Ok, I know I've seen more than one elephant hunt on the outdoor channel. As I remember they were all in south africa. They were overpopulated last year when I heard the guy on tv talking about it. If you look at most of the game ranches over there they will take you elephant hunting. Madabula safaries does that "dart" safari where you shoot it with a dart and take measurments it is more expencive than shooting it with a normal gun and killing it. You can get real elephant mounts done. They give the meat to the villagers there and eat what you can while you are there. They also give the hide to the villagers to do stuff with.

There was one hunt on last year with a guy that won the elephant hunt in some contest. He got a pretty big bull. Most of the time they do hunts on tv they are 2 part series.

Just run a search on hunting the big five and it will come up with dozens of outfitters that you can go through to go elephant hunting. They don't like bowhunters though. One of the the sites I went to listed one of the requirments for bowhunting to be able to shoot 50-75 yards accuratly. I've read several places in the past that very long shots are normal for bowhunters over there unless they hunt from a blind.

For anyone who doesn't know the african big five is: leapard, elephant, rhino, cape buffalo, and lion.

I think elephant hunts start at around $5000.00 plus the daily fee for a cow, and a bull can start a little higher for a problem bull, but a trophy bull of 50lbs or more will run you upwards of $30000, I seem to remember. You can check with any numbers of outfitters to get current pricing and speccials.
There was a bull last year that was located, said to go 100lbs, and the price was well over $100,000.00.
You can elephant hunt in any number of countries, there is still government culling, believe it or not.
Best not to buy everything the tree huggers put on the net about "endangered" species, most are doing just fine.

Exactly,
I also don't think that pelicans are endangered.

A gentleman here in upstate NY went on a tranquilizer hunt with his bow. While the elephant is dreaming you take your pictures and biologist take measurements.

From the US perspective, since you are a signatory to the CITIES (sp?) endangered species stuff, you couldn't bring back any elephant ivory. Or can you? There was some sort of one time exemption for countries, under discusion.

Not something I would want to do, but I don't see the harm, if they are croping the tuskers anyway.

No way Hill used a BH 4 inches wide, he may have used one 4" long. Rent Tembo, to see the Hollywoodized version of his exploits. He believed in long narrow BHs.

Other good books include Sagitarius. And I think the Pope and Young guys may have shot one.

Bear made a movie, and unlike a number of others, appears to have dropped it relatively quickly with a 70# bow, or thereabouts.

Standard gear, if there is such a thing, is a Hill style head like the Grizzly, and 100# bow, and 1000 grain+ arrow.

The sportingness of all this is in question. How is an American going to find an elephant, without a guide. trackers, and so forth. It is like bull fighting, you may be part of the cast, but sure as heck someone else will have a part in the killing. I think it could be interesting if it was done as in the old days, but the modern deal seems pretty silly. But then again in this field of action I haven't, as the saying goes, "seen the elephant". And it can get out of hand a great distance from the Mayo clinic.

Didn't Bear use poison pods on his African dangerous animal hunts?

I've read Bear's Field notes, and it didn't say he used a pod. If I remember right, he shot the elephant in the evening, hitting the liver. The next morning they found the bull about 300 yards from the shot. He shot it out of a large herd in a forest.
