RE: why do you bow hunt?
I love the thrill and the challenge. It is a time of relaxation, but that can all change to adrenaline if you see a big buck. It is just amazing to me. Sitting in the woods, listening to nothing but the birds and the bees. Smelling what REAL fresh air (not the stuff that is bottled up and sold in stores). Seeing wild animals that don't know you are there. It is just the greatest feeling alive.
Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^) |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
At this time of my life I feel that it is
the only way for me to hunt dont enjoy gun hunting any more and feel that it is the most sporting and humane way to harvest game that there is.Buck Magnet said the rest very well, good luck good hunting!! |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I love the peice and quiet, the challenge of hunting deer on their own terms, with other hunters disturbing them, and having to get real close to make the shot. In my opinon bowhunting is real hunting, gun hunting( wich I still do) is more shooting. Nothing wrong at all with the gun, but I just don't get the same enjoyment.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
Well to be totally honest I started bowhunting because I got a felony when I was a kid and it has me hooked now. I will be able to own a gun again in a few more years but I am not sure if I will even mess with 'em(guns).

RE: why do you bow hunt?
I just love the peace and watching the sun rise and set.
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I bowhunt because it fulfills an ageless desire to hunt and kill game to feed the people. The bow has been in our ancestors hands for so long that it is as natural for me to loose an arrow and kill a deer as it is for the deer to die.
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
hmm where to start. I like shooting, meeting and other archerys/bowhunters (we definatly are a different breed!). I like the dawn-dusk and seeing the critters in the wild interacting with the world around them where ever that maybe. Getting close, sometimes to close. Learning more about game becuase of this closeness needed. Building arras and the silent but audible 'scream-hiss' of my arras as they fly down range. The flight of my arrow as it arcs across an open field. The challenges of staying simple but yet ever so complex in a day where fast pace and cash makes th world go round!
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
Because I must. Frosty mornings, the smell of fall leaves, bugger hanging from your nose, heart rush, twack, tasty treats. It keeps me coming back for more.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
I really like being out in the woods and hunting with my bow. Getting close to the animals and seeing how they interact with each other is exciting. Bowhunting is a lot more challenging than gun hunting and I actually enjoy shooting my bow more than a gun now. Plus the season is longer and you get to spend more time with nature.
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
(1) I see more deer than in gun season
(2) The deer are acting normal (3) I get to learn more about deer behavior (4) I get to test my hunting skills (5) There is few hunters in the woods (6) It gets me in the woods earlier (7) I get to see bucks I may not get to see later in the season I could go on and on as to why I bow hunt. |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
Because it provides a common interest that my brother and I can enjoy together. We are both adults now and we have never really had much in common and this is a way for us to get together and have fun. Family is family.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
I hunt so I can be in the woods with all of natures creations. I could not imagine my life without hunting. Just to be there to witness the seasons, the trees, the animals. When I was alot younger, the kill was more important than the rest. Now that I am older, that is only a small part of it. Just seeing wild game, undisturbed, it their natural environment is by far the biggest part of it all!
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
A true bowhunter is the ultimate human hunter (far exceeding our gun hunting counterparts) there is something about being so cloose to such wary animals that cant be found anywhere else. Not to mention the fact that as long as I have been hunting I have never heard a bowshot ring out through the woods, quiet means a lot to me........hill

RE: why do you bow hunt?
Quite time just me & mother nature.
More of a challange than gun. Hunting is nature. It is our nature to hunt. I'm not a hunting fanatic just a hunting addict. |

RE: why do you bow hunt?
I started out bow hunting to expand my hunting season.Once I got hooked I found out like most others I liked the challange, peace and quiet, deer undisturbed.I even got use to the frustration that goes with it.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
Why? Because I love being outdoors, I love observing the wildlife, bowhunting is something I do for relaxation, its a part of me, and part of my soul. Sometimes its hard. I go bowhunting under conditions that I normally would not do any other outdoor activity. Sometimes its harder than work.....I might walk a mile carrying 20 lbs. on my back and loose wet soil under my boots. I sit until darkness for hours waiting for a moment that may not come, waiting for even a glimpse of the beautiful animal that I am after. But its worth every drop of sweat on a warm day, every bit of damp coldness that may creep into my body, sitting still for hours and not always being comfortable. Its worth every second.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
The undescribable rush that comes when you're so close to game. The bow has always held my fascination, and I love seeing the world in its natural wonder.

