the Allegiance was probably the best blend I've found thus far. The draw was acceptable and the speed was more than adequate.

When I drew the 82nd for the first time I was actually pleasantly surprised. Surprised enough that I considered the bow and shot it at my shop and was lucky enough that they had a lefty for me to try. After about a dozen shots that last hump to drop into the very short valley had made my mind up for me. No doubt it is a great bow, but not what I'm looking for to hunt with.

I think Bowtech is on the verge of creating the perfect bow for me. A bow with a 340+ IBO, with a decent brace, and a draw that I would be comfortable with at around 65# and can easily get back on a cold January day after sitting for 4 hours. I suspect that this bow is right on the horizon for the next year or two with the direction they've been taking. We'll see.

RE: Running your Corvette in O/D

Hey I have no issues witht he bow as a hunting bow.....and that's where it'll find its home in my stable. But it was "I" who made the mistake.....thinking I was going to find the perfect target/hunting combo. It's just too harsh a cycle for ME to pull 60-75 times in a session. For others it may be perfect.

And....it WILL be perfectly acceptable at the lower poundage....and still outperform 90% of the bows out there.

My post was to tell others.....if you're thinking of shooting this bow a LOT (Im 6'1"/200#'s).....then you "might" wanna consider it in the 60# limbed version. For a pure hunting bow.....I'd throw it on 65#'s and not worry about it.

I know this bow's popular....and gaining momentum. My post is merely a "suggestion".;)

Boy I should head to the Archives and find the Hardcorehunter Post when he strongly suggested we all do just that! (60# in lieu of 70#) You may have been a naysayer in that one.. I know buddy..we all live and learn! ;)

GMMAT 02-20-2008 08:14 AM

RE: Running your Corvette in O/D

I'm STILL a naysayer in that. Make no mistake about it.

THIS BOW is "different". If I were shooting an ALLY, still....I'd shoot it at 71#'s to hunt with. If I were shooting a Mathews....NO PROBLEM.

(You see a pattern?)

I'm making a suggestion for people interested in THIS BOW (the 82nd). Nothing more.

Let's put it this way, GR8.....if you can pull this bow back at 70#'s and it not affect you.......you're the man! And I think you SHOULD shoot it (hunting-wise) at the higher #-age (WHY NOT?????). I think everyone should shoot the highest poundage they can comfortably shoot to hunt with......be that 60 or 90#'s.

You are absolutely right on that bow and 60#'s. When I started bow hunting, a little over 16 yrs. ago, I shot an 80# bow. Since then I have always shot 70#"s because that is whats comfortable for me. When I shot that 60# 82nd. at the shop, it was a no-brainer, I promptly placed an order. Why shoot 70#'s when you can shoot 60# and still be smoking an arrow faster than most 70# bows? It saves on shoulder wear and tear, allows you to draw more comfortably from awkward positions, and allows you to shoot longer with less fatigue. What's not to like? Glad to hear the 60# thing is working out for you.

What did that arrow weigh Jeff?

Mine shot a 407-410 grainer at 285-287fps. It shot the 300gr arrow at 322fps. (Both at 58/59 lbs).

I'll be putting the 60/70's on for sure. At least after turkey season...

Heck I made the same comments after getting the Iron Mace last year. I'm shooting 61#s and getting 327 with the target IBO legal set up... why the heck would I want to shoot 70#s? Why would anyone want to shoot 70#s when they can do the same thing at 60#s now that four years ago we were doing at 70#s.... how far in the ground you want your arrow to stick anyway?

GMMAT 02-20-2008 11:00 AM

RE: Running your Corvette in O/D

You guys are missing my point.

I am STILL an advocate of a man shooting all he feels comfortable shooting. Is there really a debte as to whether or not 70# is better than 60#? If you can shoot the higher poundage....by all means....let 'er rip.

Dub....those speeds are with a 327gr. target arrow. I'll let you know what my hunting arrow does when I get it set up fro that....and when I get my chrono[8D]. My hunting arrow will be 427gr. I'm guessing 300fps or so at 62#'s......but that's a complete guess.

Didn't I tell you this last summer and you told me 70#s was the only way? A bow performs best at peak weight so instead of turning a 70# bow down to 60#, crank your 50-60 # bow all the way up which with my Tribute and Guardian is 61 and 62 #. 70 # bows are dumb IMO in todays fast and highly efficient bows.Glad to see you have seen the light."[8D]

Don:

If 60 is so good.....why don't you just go on down and shoot 40?

