Hit one and didn't recover him (not what you think)

Yes, I hit one and couldn't find him. The real problem is that I hit him with my truck![:@]Coming home last night from my soccer game I am rounding a curve in the road not 2 miles from my house and out from the weeds on the side of the road jumps this 1.5 year old buck with his nose to the ground. I mashed the brakes but it was too late and WHAMMO! I pulled over and got out to see if he was still there. He was. He was laying in the middle of the lane just looking at me. I called my dad (who is my neighbor) to come and bring a gun so we could put him out of his misery and at least use the meat. Before he got there, a car came from the other direction and drove right past the little guy. This spooked it and he stood up and walked off the road and down across the corn field adjacent to the road. I never did find him. I don't know if I just knocked him out or what, but I have to guess he probably died or will die from the incident.
I tell you, ever since I killed my bucks this year my luck has just gone to pot. Problems at work, home, and now a $1000 deductable to get my truck fixed. I believe that luck evens out over time, but I would definitely trade my bucks back for the crap that has happened since. Oh well, what can you do?
