I HATE walking through the woods at dark:30 in the morning and walking into a spider web. You know the one, it wraps itself all the way around your entire face. After you get it wiped off you swear you feel the spider crawling on you until about an hour after daylight.
Someone put a thread out there about this ..... I didn't sleep for a week [:o]

And we can't forget that twig. Yeah....a twig. In and of itself...not a presence we'd be full of hate for. But on the back side of the tree you'r ein on a cold, dark morning......it's the death bough.

"But my climber cables should just slither past that little twig"

Yeah, right. You've got a better chance of levitating to your perch than that happening.

At first you can't figure it out. "Why won't it go"? "What could be the holdup, here?" "The tree had no branches."

What you don't realize is......the base of a 1/4" twig on the side of a tree that is attempting to be climbed by a hunter is the second strongest thing known to man.

No. 1 is that plastic packaging that encases your new sight.:)

Lot's of good ones.A couple for me would be thetangled bow rope on limbs beneath me that require me to go untangle it.The limb that I wish I would have cut back but didn't and now I am convinced that it will cost me a shot. The deer you can hear but can't see.The doe that you didn't see that blows at you while you are drawing on a great buck and he comes unglued. The coyote that disrupts the buck that is working his way toward you.The weekenders who decide it is a great idea to take their dog for a walk on the mountain during bow season and then get upset with you when you scare the crap out of them.My all time favorite,a couple is working their way toward me with their black lab already having come through,me wondering if I should whistle or say any thing, not wanting to startle them, not wanting really to have a conversation with them, finally upon me gently saying hello and startling them, they ask me is it hunting season? No I always dress in full camoflage and climb a tree with a bow just because!
There are many others I am sure!

Thsi happend to me this past weekend on a Muzzleloader hunt. I was climbing my tree and it was pitch black. Well I looked up with myheadlight and it slipped off the top of my head, hit my platform and then hit the ground. It wasnt to bad except for the light shining back at me from the ground. Well being the genius that I am (not), I tie a forked stick to my pull up rope and lowered it and hooked my light and pulled it up and turned it off. I thought it was a pretty neat trick so I lowered my light and tried again.

You're walking quite peacefully to your stand, in utter darkness, feeling quite positive about the day that is to unfold. You've got the scene playing in your mind, and a smile breaks out....

BAM!

you're suddenly on the ground because that god forsaken morning glory vine has, in an instant, become alive and wrapped itself around your ankle no less than 573 times and you're flat on your face, in the dirt and leaves.....

This happens to me once a year, and nothing pisses me off worse: I'm wearing my Codet wool bib overalls, take a leak, put it back in and zip up, and a tablespoon goes down my leg. I always forget that it's a "two hands" operation, you have to pull down on the fly opening to get complete drainage. I'll tell ya, this sucks worse than dropping something out of your tree!

During cold weather hunting I wear a fleece hood/mask over my ball cap. Well the velcro from the back of the hat (adjustmentstrap)sticks to the fleece on the hood/mask and proceeds to drive me nuts the whole time I'm hunting.[:@]

RE: Little things that really TICK you OFF!

The logging crew that decides to throw 2 full grown pine trees across the only ATV trail to access "your" property. It's 6:00 AM and 32 degrees and you have all your gear only find that you can not get to your own property. Upon inspection of the only other alternative route you find it too has full grown logs across it as well. You decide with reckless abandon you "will" hunt this day regardless. You attempt to go thru the woods around the log's treetops thru the surrounding woods. In order to do this you must perform motocross type skills over unexplored terrain and saplings in the dark with little to no hesitation. In the process ofriding down one of said saplings,ATV suddenly develops the mind of a PBR champion behemoth and comes down in a twisting, bucking motion and slams the upper cam of your$1000 bow into a full grown pine.(Much swearing and wishing for logging crew's demise follows)After succeeding in getting around said trees, you find that there are 3 more huge treetops crossing your trail. Again, with a bowhunter's resolve, you literally jump said tree-tops in sheer determination to make it to you stand before daylight. Upon unloading your climber from the ATV you look for your $100 rechargeable Mag-Lite only to find it is probably under the tree-tops-from-hell that will soon be skidded to the nearest delimbing station that is running at full force throughout the morning in your hunting utopia background. Said Light later found 6 inches from creek crossed in route to stand. This is not your typical morning but I just had to get this out. (Last Monday's hunt)

Oh, and I must not forget the nail head from a past permanent stand in the fork of 3 trees. After being the deer stalker extroadinaire getting set up in the darkness, you begin to climb. Notice this is only the beggining. Each time you lift the bottom portion of the climber it will not budge. You try to force it but to no avail. Finally in desperation you must turn on the headlight to penetrate the total darkness and see what this "thing" is that will not let you climb. Oh, just a rusty nail head. No problem. Until you find that even the best contortionist could not reach the cable of your climber to remove it from said nail. Why did I choose a climber for this mission? At this point I am not sure. After much struggling and hanging over the edge of the top portion of my climber with toes hooked under shooting rail, I manage to defeat the rusty nail of Satan. (Only to hunt all morning with no deer sightings) That's why I love this sport.

