Would you turn him in?
If you knew a friend was breaking game laws (i.e. too many bucks; notchecking in ALL deer; etc...).....would you turn him in?
|
RE: Would you turn him in?
Depending on how severe the violation is. I'd probably give him a good talking to the first time I found out about it if it was something like not checking in. If he kept doing it repeatedly or was poaching, then he's no friend of mine. Yes. I'd turn him in.

Arthur:
Good answer....and the poll keeps it anonymous. BUT....I concur with your answer....and I will act accordingly.;) |
RE: Would you turn him in?
Sorry Yes!!!! Walt
|
RE: Would you turn him in?
That is a toughy there but I kinda look at it like this. If you follow all the game laws you really expect your friends to follow them also. Maybe a good talking to with him would change his ways but if that doesn't work then you have to do what you have to do.
|
RE: Would you turn him in?
No. I would not hunt with him, nor would I entertain conversation about his hunting season, and I would definitely try and talk some sense into him, but I would not turn him in.
|
RE: Would you turn him in?
I had to answer no, because of a situation I am currently in. I have a friend who I've hunted with for 25 years. He is a close friend, and it would be impossible for me to turn him in.For unexplained reasons the last couple of years he has decided the game laws are for you guys, and not him. ( just little things). We have discussed this and he seems to blow it off.
Things came to a head this year when he killed a small buck and didn't tag it. I told him if he wants to do those things he can hunt without me in the future. We have a whole year to work things out; and hopefully we can, but turn him in.... NO WAY. The most I could ever do is no longer hunt with him. |
RE: Would you turn him in?
If a friend was breaking other laws would you turn him in? Say, if you knew a guy was stealing from stores and was not going to stop or if you knew he was drinking and driving and wouldn't stop? I think the answer goes beyond the breaking of game laws and speaks directly to knowing someone is breaking the law, any law, and either ignoring it or doing something about it.
Arthur's answer pretty much sums it up. Try and reason with him but if that does not work then you need to decide whether you should allow him to continue breaking the law, any law, or doing something to stop it. |
RE: Would you turn him in?
BECAUSE I am an outdorrsman.....I can't help it....I see game laws as somehow more sacred than some other laws (If I were a highway patrolman I might feel otherwise).
Tell me you're going 9 over the speed limit.....I could care less. Tell me you're shooting more bucks than you shoud be,........and I care. But that's just me. |
RE: Would you turn him in?
So a chronic drunk driver gets a pass from you?

RE: Would you turn him in?
Well I can't answer for a couple reasons.
1) I don't have any "friends" that would do that. 2)If it was just someone I "knew" but wasn't a friend of. It depends how much I truly knew ofhis situation. Is he and his family on hard times? Does he need the food, or is it just willful and wanton waste of our Natural Resources? |
RE: Would you turn him in?
sorry man, i couldn't turn in a friend... my friends are way more important to me than any deer will ever be... if the deer are more important than your friends i seriously think you need to reevaluate your priorities... that said, i'd give him a serious talkin to, no doubt, i don't want him gettin busted or breakin the law... fortunately I know none of my friends would do that anyway, but if they did I surely wouldn't be the one callin up the GW... i play by the rules and i expect my friends to also, but i'm not gonna run outta the woods yellin "cheater cheater" the Ref either...
turning in a friend violates the Man Laws somehow doesn't it??? kinda like tellin his g/f he's gettin some on the side... |
RE: Would you turn him in?
Let's not be absurd, Bruce.
No. A chronic drunk driver doesn't get a pass from me any more than the guy who shoots 30 bucks in a one buck state does from someone who said they wouldn't turn in a friend. We can do this without putting words in people's mouths or being absurd. |
RE: Would you turn him in?
I see two issues here ...... define friend ..... is it a lifelong friend who's shooting deer to feed his family ...... is it an aquaintance that is just trying to put notches in his belt .... there are so many variables here .... Bruce, do you put the guy that is shooting deer to feed his family up there with a murderer? Do you guys blow in your friend for going over the speed limit or not wearing his seatbelt when you are with him?
|
RE: Would you turn him in?
Braking the law is braking the law! Would you turn in your friend for speeding? No, You would talk some sense into him. If he refuses to listen, dont hunt with him. People gamble in all situations; If its gods will for them to get caught, let god handle it. (Unless you need the reward money)

RE: Would you turn him in?
OK...for the sake of the "example".....let's say it's a guy you shoot 3D with. You shoot 3-4 times a week (in the off season). You find out about his hunting "escapades" only recently.
You don't have each other over for dinner.....but you're "friends". |

RE: Would you turn him in?
You guys wanna cite examples that "breaking the law = breaking the law".....and cite "speeding" as congruent to breaking game laws (like shooting too many bucks).
Are they the same? Is killing the extra buck(s) as predominant as speeding? Is it THAT easy to overlook? |

First of all you have too much time on your hands there GMMAT.
I couldn't have typed it any better than SevenMag: |

RE: Would you turn him in?
I won't speak for the Preacher, Bruce.....but I'll say this....
Ethics means doing the right thing.....when even doing the wrong thing isn't against the law. It also works the other way;). If I thought for a MINUTE someone was hunting ANY TIME .....because he needed the food to feed his family........ ...........God Bless him. |
RE: Would you turn him in?
If you knew someone was a thief (isn't killing to many bucks the same as stealing) would that be OK. If we are going to compare, lets compare like crimes. Speeding isn't stealing, taking game animals you are not allowed to take is. You are stealing the state's game animals.

Rickmur:
I've been hunting deer not 3 seasons, yet. When I pose a question like this....it's for a reason;). I'm trying to get the pulse of my peers. And seven......if you're a TRUE friend of mine and Lisa's......there's a reason. We respect you AND your spouse. An acquaintence?.....where I don't know your spouse????...well....when we hear of people cheating....that's all we'll ever be....."acquaintences". I'll tell you this.....if my friend tells me he's cheating on his wife.....I just lost a "friend". But that'sjust me. I aksed this question because it's real, to me. |
RE: Would you turn him in?
If I had a friend that felt like he needed to break the law to feed his family then I would help provide them with food. Lets be real, there are many ways to provide familys with food without having to steal it. I know it sounds noble and all that to say If he were hunting for food but the reality of it is that hunting deer does not provide vegetables, fruits, grains, etc. It only provides meat.
|
RE: Would you turn him in?
I agree with Art here depends on the severity and have a good talk with him or her.

RE: Would you turn him in?
I agree with Arthur. Breaking the law is wrong, but speeding is one thing compared to drunk driving.

RE: Would you turn him in?
Perhaps ethics in this situation is not encouraging someone to break the law but helping them put food on the table legally ;). Call it stubborn pride. Let's all be thankful that our supporting families and friends would most likely step in before it got to that stage. |
RE: Would you turn him in?
Agreed Bruce, But if it was me, before I could ask for "help" I'd do what I could to sustain my family. |

I would have done the same thing ...... but that's me |
RE: Would you turn him in?
Well, just to play devil's advocate, I agree with you MOSTLY GR8atta2d. What if we are talking the difference between steak and just meat? In this area, there is no lack of squirrel or goose. I have had squirrel before. It is actually pretty good in pot pie. I would legally fill my freezer with meat (even in a poor deer season). Do you see my point? Obviously, it is easier and probably cheaper (one shell versus several) to do it with deer. Just a thought. I certainly would not take NEEDEDfood off a man's table though.
|
RE: Would you turn him in?
It would depend on the circumstances, but no I probably wouldn't.
