NEED TO VENT!!

Well we are about to kick off the 2 week cluster of idiots!![:@][:@][:@] I am talking about shotgun season in Iowa. I am not talking about the real hunters out there, just the other 90%the kind of guys who hunt 3 days a year. They all go out together, wound 1/2 the deer they shoot at, and get LUCKY on a big buck once in a while. Then they all gather around the local pub and tell storys of how good they can shoot or howthey are one of the best hunters around. We have a particular group here that consists of 3 bow hunters that have, between the 3 of them have shot 4 deer in their life with a bow 3 of which were button bucks, and wounded several and 11 of there (3 day a year buddys). I don't know why this bothers me so much, but I HATE shotgun season. For those 10% of you guys that are true hunters I am not aiming this at you, and you prob. feel the same way about it.I can't believe more people don't get shot. I feel a little better, thanks for listening. Oh, and good luck to you in the 10%

RE: NEED TO VENT!!

:eek:True hunters, you mean us guys who use long bows or recurves and shoot instinctive with fingers, who stalk our deer not set in a tree???

willyd5 11-30-2007 08:36 AM

RE: NEED TO VENT!!

That is exactly what i am talking about. I have been bow hunting since I was 9 years old. I do hunt with compounds also, but have shot well over 10 deer with recurve several that were stalked. I have a 13 year old daughter who ONLY shoots a long bow won't even pick up a compound.

You have it good in iowa. Our rifle season is still going and it started two weeks ago! Guys in trucks with rifles not shotguns. Atleast your season is not in the peak of the rut two weeks ago. I sit at home during the best time of the year. Iowa has one of the best plans IMO!

I am a bowhunter at heart, yet I look forward to the gun season here in Iowa each year as well. I hunt with a group, and enjoy each minute of it. It is a totally different experience than bowhunting or even gun hunting from a stand. IMHO, we are fortunate to have so many options to hunt as we wish, and are equally blessed to have an enormous amount of deer in this state that gives us this luxury. As in any sport, there will always be the few that tarnish the image of the whole, but keep in mind that many of these one-week-a-year-hunters you are cursingare the very farmers that own much of the land we hunt and feed the very deer we hunt with bows the rest of the season.;)

I feel the same way Willy.

A few properties that we hunt are exlusively ours for bow season, however, once the NJ 6-Day Firearm Season kicks off (Dec 3-8) the farmers come out with everyone that they know and push the crap out of the woods. They killed 16 bucks over 130" last year, in ONE TOWNSHIP, in ONE DAY!

Also, some of the farmers use night permits. They go out with 20g H&R Slug guns, at Midnight - 1 or 2 AM and spotlight the deer. Its legal, however they intentially gut shoot each deer. That way, they dont have to report the kill and have the Game Wardens come check the deer. The deer run in the woods, and die later.

I did a few drives this year and it was fun. HOWEVER, it was fun more becuase I got to spend time with my friends directly. As far as hunting goes, give me a stick and string ANYDAY.
That is just wrong! Gut Shooting!!! Man… that really doesn’t set well IMO. I live in Iowa and do party hunting (mainly for population control, I only shoot the doe’s with a slug gun) plus the meat is nice.

I just got in to Bow hunting and muzzle loading and these are the only ways I will shoot a buck. The deer around here are very thick and people are hitting them with there vehicles everyday, you should see the body shop business this times of year. I am sure it is that way in many parts of the state country.

Party hunting is a slaughter fest it is really not even a challenge; which is why I only shoot at the doe’s. But If I don’t hunt them someone else will. Yeah it is dangerous! I can’t tell you how many of our guys have had to hit the deck

I did a lot of party hunting last year and it kind of left a bad taste with me, several people in my group shot and killed very large bucks just because they new were they were going to be at that time of day.

Yeah the farmers are the ones who let us hunt and I am very grateful, they really do not like the deer (bucks or doe) since they destroy a lot of there prize crops and I don’t blame them one bit. I used to farm 7 years ago.

For me deer hunting has become more of an art rather then a sport.

I love blanket statements, they are so warm and snuggly.

I think we had an almost identical thread yesterday.

Out of all of the pub drinking, no shooting, slob shotgunners I hate this guy the most:

Hmmm, sounds very similar to the way many bowhunters harvest their big deer, which is learning the deerstravel routes and then intercepting them.;)

RE: NEED TO VENT!!

Yeah but how hard is it to stalk deer with gun? I could have had me a nice 10 pointer 2 hours ago but since I had a bow it was not a possible shot. And if you know where deer are going to be when you have a gun you just have to show up and shoot but with a bow you need to get there before they do unless you are an excellent stalker and that still does not guarantee a harvest or opportunity for a shot.

(I am not arguing just explaining my view) I guess I forgot to mention that these hunters knew they should not be on the land that there were on when they took those deer. They got away with it that time. (Should have posted that the first time)

I just think the trophy means so much more if taken with a bow rather a gun. The bow hunter has to get a lot closer to the game and be more stealthily for significantly longer time. They have to master the game calls, fight off the freezing cold while only sitting and hardly moving. Then make a great shot for a humane harvest.

These are just my views not trying to argue with anyone or be disrespectful. I know some don’t see it that way which is fine.

I caught the wink ;)

i love to bow hunt, but as much as i love it, i love rifle season in wisconsin. its a season filled with more comradery and seeing friends that you dont always get to see. I think gun season for me at least is the family part of the hunting season. bow season is great but as much as i look forward to it, i look forward to gun season just as much. if you think im less of a hunter for it, so be it, i dont care, i know im a true hunterwhether people do or dont like gun season

L. Clement 11-30-2007 08:15 PM

RE: NEED TO VENT!!

I like gun season as well, but I was just stating that the big buck taken with a bow is such a more satisfying experience. You make a good point about this spending quality time with the family and friends. I miss being able to do that.

I don’t think less of guns because I still use one on doe’s and muzzles on bucks. As you know some hunters seem to abuse there privileges and it seems as if the ones that carry guns get the flack. I know of a few bow hunters that were caught poaching around my neck of the woods and that was bad for us all.

Good luck this season.

Rifles, shotguns, bows, arrows? Anyone who doesn't cover themselves in mud and lay on the ground waiting in ambush with a sharp stick in their mouth might as well just not even show up.

You will find very few people on here who want to cheerlead about how great we are because we bow hunt. Hunters are hunters. Needless of how they do it. We need to stick together. Losers are losers. Needless of what weapon they use to be loser. But I get so sick of seeing people come on here and start to berate others and try to get us all to jump in on the , "im a better hunter because", band wagon. I feel it is very harmful to hunting, period. As for your mister trady statement, you missed the purpose of my post, so no need to explain it.