I mean really.....it would be easier to pull back....and hell, it's legal!

If a man has NO ISSUES pulling 70#'s.....he is shooting (in most instances) a faster arrow.....and creating more KE witht he added #'s of DW.

There is NO LOGIC if you get OFF the premise that people are having issues witht he DW at 70#'s. NO LOGIC.

RE: Running your Corvette in O/D

70 # bows are dumb IMO in todays fast and highly efficient bows.
If one of todays60lb bows is fast and efficient then it's only logical that it's 70lb counterpart (all things being equal, same bow set up etc...) would bring more to the table than the 60lb would. So if you're strong enough to pull back a 70lb bow with no problems, why not go with the 70 lb bow? It can only hit harder due to the extra arrow weight, even if the speeds are the same. If you're not strong enough stick with the 60's

I think what Jeff is trying to say is that with this particular bow he finds the 70lb draw cycle to be harsher that the normal 70lb bows on the market and is giving a heads up to potential buyers who may be at their strengthlimit with their existing 70lb bow. Those folks will still get the performance they seek but don't need to do it in a 70lb package.

Yes, today's bows are fast and highly efficient and getting better each year. The great thing about today's bows is that they make one to suit everyone's taste. 70# bows are dumb in your opinion and that is your taste.

Here is why they are not dumb for my tastes:
[ol][*]I have a 27.5 inch draw and like a smoother drawing bow for hunting that will still move a 425 grain+ arrow at a speed that will ensure good penetration with any broadhead I choose. With a 27.5 inch draw you can knock 25 fps right off of every IBO speed, most of which are inflated anyway. Draw weight will keep that speed, especially with a heavier arrow.[*]Most bows are 80% let-off standard and adjustments in let-off also often change draw length and valley which are both negatives IMO. A 60 lb. bowwith an 80% let-off will have a 12 lb. hold weight. For me, anything less than 15 lbs. of hold weight and I find myself creeping. I prefer 17-18 lbs. of hold weight.[*]I am comfortable shooting out to 40 yards at game, though I won't do it unless conditions are right. At a lower draw weight, with a heavier arrow, and a short draw length a miscalculation of yardage becomes much more critical. That comfort zone is diminished.[*]Why buy a speed demon bow that you have to crank down to under 60#s to shoot comfortably when you can have a smooth drawing bow that you can shoot at whatever draw weight you want? There is nothing wrong with either, just a personal preference.[/ol]
So, while a 70# bow may be dumb for your applications we all have different needs and desires in a bow. I'll keep my dumb 70# limbs thanks.;)

Let's see; I can shoot a 70# bow comfortably and Ijust made the switch to 60# last year after these forums taught me info that helped my decision. Now lets's see, I live in a state that has hugeIbex, Oryx, elk, bear, mountain lion, antelope, javelina, 3 deer species, and turkey; and yet I don't feel the need to return to 70# bows???? I MUST BE CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 90% of the 70# pro advocates live in states with only two big game animals; a deer and a turkey, and this is all they will hunt. Just making observations

I guess you feel that shooting a bow with max 60# limbs suits your tastes. For me and many others it doesn't.

Why do you care so much about what others choose to shoot? As long as someone isn't overbowing themselves what difference does it make, other than having more KE than they may need?

I think an advantage of adjustable DW that a lot a folks don't take advantage of is in tuning. If you build your arrow for a 65# DW then you can adjust the DW up or down a pound or two to fine tune the bow and arrow for the best dynamic spine. All too often I see that guys have a 60 or 70 # bow and it is maxed out. It may be a little more efficient and quiet when maxed out but, with todays quiet bows and bow technology, a 70# bow that is set to 65#'s or a 60# bow that is set to 55# will be immensely quieter and more efficient than a bow of 5 yrs ago and those 5 yr old bows were quiet and efficient enough to kill a lot of deer.

Bruce I can tell you for a fact that my 71# (maxed out) Allegiance LOVED being shot at 66#'s;).

This is one of the first things I learned (the hard way) back when I bought my first compound bow. I shot fingers and sights with a 2216 arrow with a 125 gr broadhead. I started at a lower draw weight and progressively increased it. At 66 pounds, the bow/arrow combination shot fabulous. Not knowing any better I was determined to reach 70 pounds+. I finally reached 72 pounds and saw my groups starting to spread out (get worse). I thought it was just me, but no matter what I did, the groups never got back to the nice tight groups I had at 66 pounds. Finally I got smart and tried putting the weight back to 66 pounds and the tight groups came back. Now I tune all bows to my arrow.
