Little things that really tick you off.
Post some "little things" that happen from time to time in bowhunting or during your preparation that really ... umm... "tick"... you off.
I'll start: So, I'm outside shooting my bow this summer, practicing with a $10 Montec head. Apparently, I didn't put enough glue on my insert, because when I pulled my arrow out of the block... *pop* The insert and head stayed inside. You dirty rotten.... So, now I've got thisspot in my block target that I can't shoot into - b/c there's abroadhead in there, waiting to eat my arrows. And I'm out of a $10 head. __________________________________________________ ________ Nothing makes me madder than climbing all the way up a tree, only to discover that either: A.) It has a bigass knot in it, and you can't get your climber up over it B.) The part of the tree that you want to sit in - is leaning the wrong stinkin' way, and your climber just doesn't want to cooperate - so you're stuck facing in a direction that you'd rather not be facing; or C.) You dropped your bow rope, and you get the pleasure of now going back down to retrieve it. |
RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
Getting to the range just to relize you forgot something important to be able to shoot, and sight in your bow[:@].
|
RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
The worst for me has to be climbing all the way up, doing your harness up and dropping your glove or something stupid like that. Specially when you slipped in as quietly as possible and you know have to make the racket of undoing your harness, climbing down, climbing back up and doing it up once again.

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
My uncanny inability to judge the initial angle of my climbing stand in relation to the taper of the tree.......[:@]

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
I had just gotten up in my climber one afternoon this year and went to pull my bow up and my quiver popped off. The Alpine Soft-Loc went on ebay the next day ;)

When I am all jacked and focused, just KNOWING a buck is coming by in the next few minutes ... then some idiot who doesn't have permission to hunt the land I'm on walks by LOUDLY!!!!![:@][:@]

I seem to have the Same issue MAtt - really sucks early season when it is warm
Hate the feeling in the early season that something isn't quite right - even though you prepared everything- only to get in the tree and feel inexperienced or that you forgotten something |

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
My daypack has a drink holder on it, on the left-hand side (when it's on your back). I like to hang my bow on the left, and my daypack onmy right. So, to get at my water, I'm stuck reaching around the tree like a monkey just to get it - because it's *conveniently* positioned on the opposite side of the pack. ...and you can't turn it around, just based on the design.
So then, I just kinda sit there and brood over it - thinking "why can't they make a damn daypack with the drink pocket on the opposite side?" "I'm thirsty, but I really don't feel like standing up and reaching around there fishing for this stupid water bottle. Guess I'll just sit here and die of thirst." Little things... |
RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
Nothin' gets my goat more than to be set up in one of my favorite places with no wind and hear 4 wheelers coming. I know that unless they stay around they probably don't spook the deer all that bad but it still kills me.

Settling into your stand and minutes later the neighboring landowner's kids start riding ATV's on the property you are hunting.[:@]

[ul][*]I get nearly frantic when I am running late in the mornings[:@]. If I over sleep even a little bit and it's breaking daylight while I getting into my set-up, I get ticked off I automatically think the morning hunt is ruined.[*]Having to poop at 4:30 PM while on stand[:@][*]How I feel at 7:00 PM if I refused to give into the urge and hold it.[*]Gnats buzzing in my ears on warm days.[/ul]

Another favorite of mine is when you go into apreviously-scouted area -gonna pick a tree when you get there. So, youpick out a tree and climb it - only to realize that there is a much, much better tree only a few yards away. You stare at it. You so wish you had chosen the other tree. It just sits there, staring back - "Come climb me," it says.
The more you stare, the more attractive it becomes. It's majestic. Straight as a telephone pole. A double-trunker, with great cover. Oh baby."Come climb me." It's like you married the ugly sister. The hot one is right there, but you just can't have it, because you're stuck with this ugly duckling of a tree. Eventually, you quit worrying about your hunt, and become more worried about your next hunt - so you can climb this goddess of a tree and enjoy yourself thoroughly. |

Mine would be,climbing into your stand, straping yourself in only to have deer walking up the path and your bow is still on the ground attached to your tether(spl).....[:@].
Ive had problems with the new people on the north side latelydoing the rambo thing with thier guns(about 100-150yrds away)right around 4-6 at night..they are in a field and Iam in heavy woods so they dont know Iam there and there are house's to the south so they dont shoot in my direction Thank God... |
RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
Any and every strap, belt, harness, string, cord or anything else that can catch, get tangled, come loose, twist, or snag. [:@]
this includes but is not limited to-Bino harness, safety harness, foot straps on climber, and the strap that holds the top & bottom together. [:@] In a related note, forgetting the strap that holds your hang on to the tree also can be quite frustrating. Especially when you are 2 hours from home, have as hot a scrape as you've ever seen, and the only ability to hunt it effectively would be from a perfectly selected tree 18 yds away.[:@] And getting an itch in an inappropriate places when you have 3 layers of clothes & gloves & a safety harness that gets in the way. [:@] Those are the little things I can think of now. I have plenty more to complain about, but those I would consider "large" complaints. |

My gift to pick the stand to hunt a buck can be seen from, but not shot. While they other stand I did not pick he poses in front of.
A buckI do not want to shoot sits in front me forever, I get dozen of shots. The one I want to shoot comes in I have 4.5 seconds to shoot the damn thing, and I have to pull of the shot of my life[:@] |
RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
when i climb up perfectly and quietly but all of a sudden i feel a rumblin in the belly and i have to franticly un do the harness and strip down to my boxers in 10 deg weather and "scent" the whole place up...terrible way to end a hunt in the morning.

