What is everyones experience with hunting winter wheat as a late season food source?

From my experience, it's "ok" as the fresh young shoots break through. After that, it's poor at best.

In Texas, its just about the best food source. Every deer i gut, I open the stomach to see what they are eating, and all have lots of winter wheat in them. Im speaking of west Texas. We dont have trees, so there is not many oaks for acorns or anything else for that matter.

Ive shot many staging to go out on wheat fields.

I saw 22 deer in 2 hours yesterday evening sitting over a newly sprouting winter wheat field.
