All my whitetails have been within 30 yards. Shot an elk once at 42Yds.

80+ yards? I am sure I will be accused of being ethics police again and all of that, but I have to respectfully disagree with the statement that these type shots are not risky.

First, it will take most hunting arrows almost a full second to get there. An animal can do a lot of moving in that time.

Second, KE is greatly reduced and questionable at those distances as well as the effect wind and mis-estimating the distance has on the drop at those distances make them RISKY shots.

You nor anyone else has to answer toanyone but yourself when it comes to your shot selections, but please, don't try to justify that distance of a shot as being responsible.

In the4 years ive been bow hunting my furthest kill would have to be 10yrds from a treestand, and the shortest being 3yrds from a treestand[8D]

jackflap, while everyone can not nor should notattempt a shot at 80+ yards it is not that difficult on something as Big as an Elk. You have to know your equipment, the Game, and your abilities. I got a complete pass through on that Elk by the way as I did the Whitetail. Game that is not alert is very unlikely to make any sudden moves when the bow shot is 40 yards or more. If I told youthe story behind the 50 yard deer you wouldn't believe it. He was a dandy! I stress these shots aren't for everyone and I have imposed an approx 50 yard limit on myself anymore mostly due to my eye sight.

OK I'm done the Ethics police can Arrest me[8D]I won't be alone Chuck Adams and Bob Foulkrod can keep me company;)

Why do you call yourself a rookie because of this? Thats BS! To me its called RESPECT!! Your flrting with danger the farther you get out there. Again Twildasin, its called respect of what your doing, not being a rookie! Kudo's to you! I've shot allot of animals and not one has been any farther then 25 yards. My longest shot is 25 yards with a recurve, to me that was pushing it shooting Traditional. Maybe I shouldn't of shot, I probably wouldn't do it again. 95% of my shots and kills are at 15 yards.

Range Finders....Range Finders....and knowing your equipment....thats how the far shots are made with confidence....Range Finders! I couldn't make a lethal kill out past 25 yards with out a range finder....thats just me...the amount of error could result in a 3 inch high or low shot and a wounded deer...

Amen. If I would have just put that dad blamed rangefinder around my neck, I would have filled by antelope tag last September.

Amen Brother...and don't be shy guys...You can flop them around during the heat of the hunt...you just have to get use to them....like anything else...don't be scared....keep it close to your chest....

I have carried mine so long it is as big a part of my gear as my release. Believe me I keep it close!!