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
when im walking in in the dark, and the pull up cord comes unwound off my climber bow holder, and imitates a coyote stalking me from 25 yards behind me [:@]
whem my yellow lab trailes me from 4 miles away and finds me when im walking out in the dark, and makes me think its a Raptor attacking me [:@] When i bump the bottom of my climber sending it 25' tothe ground, leaving me stranded in the top section with my legs dangling, because i failed to tie the two sections together [:@] when someone else sets a stand 50 yards from mine because they did not look around and see if any one was already set up there [:@] |
RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
Another favorite of mine is when you position your stand facing in a particular direction - expecting all the action to be in that designated area (let's say North). You've got your bow hung up, your pack hung up. Your safety belts are cinched tight.
So, at 7:30, you see a deer to the SW. Hmm.. You start paying more attention to that area. At 9:00, 2 deer pass, again to the SW. Now, you're really starting to wonder... Should you swing the stand around to the other side - and just face down that way? Nah. At this point, despite telling yourself that facing to the North is the right thing to do, you're staring exclusively to the SW, with your neck craned around the tree like a flamingo. Youabsolutely refuse to swing your platform around the tree. Neck begins to hurt. Hours pass. You still set there, stand facing north, butyour head wrapped around the treetrunk, staring to the southwest like a circus freak. You feel like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but you still refuse to move the platform. At this point, you're just trying to show the world that you can make it until climbdown time without caving in to the pressure of turning your treestand. You will not concede defeat. 11:30 - another deer passes. Again, to the SW. What now? You were gonna climb down, but you might just want to wait it out until dark. Your neck feels like somebody hit it with a ballbat. Headache starts. Finally, at 1:00 - you swing your stand and face SW. It took a grand total of 3 minutes. You are now comfortable, but you still can't turn your head to the right, because your neckmuscles arein permanent spasm. |

Above all else.........SWIRLING WINDS! It just seems we can not get a good steady wind down here anymore!

How about that dry, scratchy feeling in the back of your throat causing that pesky cough that will just NOT go away.....[:@]

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
Yep, mosquitoes, and not just any mosquito, that one son of a #%$&* that does nothing but buzz in your ear and you cant ever swather, she doesnt care about mosquito spray, shes from the devil himself, then eventually she gets under your face mask and into your ear, buzzing to no end, buzz buzz buzz right in your ear, making you feell like slapping the side of you head until you cant hear him any more, then finally you do, your beat the p!ss outta yourself right there in that tree tree to finally end the misery.
Other than that I'm pretty calm about little things. |

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
I HATE walking through the woods at dark:30 in the morning and walking into a spider web. You know the one, it wraps itself all the way around your entire face. After you get it wiped off you swear you feel the spider crawling on you until about an hour after daylight.

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
you climb 25 feet up in the tree get everything set up climber strapped in just turn and grap the bow cord to pull it up and yet some how throught climbing and everything. Your bow cord was never clipped on the stand and when you went to grap it you notice this but for some reason instead of being careful uyou spasm and nock it down 25 feet to the ground. I also have to agree about the squirrel thing many of squirrels have been killed from my bow becuase of that very thing make themselves sound like a deer. Or a squirrel get all of 3 feet from you face stare at you and then bark for whats seems like an hour right at you.

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
It's the little things that irk me, too.
1. I take my time and go in early.....stealthy as I can. Then thos GOSH DARN metal hooks on my summit climber seat hit EVERYTHING metal they could hit.....while I'm trying to get my stand unpacked. They need to figure out a better mouse trap. 2. When my bowhook acts like it is afraid of the wood on the inside of the tree....and spins on the outside without grabbing. Many a wasted effort of getting to the tree and up without sweating has been lost to this phenomenon. 3. Getting to the height you want to hunt from in your climber.....getting fuly dressed with about 5 layers.....and THEN relaizing your binos and strapare over layer 1.[:@] 4. Forgetting my facemask or gloves. 5. Leaving something at the foot of the tree (although these times have proven QUITE fruitful).;) 6. How do all those damned knots get into my haul line??????????????????????? 7. Forgetting I have my wrist strap release on.....and realizing it right after it hits the cold metal of my stand. 8. squirrels. 'nuff said. I'm sure I'll think of more. After over 100 climbs....I've pretty much got a good system figured out with my gear. What used to be a PITA....has been addressed and a new system found. BUT....these still get my goat. |

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!
This is why I've gone mostly to still hunting. There are just so many details, and so much equipment and so much clothing associated with tree standing, it takes much of the enjoyment out of it. Not to mention that you have to allow an extra hour to deal with the setup. I used to tree stand all the time and my biggest peeve was having to poop, either the second I get to my tree, or worse yet after I get up. I feel that for most hunters, if they would devote as much time, energy, preparation to still hunting as they do to tree standing, they would enjoy it more and have equal success.

What ticks me off the worse, when the wind slows to a very slight breeze, then begins to swirl. Or when the wind didnt listen to the weather man and causes me to change tacktics on the spot.

Not to mention that you have to allow an extra hour to deal with the setup. I could set up a ladder and a lock on in <30 minutes!:) |

When my bowhook acts like it is afraid of the wood on the inside of the tree....and spins on the outside without grabbing. Many a wasted effort of getting to the tree and up without sweating has been lost to this phenomenon. I love it when it justbores a hole into the tree - pulling out all kinds of bark and wood with every turn - but never actually biting into the tree and screwing in.Sure, they look all cute and green andfun and festive in their fancy schmancy little plasticpackaging....butin reality they'relittle green agents of Lucifer - hell bent on testing your meddle before your butt ever touches the seat. Then, you're stuck sitting in the tree with that hateful little green demon all day, while it sits there mocking you. Almost as if it's saying "go ahead, Nancyboy, say somethin'. Test me. See if I won't throw this bow of yours right down to the ground and smash it into a million pieces." ![]() |