The quiet...the calmness...the beauty of the woods...the individualness of the weapon...the feeling of being in all camo...20 feet up a tree...the sounds of the woods waking up in the morning...the feeling of confidence rippling through my body....
...that first crunch of the leaves as a deer comes down the hill....the smell.... ...come on October...come on..... |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
My first bowhunt in Alaska
I sit here in my special place. My mind wanders deeper into the woods that surround me. never have I heard the sound of leaves falling from the trees. The cool air seems to be killing the trees and I am sitting here watching them slowly die as the leaves struggle to stay on the tree. The golden yellow, and red leaves of the birch and aspen trees with splashes of green from the spruce that paint the hill side as I sit. silent, watching, waiting. Suddenly the wind would blow and rustle the leaves causing a few more to fall, blanketing the ground for the soon to come snow fall. Its already freezing at night so I know the snow is not far away, even the afternoons are chilly. The sun is just rising in the East with the first shafts of light intensifying the colors of fall. Everything seems to move in such unhurriedness that time stands still and nothing seems to change I know time is going by cause I can see my breath as I breathe slowly, calmly. The world Im in belongs to me no one will ever share this time in my special place. I know it will all change soon and the fight for survival will claim many of the lives of the forest animals. But what expense is there in so much as one may die so another can live. This is the cycle of life in the forest and we as humans are the top of the food chain... or are we? so many of the animals are bigger and stronger than us a bear could, given certain circumstances kill us with one swipe of its paw or one bite from its jaws. So many things come and go in my head my brain cant keep up. Its quiet here yet I can hear everything, the sound of one leaf falling as it hits each branch on its way down sounds like something walking but I know its just a leaf. Suddenly a twig snaps bringing me back to the present. My heart begins to race I can feel it trying to jump out of my chest and can hear the beating in my ears. Something scrapes a bush. where is it, what is it. My body is on full alert. There is no wind so I know what ever it is cant sent me. I haven't moved and the tree and bushes in front of me hide me quite well... There it is A MOOSE. He's not big but he's legal to shoot. He walks so slowly, cautiously looking every where for movement, ears twitching trying to hear any strange sound as he bends his head and feeds some 50 yds from me. He's moving just into range. Very quietly I remove one arrow from its place trying not to make any sound, as I set it on its rest and knock it onto the string. His head raises, sniffing the air, he looks all around and lowers his head continuing his feeding. The trail he's on would bring him in at 40 yds, I cant move, if I do now he will see me, so I wait. He feeds down the trail and at the moment his head is behind a tree im able to shift my weight. Wait he heard something. What was it? did I make some sound I didn't hear? Are there other moose following him? did a breeze carry my scent to him? So many questions go through my head. Now he's not moving, maybe he senses something's not right. Not finding anything wrong he goes back to feeding. Trying to control my breathing which I know is heavy, I glancing down with my eyes to see if everything is ready on my bow slowly I raise it. Wishing for a gentle breeze to move the trees so I wont be detected. He raises his head again looking away from me. "Perfect" i thought. going through everything in my mind... OK just like practice. I draw my bow back locking it into the same position I have thousands of times. breathe I have to breathe OK he's at 40 yds... Aim... second site pin is 35 so put it high on his back... perfect.. breathe damn it.. squeeze the trigger... don't forget to follow through, just like before..... thwap... the arrow leaves my bow and I watch every thing go into slow motion my arrow flies high clipping some hair but no skin. He looks back at me with ears pointed strait up and kinda snorts at me and trots off as if to say ha ha you missed. such is hunting I was grateful he wasn't wounded as I sat back down to think about all that went wrong... nothing, the only thing I failed to account for was the elevation. The downward shot caused the arrow to fly high. I would go over the shot many more times in my head reliving it over and over.. Next time.. there will always be a next time. this is why Ron |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I'll tell you why I started bow hunting. After I gained some skill gun hunting it became less than thrilling to whack a doe at 150 yards.I started scouting harder and looking into deeper darker areas of the woods to find bigger deer and more of them. Well my style of hunting changed . All of the sudden I found myself hunting deer trails and sign at very confined ranges in the thickets.I killed sevral bucks with the rifle at 5-20 yards.
One day it dawned on me what I really enjoyed was being able to get that close undetected, and heck since i was that close I should up the excitement and go to bowhunting. So I did and now my excitement is ten fold better than what I feel when I am rifle hunting. Just getting a draw on a deer beats shooting one with a rifle for me. Bowhunting has definately made me become a better hunter!I actually considered selling my rifle this year but them theres always that chance that I'll go somewhere exotic and want to take it. |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
THE CHALLENGE OF GETTING TO LESS THAN 20 YARDS. THE EXCITEMENT WHEN I DO, ESPECIALLY THE DANGER WHEN HUNTING BEARS. THE ENJOYMENT OF THE PHYSICAL RIGORS OF THE HUNT, SHEEP AND GOAT HUNTING AND PACKING OUT HEAVY LOADS OF MOOSE MEAT. THE MEMORIES AND SATISFACTION, WHETHER I MAKE A KILL OR NOT. ALSO THE ABILITY TO SHOOT MY BOW 12 MONTHS A YEAR AND NOT LOOSE ANY MORE HEARING. THE FUN OF DIPPING AND CREASTING ARROWS WITH MY UNIQUE DESIGN. AND THE OVERALL QUALITY OF PEOPLE I MEET IN THE SPORT.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
It's the thrill, the challenge, the rush and adrenaline, peace and quiet, and just getting away from everyday life and going to a place that is awesome. Bowhunting is great!

