I like mornings. I have a lot of luck in the morning as well. Also when you kill a deer in the morning there is plenty of time to recover it and process it. The other thing is all the people walking, helicopters flying, dogs being walked, golfers playing golf, construction workers pounding on new houses, bulldozers in new subdivisions have all not started yet. Evenings are nice too but tracking in the dark is not as enjoyable to me. I'll take a morning hunt on a nice day over a night hunt usually.
good lord man! . . whatneighborhood are you huntin' in?? lol. . go out into the woods!

This came up on a thread a couple of months ago to which I replied all of my deer save onehave been killed between 1pm and 3 pm which obviously make afternoons my favorite time. ThisyearI saw more shooter bucks between dawn and 8am.I guess I might have to change my opinion.

definately mornings...more fun to me to watch everything light up when day breaks and I've shot most of my trophys in the mornings also.

I like both!!!! I'll hunt the afternoon/evening's early season because this is when I try to have them patterned, when and what fields there coming into. I can also take my time and not get to sweated up. after a few weeks into the season I'll move back into the woods and start doing the morning hunts as well. During the Rut I try to be in the woods as much as possible from sunup to sundown!!! The late season depends on the weather what time I hunt. When it in the single digit temps I'll be in the woods the warmest part of the day until close!!!

If I had to choose one over the other, I would gravitate towards the evenings, especially if your after an older buck.

From August 30th to about October 25, here anyway, from what I have witnessed over the years the old bucks that I have hunted have moved a little more in daylight hours close to their core bedding areas in the evenings than they do in the am hours. In the AM, they are hard to cut off going back into their hangouts before daylight. I have bumped more big bucks in the mornings trying to cut them off as themove into their safe zones...way morethan in the evening by far.

Our OctoberLull in Northern Idahois a little later than the mid west and easts... From about Oct 25 to about November 5th, I see very little big buck movement. I see tons of young buck movement during this time..the big boys almost like clock work yearly lock down over this week to two week time table.

Then by about November 10th, the big boys start moving a bit to work doe family groups scrape lines... but still its mostly all after dark by the old bucks...in early to mid Nov here. During this time I like mornings as well as evenings, because I have caught the big boys getting back to their core areas after daylight...

From about November 17-18 on ... its all day hunting and I see more mature daylight buck movement even later from Thanksgiving until Dec 1 ...lots of mid day movement in that last week of Nov....which is in our anyweapons season.. so even with guns firing all over.. I still see more big bucks moving during this time.. But the big boysare always in the cover...rarely do I see a big mature buck just standing out in the open.. not even during the rut..

Back to my late season hunting, I like the post rut late evening hunts. By mid Dec, when my archery season opens back up, bucks start to focus back on feed and will still be located in core areas close to doe family groups, still checking on the odd few young does that didnt get covered in mid to late Nov. I rarely hunt the mornings with any success in the late season. Bucks are mostly bedded and move as little as they have too. Here anyway... thats what I see in the big woods settings..because they have the best feed available right in their brushy tangles.. They litterally lay up in the cenothous and feed and sleep.. moving mostly only in the evenings to where the doe family groups are feeding during daylight hours..

the8 bucks I have killed with my bow that are 4.5's and older..( one 8-10 year old, 1- 7.5 year old, 2 in the 5-6 year olds and 4 in the 4.5 year old catagory)only two I've shot in the mornings.. but then again, I do hunt more evenings because of work..but over all.. thats when I find my best chance to catch a big boy say 50-100 yards from his daytimebedding area.