Another one that gets me is spending so much time to get to your tree as stealth as possible, just when you think youve succeeded without disturbing the woods at all, you go to screw in your bow hanger and creeeeeeeeeek, creeeeek, with ever passing turn until its in far enough to support your bow.I swear the sound echos around the woods for like 5 minutes after that and youve just realised that 15 minutes you spent walking in slowly was almost a complete waste.

Oh man, the list is endless. How about when a big group of does comes in so fast(on the run), that you dont have time to get ready. Then there are so many eyes around that you have to sit there and watch as they FEED AWAY from you and you get no shot ops. Or you have some deer coming in and you get ready, on the side of the tree that they have committed to pass by, only to have them hang up, feed, and go on the other side of the tree, only to be pinned down not being able to move. AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!

Or how about the mental struggle of something so stupid as wether or not you should put your fleece on now or later. Its 5am, you just got set up in your climber. You're a slight bit warm but not sweating, comfortable. Your pullover is jammed between the seat and the tree just mocking you. "You're hot now but as soon as that sun starts to come up you're gonna freeze like a little girl". You fight it, telling yourself its not gonna get that cold, all the while knowing deep down the fleece is right. Finally you've had enough, you're shivering like vibrator, you look around to make sure there are no deer in the area, and begin the process. Finally you have it on, defeated you sit back down only to see a couple of white fingers wagging at you in the distance. Am I the only one??

I feel that for most hunters, if they would devote as much time, energy, preparation to still hunting as they do to tree standing, they would enjoy it more and have equal success.
You don't stand a snowballs chance in hell of killing a deer via still hunting where I hunt. I guaranteeit. What ticks me is when people are walking around when they should be settled in their stands.[:@]So much for public land.;)

RE: Little things that really tick you off.

I hate it when you sneak into your elk stand (over a superb wallow), after climbing 1000-1500 ft or so, you climb the tree, get in the stand, change your wet shirt out for a dry one, settle in, look around, take a few ranges (as if you can't remember the last 100 times you did it), then draw your bow without an arrow in it to tune your muscle memory and make sure there are no cricks or screaks in the "outfit," and then!!! you dry fire the bow and it leaps out of your hand and drops 22 ft to the ground. UHhh...

Anyway, you have to get down, and "oh my god" the bow still is intact except for the sight shroud! You shoot one field point to see if it is on at 30, and get back up.

The best thing about that evening was that I could have killed any one of four cow elk under me, but I chose to pass for the bull I killed 10 days later.

I have to say this might not be the biggest blunder I have made in 27 seasons of bow hunting, but it is sure the most recent - 07 baby!!!

I can't stand it when you take all the preperation and time in a hunt get out early and thirty minutes later a shooter buck comes by and you make a deceant shot on him. So I wait a few hours to get out of the stand to go look for him and when you get to the end of the blood trail and there is a big pool of blood and nothing else, like some one walked off with my deer. Thats why i dont have a pic of my buck that I took this year, because it is hanging in someone else's garage. Thanks for letting me rant.

Tucking that release neatly back into the glove only to have it work loose at the last step up and go CLANK!

People who let their dogs wander through the woods whether it's hunting season or not

Tangled haul ropes, dropped haul ropes, too short haul ropes, knotted haul ropes. Oh heck, ALL haul ropes!

Those bow hooks and pack hooks that wont start into the tree without making you work yourself into a sweat while almost falling out of the tree to get leverage enough to make the $@&!%!$ start!

That hand warmer, extra shirt, granola bar, rangefinder, water bottle, cal or whateverthat realizes just before you do that your going to need it and promptlymigrates to the bottom of your pack and then dodges and ducks your groping hand that is twisted around behindyour back just to get into the pack!

The mosquito that just has to land inside your ear every 10 seconds and her sister who finds your eyes anddoes the same.

Hunting early season (Oct) in Louisiana. To the stand before first light. All is going well. Thermacell on, mosquitoes gone. Beautiful morning. 9:30AM movement on the ground 5yds from stand. Can not see what it is. Is it a rat? Nooo. Is it a huge bug? Noooo. Finally you take binos out of pack to get a close-up view. Ahhh yesss. The infamous Mr. Copperhead, wiggling thru the leaves with some sort of prey in his mouth. Nice. Now you try and keep track of him for the next 1.5 hrs. All is well. He stays 5 to 10 yds from your tree. 10:30AM rolls around. Time to go. Uh, Oh. Where is the snake. You search with both binos and the naked eye and no snake. Now you have to get out of the tree and make your way back to the ATV. Hoping you don't run into the little friend who demands it, with little to no hesitation. Sort of reminds me of the infamous Mudbone (aka, Richard Pryor) line when Mrs. Rudolph says, "Oh don't you worry. If you don't bring my Christmas turkey, you will see that spider again."
