RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
You have mature bucks but they dont carry the rack size. I dont judge a mature buck by his rack size but age.
So FL you no doubt have mature bucks but you just dont get the rack size. P&Y bucks are mature bucks its just that we have the environment here in the midwest for this rack size. So answering your question you will not get the P&Y racks but youcanhunt the same type of mature bucks. Regardless of where you are a mature buck is just that. |
RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
Yea but in some locations mature bucks just don't (or rarely) exist.

Here's some extra credit reading......
Atlasman said..... Location is THE #1 factor by a long shot. Nothing else even comes close. A belowaverage skilled hunter with a decent amount of free time to hunt in the heart of big buck country will drop more large bucks in a couple years then the best skilled hunter could ever do in a lifetime of hunting in places where big bucks are rare. The land you hunt (location) is without a doubt the #1 factor that will determine your success.........especially over a long period of time. Anyone can kill a mature buck on any given day in the woods..........even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile..........however, if they are not around in decent numbers you will have to work extremely hard or be extremely lucky to do it CONSISTENTLY. You can't kill what isn't there. What do you guys consider consistently anyways? Every year? Every other? I'm not saying you can't kill a big ol' buck in the heavily hunted battlefields of state forests...........I'm just saying that if that is your goal there are easier ways to accomplish it Why do you think people pay thousands of dollars to hunt Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Texas etc??? Because that is where you stand a pretty good chance of seeing and taking a big buck. Sure it can be done in your home county by a couple guys a year out of hundreds...............but in Pike county someone downing a big mature buck is old hat..........happens every year to many guys. Take an average hunter..........not Chuck Adams but not a clueless tard either. Put him in the heavily driven, over hunted, beat down public lands and he will win the lottery before taking a mature buck. Put that same hunter on a privately owned farm that gets minimal if any hunting pressure and has abundant food sources and good deer numbers and all he has to do is not miss. He will have a wall full of nice bucks. You can be a master at any of the other categories and still have an extreme uphill battle to consistently take mature bucks if they just aren't there..............or you can have a great location and great success with only average skills/knowledge of the other categories. Everyone here should ask themselves what they would be willing to pay for out of all the categories listed and that will give you your answer I doubt anyone is willing to pay very much for any of these 2. 10+ years of experience 3. Scent Control, including the wind 4. Knowledge of Hunting Area 5. Time spent scouting 6. Actual amount of time on stand Now how many guys are willing to pay for a chance to take their skill, knowledge, experience and patience and apply them to a honey hole---dream spot where big mature whitetails are seen regularly?? 1. Location, Location, Location location, location, location. You can't kill what isn't there. And the more you have running around, the "easier" it is to take one. also.... http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2245713&mpage=1 It isn't just me saying this. |
RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
As many have` already stated if we put some of youguys in big buck areas you would probably kill a big buck. But there are just as many posting here that couldn't kill a big buck if you blinded him, deafened him & fenced him in two acres of corn during the first week of the rut.
I'm actually surprised at how some of you manage to hit the earth while missing deer after deer.;) |
RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
I know a few guys who head down to pike and do not score.
What I am saying is that mature bucks are everywhere but when it comes to P&Y bucks (Were talking rack size here) they are not everywhere and that is why people come here for the racks. Yes P&Y bucks are mature deer but not every state has the numbers when it comes to these rack sizes. You do not here a person say I am going to IL for a mature buck you hear I am going for a big rack. FL does not compare to Pike County when it comes to rack size. With this being said I agree with those extra credit reads on most points. If there is not a Big buck (Rack Size) then you will not see one, makes sense. Now if there are mature deer but carry small racks they are just as difficult to hunt and location is the key. It sounds like we have 2 topics here P&Y bucks (Rack size) and Mature bucks non P&Y? |
RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
You guys kill me..I made it through about 7 pages..
Between GregH doing his usual chest thumping. GMMAT trying to explain why he feels incompetent (a self depravation that no one else brings on him as much as he does himself!) Your doing a fine JOB hunting..now just try enjoying it! and Fraley's incohereant jabs... I think we should all just line up in the shower and compare Schlong size. |
RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
Location is a key factor, no doubt.... But I think work ethic is right up there with it... For instance, I consider myself a pretty good hunter and I run into a good buck every few years, however I have a couple friends that are light years ahead of me in both ability and number of mature bucks killed..Why? B/C they work their butts off year round to consistently harvest mature deer. I MIGHT could do the same, but just don't have the desire to give my life to bowhunting mature bucks... Some guys do, nothing wrong with that....
You think guys like Shedd33 are hammering P&Y bucks EVERY year b/c of location? Heck no! Its that work ethic and absolute obsession with big bucks that produce the results. I applaud guys like GregH and Shed33 and many, many others that go beyond the call of duty to hunt these big ol' nasty mature bucks.. And I'm man enough to tip my hat to a better hunter... |
