RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
Deer hunting is like life. It is not always fair. I know a guy who shot a 240" monster in Kansas a few years back with his bow. It was his first buck with a bow. He lost friends over killing that deer! Many people made up stories about him taking it illegally. Guys would go into his work and give him crap. To me, the worst part about killing a deer that size early on is---what do you have to look forward to? He will never kill a deer more impressive than that.

ORIGINAL: Geronimo This post is so long I can't remember who posted it but just the idea that it was posted and all of the subsequent responses just reminds me how arrogant and self serving we hunters can be sometimes. I have always thought of hunting as a right of passage to stewardship of nature's bounty. So in keeping with that spirit, I congratulate and celebrate all of us that are blessed with this bounty regardless if it's a 12 year old hunting for the first time or an old man like me that's hunted for many years. At least I know ONE person can readAND canactually comprehend and understand human psyche. This thread was doomed from the start, why? Because too many people have forgotten what this (hunting) is all about and have turned it into some kinda big pissing match and chest beating extravaganza that I guarantee will be the end of this pastime as we know it. I saw this coming a mile away.....sadly many didn't.....or couldn't.[&o] |

RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
Never am jealous of a newbie getting a big buck. As long as he got it legally a congrats is in order.
In response to GregH, Rob and Jeff. Location, hunting pressure, terrain and the amount of time to huntall play into how hard an area is to hunt in being successfulshooting a maturebuck. Experience, persistanceand luck can't be over looked either. I'd keep my location butif I could stealJeff's hunting pressure, Rob's trees and GregH's time to hunt...life would be great!!!! [8D] :D I think Ijust described the golden horse shoe crammed up Hunsucker's arse!! ![]() Seriously each area has it's benefits and hardships.Saying GregH has it good just on account of location is not reallyfair. We have quite a few guys from Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa in the contest. We know these states are capable ofgrowing 170, 180, 190 and a few 200 class bucks. Where are their monsters this year ?? Alot of theseguys are very good hunters.Apparently it isn't just aboutLOCATION !! You've got to get them in bow range. Jeff shot a maturebuck. Who caresif it didn't have a rack on it comparableto most bucks inany of the four states mention above. It was a mature buck and a good one for his area. He had a history with it. What more could a guy ask for ??Why he needs to constantly throw location in everyone's face, I have no idea??[&:] Hell, I would have been happy tagging a mature buck this year and couldgive a rat's arse lessif it didn't compare to bucks in other areas. RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
ORIGINAL: FRALEY It would never happen.:) The diff is GregH. ORIGINAL: GMMAT Let's see how smart you are, Fraley. Let's say that Rob/PA; Matt/PA and Atlasmanwere hunting GregH's woods for their entire hunting lives......same access Greg has had. How many P&Y bucks do you think they'd have to their respective credits? Now.....what's the difference.....besides "location"? season GregH Friend 1 140 135 2132127 3 150antlerless (shed buck) 4 126 skunked 5 170115 We share stands, actually he uses mine when I'm not hunting them and I like mine better than his. Result: 7 out of 9 deer were taken from my stands. This guy is not a bad hunter and kills lots of deer but killing mature bucks is a whole different ball game. You see.... it's not about location, there's a lot more to it. Don't believe for one second that anyone can come to my location and kill mature bucks every season. |
RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
Well put and I couldnt agree more. I have 1 thus far to my credit but stay tuned.;)

RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
Saying GregH has it good just on account of location is not reallyfair. I've never made this "about" anyone, personally. But.....let's take a hypothetical big buck hunter from....."Iowa"....with 14 P&Y's under his belt in 16 yrs. How many do you think he'd have under his belt if he'd been hunting Florida. You guys can try to pit this and me against (________).....but I made a generic statement that.....really....if you use common sense....can't be argued. THE most important ingredient in being able to kill big bucks......is LOCATION. It's got NOTHING to do with anyone in particular. It's a FACT. The greatest hunter in the world can't kill something that isn't there. No...it doesn't hurtthat you're dedicated anda good hunter. I've never discounted that. Ever. it's just not THE most important factor. Failing to acknowledge location as the most important factor is a slap in the face to GREAT hunters all over the countrywho hunt where they're NOT. It's no slam on ANYONE. It's just a fact. |
RE: Your thoughts.. be honest..
Mature bucks maybe many as for rack size probably not to many.
You do have to hunt where the big boys are but thats only part of it otherwise I would have many more under my belt. My goal and only goal will to be consistant year in and year out on mature deer from now on. Make sense? As you know sometimes I am not good with words so I am working on it.:) |
