Did you just go PA on us for an example of deer rich country with enormous bucks? [:-]:D

I don't know if I could watch another TV hunt. But what would bring me back would be more public land hunting showing
a. extensive scouting what they are looking for and why
b. stand placement and why that particular tree and not another one
c. hunting in my area no some state where deer are all enormous and plentiful come to Mass and really show me something. No Pa,Il, Ohio and other deer rich country.
d. The hunt (least important)
e. The after the shot work and what happens when everything don't go perfect.

If the TV and Vids would be real like this I would probably start watching again, Even if it was in parts Part 1 scouting next week prt 2 stand placement etc.
X2...More how too's and Why's....I really like the Idea of bow tuning tips ect... you know...The REAL stuff we do as hunters to get ready for an afternoon hunt. I don't think it can be TOO SIMPLE as we all would like to refresh our memories and/or learn something....

I never liked it when they put a great shot on a buck and even after watching video of it, they decide to wait until morning! [:@]

Show me your tracking skills (right away on a good hit).

Let me see you tag it immediatly.

Let me see you drag that bad boy all the way back to the truck one-handed, not just a few feet then cut the film.;)

RE: About A Hunting Video..

I want someone to do videos where they hunt public ground or go knocking on some doors gaining permission. No fences, leases, bait plots and that sort of stuff. I'd love a show where they show you can still go hunting all for the price of the tag, it is possible!
I want to learn something, show the scouting, glassing, shed hunting, stand and blind preperation oh andlots of deer footage stuff.
No fakey reactions and emotionsafter the shots.
No fake track jobs

More young folks, teenagers and young folks in thier 20s.Maybe some footage of dad or uncle taking the kids hunting on some state land or a relatives place. No professional hunter or guide holding thier hand and telling them witch buck they can and can not shoot.
I don't like watching a 6 year old shooting bucks from an elevated trailer house at deer eating from a feeder with a rifle either.
Just some more realistic stuff for the common man. Not the wealthy guy wheremoneys no object types.
And whats with this hunting the world southern style , rap music and hunting don't mix. And what is "southern style"??
No PSE pro staff garbage and you know who you are. Long unethical shots, shooting at dall sheep hundreds of yards away just to say you shot at one.. WTH??
No David Morris granting his wife permission to shoot one of his big cattle like raised bucks, did you see that episode! Talk about pathetic! I'd have love to have seen David Blanton drive into the ranch that night with Morris's "shooter" buck in the back of his truck, that would have been classic stuff!
It's called hunting, not deer farming or ranching. Bring the wild and the sport back to hunting, you don't have to have lots of money to be able to have a great hunt. I loved the Wensel videos and other old school stuff as well.

And they should have a ratings sytem that should be displayed before the hunt, like.
F -Fenced in
G-Guided
P-public lands
That way I wouldn't find myself waisting my time watching some self proclaimed "pro hunter" sitting in a fenced in area waiting for the genetic freak to come in for a bite to eat.

Glad I wouldn't have to do that. There have been times where my drags would take up the whole video![8D]

I wouldn't mind a few shots showing the hunter placing his steps or climbing sticks along with hanging the stand or climbing in his climber........be kind of cool to see someone else doing it and why they chose that spot.

Show some reverence to the animal that just died. When t.v guys fist pump and start sinckering like little school girls it makes me want to drive my fist through their face.
I hear ya, Chris. That animal just paid the ultimate price for our pursuits. Show some respect.....reverence.

RE: About A Hunting Video..

I think I would echo much of what has been said here before: Not real impressed with hunting behind a fence, HATE the staged "drawing the bow" scene, I get tired of watching guys just sit on the edge of a green field (although I understand it, much easier to get good footage), and I also think it would be cool to see different styles of hunting...instead of just sitting on a green field show guys doing deer drives, or hunting with hounds or tracking (this might not be possible due to the difficulties of filming but its a thought). That being said I think the company that consistantly does it the best is Primos, lots of over the shoulder shots, lots of emotion, guys that seem like fun, and there are always a couple hunts involving kids.

RE: About A Hunting Video..

I want to know why you put your stand in THAT tree. I want to know EVERY reason behind your decision. If thats wher ethe outfitter told you to set up.....say so. If you're there because you've seen a buck exiting in that vicinity a few days prior....or even last season during this time......tell me. If it's got a good tree in front of it that you might use for cover to draw.....tell me. If it's simply 30 yds away from where you last encountered him....and you wanted to mix things up......tell me. If you can orient yourself to keep the sun ou of your eyes in that tree in that time of day.......tell me. If it's a great wind for that tree.....tell me.

These are things WE ALL think about every time we hunt. I don't think the guys we see on TV DO.

Why are you shooting your setup on your bow? Why that bow? Arrow? BH? If it isn't for $$.....why?

How do you practice?

So many things they never tell us.........so many.......

Mike I would like to see Someone let's say that owns 130 acres of land and see maybe a 1/2 hour segment on how he hunts it. From start to finish. Start out with shed hunting, then move to the planting of the food plots, then hanging the stands in August, then opening day until the end of the season. With maybe 4 to 6 people hunting the land. Just my thought.

Know anybody like that. (hint hint):D

If you want to know how to make a good hunting video watch the fishing shows. They tell you what they use for bait and why. Also depth to fish, water temp., water characteristics, structure, weatheraffects. etc. These are the things I would like to see.

I hate when they video a draw or a push off of the saftey after the shot just toadd dramatic effect!!! Please!!! Give Me A Break!!!
Show me the draw from behind the hunter with the deer in frame!!!

