I’ve been gone a while, and threads like this make me want to be gone some more. I’m a hunter, plain and simple. Sometimes I hunt with a bow, but I’d never call myself a “bow-hunter” simply because I don’t want people to confuse me with people like you bow-only types.

I’m glad this was posted though, because really, every hunter I know feels the same way and a lot of them hunt with bows too. Sitting in a stand during the rut is easy, even if you don’t see a deer. What did you do all day? Sit on your butt! Wow, I tip my hat to you…

I think I’ll go back to the bow hunting forum look up some real bow-hunting literature in the threads like “how can I stay awake?” “how can I get to my stand quietly” and so on.

Most of you bow-only guys would simply be lost in the woods, on the ground with a gun in your hands. You’d be so discouraged by your lack of success, when you thought it would be sooooo easy, that you wouldn’t be able to get back to your stand fast enough.

You want to challenge yourself? Make a commitment to yourself to really grow next year, even if it means to not get an animal. You hunt during bow season however you like. But during ML or shotgun and finally rifle season, get down off the stand and do some still or stalk hunting. Then be honest with yourself; how many deer did I see while hunting with each weapon? How many deer was I able to get with each weapon?

Here are my stats so far;
-Normal Bow season – I’ve seen 18 deer (some may have been the same deer but on different days)
-Special Bow only property where I can’t use a stand I’ve seen two deer, two times each. One of these was a pretty nice looking doe, the other is the big boy I’m after, but haven’t gotten a shot.
-Could have taken shots at 10 deer during bow season, but I’ve been selective because I’m trying to support team 49, and decided not to shoot the doe that is hanging out near my big guy. Go Headhunters!
-Let two arrows fly, and killed 2 doe.

Gun season (since November 17)
All my time spent still-hunting on the ground, I’ve seen three deer, and haven’t been able to take one shot. All three have been seen exiting the area in a hurry to get away from me.

Pro’s and con’s as I see them;

Bow season con’s;
-Limited shooting distance.
-Must be scent free and play the wind.

Pro’s for bow season;
-Deer are not spooked.
-Deer are diurnal.
-Rut! (scents, grunts, bleats, rattling and so on actually work)
-Deer are moving.

Gun season con’s;
-Deer are normally nocturnal.
-Rut is over.
-Must go to the deer instead of waiting for them to come to you.
-Sneaking into thick bedding areas is tough.

Gun season pro’s;
-Long shots are possible.

The skill or challenge comes from how you hunt, not what you hunt with. Sure if you were to take a 30-06 to your stand you’d be more likely to get a deer than if you had your bow, but what about the 30-06 or the ML or the 12ga on the ground?

If you’re in a stand, you’re hunting passively, if you’re on the ground moving, you’re hunting actively. From my experience in the woods, active hunting takes a lot more of everything.

Good luck and happy hunting,

KP

You all are sissies. I go out, butt naked, with nothing between me and the world but my dangly parts. I slither around like a snake and sneak up on a deer. I then put him in a trance with my Hindu/Vulcan mind tricks I learned as a youth growing up in the Himalayans, raised by a pack of Yetis. After I get the deer in a trance, I use my Zen skills to apply the five point exploding heart technique I learned while being held captive by a breed of Amazon swim suit models using me as a sex slave to help repopulate their species. Then I conger my spooky and mystic powers to cause the guts to fly out of the body, the skin to fall off, and all the meat to package itself and deposit it in my freezer at home. So I don’t want to hear any more about how much you guys are hunters. Ha, I fart in your general direction. Your mothers were hamsters, and your fathers smelt of elderberries. Now go away or ill be forced to taunt you a second time.

LMAOYou have to teach me those hindu/vulcan mind tricks for our next bigfoot hunt.
You bet. Our next West Texas bigfoot hunt, ill show you. If you get it down, you will need no kegs.

Killer

I agree with your post but I have to laugh a little because I consider myself bowhunter (shame on me) who uses a gun.. and yes I hunt from the ground and from a tree stand but it has nothing to do with the weapon in my hand..And there is nothing I love more than to spot & stalking with a bow...But what made me chuckle was that 90% of the gun hunters that I know who hunt from the ground are on the ground because that’s where their heated blind is located. And if they aren't in their blind they are in a tree stand...Nothing wrong with hunting from a blind and man its nice when its 10 degrees out and I'm in a blind and all I have on is a sweatshirt...it makes it much easier to stay out until 1pm...

....I have nothing against any other hunter, just some choices others make (yes bowhunters too). And yes I'm proud to call to myself a bowhunter...if someone calls me an elitist or something else so what... it just means that I'm more commited than them

That would go against all my training. If I were to commercialize it, the Yetis and Amazons would come for me. It’s an elite inner circle, you have to have the right decoder ring and know the proper supper secret handshake.

Great Post.

It seems like when someone mentions "gun" hunting folks, automatically assume you to be up in a tree with a scoped .300 win mag or slug gun and a deer standing in a field, eating 100yds away.

One only needs to look back one page to see what I'm taking about.[:'(]I don't know if it's elitism, lack of knowledge about gun hunting, age, narrow minded or what but it's all too common.

I love to bow hunt, I love to gun hunt, each pose their own challenges (as stated by KP above) none harder than the other and each have instances where it can be down right easy at times.

I don't have a problem with taking jabs and idle banter regarding the other forms of hunting, hey this is a "bow hunting" forum so some of that is expected.

But when jabs and banter turns into alleged gospel and fact, is where I draw the line.

Now THERE'S a voice or reason! I don't think we should EVER forget where we are.

(And BigJ and I have discussed this AT LENGTH....and absolutely agree on this WHOLE subject 100%)

Man, this is waayyy too intense. I love to bowhunt, just because that is my preference, but I just like to shoot deer. Bow, gun, slingshot (j/k), whatever. In fact, I plan on dropping some serious dough to get a really nice camera set up so I can shoot deer with that too when there are no seasons open or on Sundays.
