How many deer are in your state?
 

It has been estimated by the Va Game and Island Fisheries that Va now has something like 1.3 milliom whitetails in the state. What does you state have? We can kill 3 bucks a year and as many does as we buy stamps for.

There's the kicker VA, PA is suppose to have 1.5 million deer. We get ONE buck tag period because our license sales tally around 1 million too. As far as the deer estimate, I say eeeerrrnt, wrong answer PGC.

Missouri DOC estimates the herd at around 1 million. We, too, can kill 3 bucks and as many does as we buy tags for. Some restrictions apply to that though, such as county.

What amazes me is this.....Missouri hunters kill around 275,000 deer each year, +/- some of course...But the herd has remained pretty constant at 1 million head....That's just amazing to me.....Can you imagine how many deer there would be if we couldn't hunt them??? Well, for a few years anyway, until they all died off..

Man, we have no limits on size of bucks, all they have to have is an inch above the hair line. We can take 2 per day, but still only three bucks all year. I mean, 3 bucks is a lot compared to PA and others. I don't know why states that have lots of deer only allow one buck. Anyone know why?

VA wants the deer killed. We do have too many in much of the state. Some areas have lower pops. I wish they would drop it back to 1 buck with a bow, and one with a gun. The multiple doe tags are fine...we need the does shot. Problem I think is we don't have as many hunters as we used to....and too many people don't want to shoot a doe.

WV is worse. You can kill up to 5 bucks legally...2 with bow, 2 with gun, 1 with M/L late season. Ridiculous. They have some of the worst game laws in the country, then top that off with so many people that completely disregard all game laws....no wonder the buck to doe pop is so out of whack, and most of the bucks you do see are dinks. I know guys that have hunted their entire lives in WV, and have taken piles of bucks (each year)....and never EVER checked even one deer in. The game wardens say they care, yet when you call about something....they give a lame excuse and tell you you are on your own (the majority of the time). :(

We have a pretty healthy herd, though we have lots of does. I saw 27 does on one stand last gun season in one afternoon! They were not the same deer, they were being pushed out of a thicket and across the field. We kill something like 250,000-275,000 a year. Nc, kills that many and they have 1/2 the deer Va does. I think they may be on to something!!

Check your stats, VA......We have a LOT more than "1/2" the deer VA does (not that that is a good thing;))

In 2005 it was estimated at "roughly" (1.1M) the same numbers you give for VA.;)

On the western side of the state....it's a 2 buck limit (4 in select easternzones). We also outlaw running dogs while hunting deer, here.

The stats I gave you (1.1M) were from 2005. Our pops are GROWING.

Must be nice being EAST of the Blueridge.... here in the west we get1 per day 2 bucks a year and as many doe tags as we fell like buying at $18 per 2.East of the BR has got it made, IMO. Lots more deer too, my grandfather lives in Franklin county....wow they got DEER.

Ok GMATT, NC must be somewhat similar to Va. There are no dogs /deer running past the Blue ridge in Va either. I know in the eastern parts of NC dogs are used starting in Oct. Just like here in Va, everything east of the BR mts, it's 3 bucks a year and as many nannys as you want to buy. So, are you in that 4 buck zone? We don't have that in Va that I know of. buck master, you live and hunt where?

Our 4 buck zone begins well east of the BR range. I'm in the piedmont (near winston-salem) and it would take me a good hour to get to the BR Parkway. NC is defined by zones. I'm in a 2 buck zone....but have friends in the 4 buck zone. I took a 3rd buck in that zone, last season.....the only day I hunted, there (during gun season, too:)).

I don't know how far you have to go east to run dogs....but it's NOWHERE around here.

The last CT study I could find was 2005. At that time they estimated 76,000 deer!

Prior to the start of hunting this year there were supposed to be 1.8 million deer in Wi.

So is it more deer depending on the region?? I know that here in Va the far western part of the state doesn't have as many deer. The Blue Ridge Mt region is eat up, and also where I live in the central/ Tidewater region going to the beach is rediculous, fields are covered with deer in the evenings, Im talking about 70-125 deer in one field.

I can vouch that its 2 less than that. But that's about the number I've seen for Deerland. 1.6 to 1.8 mil.

As far as I can tell Indiana had 2 deer. An older doe and a small spike. I shot the doe so now we have 1 deer. That is all the deer I've seen in my area the past couple weeks.

In Indiana, there was a total of around125,000 deer harvested last year. Not sure what the deer population is.

In Alabama we have 1.8 million deer and to keep the herd healthy they say we sould kill 1/3 of the herd each year.

Well I know alot of people saying Deer numbers have been way down the last couple years.I know on my place use to see several Deer every day,now your lucky to see tracks.

I called Jefferson City the other day,they said they go by Computers to get an estimation on how many Deer we have.

What gets me they change their story on things.Like opening weekend kill being down they said it was because so many chose to not hunt because of it being warm.Then they said what they have been doing is working by bringing the herd into balance.

The same thing is about to happen with our Turkeys.You can not continue to kill the numbers we have,and continue to have bad hatches without numbers being way down.

In Rhode Island the smallest state in the union we have about 16,000 . Of which about 1000 a year get hit by cars and about 2000 are taken by hunters of all seasons combined

1.2 million deerthe DNR says arein Minnesota. Alot of them deer are in Northern Minnesota. Minnesota averages 240,000 deer taken each year hunting.

The 2006 estimated post hunt population in maine was 218,700. and 29,918 deer were harvested.

Ohio Division of Wildlife estimated deer population is around 675,000. Last year the deer harvest was 230,000 some deer. Seems like the ODOW aims for around that 1/3rd mark too. We are a one buck per year state and this year depending on where in the state you hunt, a hunter could at most take 1antlered deerand 6 antlerless deer.

85000 here in MA with the record single season harvest being about 13000. The picking are slim!! You guys with over a million deer just have no excuses. With that many you should be able to just go out and club them.

Not sure of the estimate of deer statewide today but the county (Franklin) that I primarily huntin Indiana has an estimated deer density of 45 per square mile.
Last info was 2005 estimate was 500,000.
