RE: How do you shoot a deer directly under you?

Last year I had a doe come in from a direcion that I had not expected. Unless I had shot it in the head(NOT), the only shot that was going to present itself was a straight down shot. Once it traveled past me it would have been behind brush and trees. I took the shot and spined it and put the second arrow through the lungs. So it does work, but is not a high percentage shot. So if there is the possibility of a shot when it exits your area, it is best to take it then when it is quartering away from you.

The best of luck in all your hunting endeavors!!!

God Bless,
Dave

RE: How do you shoot a deer directly under you?

I've shot many deer that were CLOSE to under me, but not directly. I practice the shot, but more of from the 5 yard and out range. It would be insane to try and shoot through the grate on the platform. Deer that are directly under me have to at some point give me a better shot... even if it's only 5 yards. This deer was shot this year at close and dropped where I hit it. It was early and still a little dark. This is about as close as I want to take the shot and would have waited for him to pass except for the other 10 or so following him that might have picked me off. Plus, if he turned right I'm in trouble.

RE: How do you shoot a deer directly under you?

chdeerbio,

It is not a matter of confidence in being able to hit the target.I could put the arrow where it needed to be 99 out of a 100 times but when shooting straight down, the vitals are very narrow(lungs)and a few inches apart. This creates a big void in your shot placement. If you say to just shoot the spine, well, that gives you a target that is maybe 2" wide.If you miss the spine, the arrow goes between the lungs and you never find the animal. It is quite possible to miss on a deer that close because he will move when the arrow is released, and it doesn't matter how fast the bow is.He may only move 2 inches but that is all that is needed to miss the spine and go between the lungs for a bad hit.

The question was asked where do some of us hunt.I hunt in western Ky and in some thick country.I will usually be able to wait and get a better shot than the straight down shot.Even if it is just 5 yards, there is a big difference between a 5 yard shot and 1 that is straight down. Not always will a shot present itself but most of the time it will.

You can do what you like,it really makes me no difference to me but I prefer to stick with better odds.I actually know 1 guy that has lost 3 deer from shooting straight down and a few others that have lost at least 1.

RE: How do you shoot a deer directly under you?

I've shot deer at maybe 5 yards before. They didn't go very far. One dropped stone dead (aimed for the neck) and one went about 100 yards (aimed in between the shoulders). I don't recomend the shot. I wouldn't try it again, at the time I didn't know it was a bad shot. I figured the closer the better.

I would say not to try the shot unless you are gun hunting. It worked for me and Chdeerbio, but I think more deer have probably been lost than gained with this shot. I hunt in west central Georgia.

Look at the anatomy of a deer. Between the shoulders is NOT the place to aim from above. The center/bulk of the vitals sits behind the shoulders. More room for error where you aimed plus a harder target to penetrate if you happen to hit the shoulders. A lot of bone in that area. The vitals are further back. You must aim behind the shoulders.

If they're that close I usually abandon the bow, jump on it's back and use the Bowie Knife! YEEEEEHAWWWW!

Kind of a mix between Steer/Deer riding and hunting!

Davidmil,
I did go a little back from directly inbetween the shoulders. I should of been more specific. Thanks for bringing that up.