RE: why do you bow hunt?
I started rifle hunting in the late 60's w/a short attempt at bow hunting in my mid twenty's with a bear recurve. I would deer hunt for two weeks a year for the next twenty years. At age 40, my priorities changed and I wanted to extent my time in the woods. I picked up a Martin compound from a k-mart on a whim. That's all it took. I realized that bow season what I had been missing all those years. Well that was 12 years ago. I learned more about hunting and the game I hunted in 10 years of bow hunting then in the 20 years of rifle hunting. I don't know why but at 40 I became instantly addicted to archery/bow hunting. I now shoot 12 months year. Do all my own work with a mini archery shop in my basement. I still have a half dozen or so rifles and guns that I shoot occasionally at a local gun club but most of the time; I’m carrying a bow. Smokepole pretty much summed it up with his list. I never had a parent or relative who hunted so I’m not sure where I got this passion for hunting but I’m giving my kids the opportunity to follow me in this sport. I can tell ya it has been one of the best things we share as father & sons. To be with your kids in the woods at dawn and share the gift of nature in priceless. Compulsive obsessive would probably be how I would describe my bow hunting/archery today. JERRY |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I Love It. The piece and Quiet. The diffrent smells on diffrent days. The watching a bird land on a branch right in front of your face and he doesnt know your there. The sound of a bird flying right past your head and hearing how loud his wings sound. Watching a Squirrel playing right infront of you and not knowing you are there. The fact that you can be so at piece one second and as soon as you catch the glips of a deer your heart goes thru your throat. All of the practice buying bows choosing the accsesseries buying the arrows choosing the broadheads practicing all year long taking a million shots just to be sure when you get that one shot it will be on target. The fact that when you spot that monster buck you cant sleep for a week and all day everyday your thoughts are how you are going to get him. A million other great things that I forgot. The only way to realy explain it is bowhunting isnt something you do its a way of life.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
I like to hunt earlier in the season.I like the challenge of finding the deer and letting them get close enough for a shot.
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I started out bow hunting because the seasons were longer and I could work hunting in around work easier. I could also buy them over the counter and go anywhere as opposed to the rifle hunts here in Arizona that are done by lottery in a particuliar unit.
Now I rarely hunt with a rifle, except to go when my son is drawn. I guess now I just like being alone and enjoy the thrill of getting as close to game as possible. "Hunt smart, know your target and beyond" |
RE: why do you bow hunt?
To participate in the circle of life that I have learned to respect through watching and hunting with a bow. I believe that everyone needs a chance to unwind and everyone has a different method some hunt, some drink, some use dope, some use meditation and the martial arts, some drive, some fish. I just found hunting and the martial arts to be my escape from daily stress. I also hunt to spend quality time with my grandfather now 76 yrs old, my father, my friends, and my son.

RE: why do you bow hunt?
No fancy answer here: it's just what I am and what I know. Rifle hunting in Pa isn't much hunting, as it is stand and shoot em when they come by. Archery hunting is just everything.
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
the same reason i hunt other ways because i like to hunt. man AKBOWHUNTER you'r a poet
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I believe the reason i like bow hunting more than rifle is you have to get close to the game. There is something so exciting about hunting elk with a bow, and have them looking for you when you are using a call.
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I enjoy it cut and dried ,started shooting a bow when I was just a kid. Killed my first deer with a bow in wisconsin while I was in the military .Now I only elk hunt because none of my friends bowhunt for deer .
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I like the challenge and the thrill of taking a deer with my bow. I started in 1986 with a $100 PSE bow. I killed my 1st deer a 5 point buck that season and was hooked for life.
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I needed a new challenge from using a firearmand bowhunting was it .It was the fairest way to harvesting a deer and getting as close to deeras I could ,This year has been a real challenge and I now can look forward to turkey season WITH A BOW yes definetly another new challenge .Bowhunting doesn't make things easy but certainly it makes thing very interesting

RE: why do you bow hunt?
I hunt for the "sport" of it. Now, when I say "sport" I don't mean what Webster is defining it as. What I mean is, the sport of studing your prey, knowing what it's going to do. Taking a piece of land, scouting it, knowing what trails they use when and where they are going. Setting up stands amonth ahead of time, making sure everything is just right. Walking into the woods at 5 a.m., not making a sound, sitting in there all day. Waiting, during the peak of the rut. oderless, the only oders around are the ones that you want. Waiting for Mr. big to step out of the brush, perfect 20 yard broadside shot. And at that moment, when you release that arrow, you and that deer create a bond, a friendship, an understanding, that no one else can have. Sure, others can experience it but none will no that exact bond that you have made. Only then you will know the term "sport"
|
RE: why do you bow hunt?
I bowhunt because there are too many irresponsible people in the woods or driving the backroads during gun season...
I won't say any more. If I owned a large piece of property I 'might' go out during gun season, but would still bowhunt as I have the bug now. |