And I also hate the fake traking jobs were they put the camera behind the deer looking through the antlersback at the hunter and the hunter says " Oh there he is!!" like he is surprised to find the deer!

I mean Come on!!! [:'(]
I've filmed deeer hunts the last two years, and to do this is pretty hard. It has way more to do with the deer than hunter and cameraman. The deer seldom read the script.

Jeff, you hit the nail on the head all the way. Great info that should be incorporated into any good hunting video.

I personally want to see the hunter(s) from wake-up to the woods and then getting their crap together and getting into the woods and to their stand. This takes away from the reality when you skip over these things. I want to see if you screw up. (AKA Todd P. with his swirling winds last year. haha) If you are eatingor drinking or talking while on stand, I want to know when you do it. ie., When deer are not being seen, when they are too far to see you, when you think you won't get busted, ect. If you are having success with a call or scent, I want to see real life footage of it taking place. Not a bunch of cutaways when you call and then an hour later a deer shows up and you say you called him in. BS Just an advertisement. I am with GregH on the drag out too. Hey, if you are a hunter, I wanna see you sweat and bleed like we really do. Man, I have been waiting for a post like this. I will definately add more later.

Scouting, Scouting, Scouting. I want to see scouting from start to finish. Not just a few flashes of rubs and scrapes and then a hunt. I want to see you figuring out the wind and the cover and the sign and what stand and entry and exit routes and what time of day you hunt it.

LT

No doubt they are very cool, and every video strives to have them. One of the best I have ever seen is when Pat Reeve shoots a monster in Buffalo County (Moses is the deer), and in that footage, you see the cam roll over in the top portion of the screen, and the arrow through the whole flight, pretty awesome.

rybohunter 02-12-2008 03:59 PM

RE: About A Hunting Video..

I want to see hunting done how it is in real life. I don't care to watch 45 seconds of a deer standing perfectly open for a long time before the planets align and they decide to shoot. I don't want to watch a buck standing in a field for 20 minutes before shooting it.
I don't mind watching managed land or restricted access hunts, I just take them for what they are, but they can still be entertaining. Also TOO much behind the scenes stuff is boring for me. A little breaks it up, but too much is pointless. The married couples (both popular ones) are treading a fine line between too much goofiness & a balanced amount.

I didn't read all the posts on this subject because I came in in the middle, so if I repeat what others wrote, I apologize.
I would like to see a show thats not a running advertisement for brands x,y, and z.
I would like to see a show that explains everything they did as far as set up, and why they did it.
I want to see a show that has a hard core average Joe hunter(like me) hunting his own property or public land(not a super ranch). Reality not fantasy.
Although that might not be so exciting, it would be a nice dose of real life hunting that I know and love.

loogout1 02-12-2008 06:11 PM

RE: About A Hunting Video..

Oh, and when the hunter of the day makes a bad shot, how about some regret and remorse, instead of elation and fist pumping. The age of slo-mo, tivo, and freeze frame is here. A little humility is in order sometimes.

HNI_Christine 02-12-2008 06:22 PM

RE: About A Hunting Video..

It took me a looong time to drag my buck to the truck. It would be a pretty boring video. (tho' it may be entertaining to watch me jump up and down on one end of the deer cart trying to get the buck off the ground... and then the part where the buck and cart flipped on to it's side was pretty frickin' hilarious [:@])

Personally, I don't want to see too much footage of looking at maps and explaination of why the stands are hung where they are. I figure you put them where you think the deer are going to be and where the wind is good. ;) Put that boring stuff in the bonus features.

I do like to see slow mo' of the shot, I guess the outdoor channel doesn't allow it but a dvd could have it. I also like to see, on the dead deer, where the entrance and exit was and tell us how far the thing went. I hate the covers all 'I made a good hit on him' even when it clearly wasn't. I hate the fake blood trailing. (just look for your cameraman, he's standing right next to the deer.)

Another peeve.. when the shooter won't touch the animal he/she just killed or the zoom in showsjust the hunter and the deer's rack. Just showing a rack being man handled and shaken (that sounds funny) seems more disrespectful than any fist pumping after the shot. It's a whole deer you just killed, not just some bone.

I do like a bit of a story. If you've planned this trip for months.. do show very, very brief clips of the planning, packing, changing a flat tire in the rain on the way there (this seems to happen on my trips). Show Justin singing along with Bryan Adams during the drive. (hahaha)

I think you and J shooting your first 40+lb bighead carp would make for some interesting footage as well. ;):D

I didn't read this whole post... So if this has been said I appoligize.
When I started hunting and watching hunting shows I wanted to learn from them. Some of the first videos I watched weren't to bad but they push products more than teaching a hunter how to hunt. Mostly its "Use this product and you'll kill bucks like this" ... I understand that you have to have sponsors but teach us something... Not just push a new product.

I like

Over the shoulder kill shots.
Get in the woods, away from the food plots.
Tell us why you chose that spot.
Show it to us on aerial photos and maps.
Show us the deer before you shoot it, lots of footage.
Impact shots.
I wanna see the animal fall over.
Show us the ones that don't commit suicide too.

I don't like:

All of the HOLLYWOOD EDITING. MY pet peeeeeeeeeeve!![:'(](Drury's)
Sitting on top of food plots and feeders.
10 year old kids haveing to wait for that "management buck" and passing up 100 deer waiting for him.
Doing a calling sequence with the sun in your eyes, and the deer responding in 2 seconds with the sun to your back.
10 second hunts and a buck on the ground.
Using the latest useless scents and calls.
