"For too long, we have mismanaged whitetail herds to maximize "hunter opportunity."

What other reason would we manage them for?
Possibly overall herd health???
Avoid over population

To have less mv/deer collisions

To avoid the spread of disease

To have less crop damage..........................

Was the herd(in general)healthier when the deer numbers were around 500,000 and lots of habitat, or at 5,000,000 and less habitat? How do we know for sure? Did they do the type of studies back then that they do know? other than common sense, how do we know?

Have you ever read anything from Dr. Kroll? Do you know of him? His history?

I think Kroll would have everyone do it like the Texas fenced in joints do. Most of his recent books have been on "Growing and Harvesting Big Bucks", Food plot production etc etc. Not all bad, but if he has everyone fencing and controlling the deer then everyone will end up behind walls. Well everyone with 10 or 20 thousand dollars to spend on a deer hunt. The minute people start talking about "Managing the herd" I see hunting going further from it's roots and further from the hunting I love. I know.... it's me, but I like it like it is in nature, not the way it is inside a fence with food plots, breeder stock and managing. Bag limits and all are a necessity, but we need biologist setting them, not some politician.

I myself am wrong also in this, but we have not been part of nature for a long time and neither have most of the herds. Kroll has done a lot of his studied in UP of MI[8D]

Have you read this article?

I need to read it, but from what I suspect he may be leaning toward controlled hunting?

Nope, haven't seen it and don't have the magazine. When most start talking about "Managing" they're really talking about Big Horns and yes the dollars people will pay for them. Heck, they've started a whole new industry of seed growers and sellers.

I see none of those as concerns of a typical average hunter.

You might want to read it, it's a little different than you are assuming

Atlas correct, not a hunters Job. Kroll is addressing some issues we are going to have, he is addressing them to state game departments.

Let start with one issue

Decrease in Hunter numbers. MI is down 250,000 to 300,000
