I agree completely Drop. I just get discouraged from time to time when I dont see a lot of bigger bucks on the properties that I have been hunting for a while and passing on small bucks. I missed a good one last week and havent seen him since, and started to think about all the other bucks I have passed on that property.

Sound like like me hunting in Minnesota. I feel that I'm doing MY part in management. I know that there are only so many tags the neighbors have, they can't shoot all the ones I pass on. With that being said, I can only hope the best for them. Cars, and natural causes also take their toll. But I know/think that by passing on smaller bucks, I'm doing MY part in raising the potential in MY area.
Where you at in Minnesota?
East Central.....Near North Branch, Cambridge, Forest Lake areas. Hour north of MSP on 35 if that helps.

I just keep thinking that if I let all the smaller bucks go, then I will have bigger bucks in the future. It really hasn't worked out that way since I started passing on a lot of younger bucks. I haven't seen a noticeable increase in larger more mature deer.
A lot depends on the land. The amount of land you are hunting on and what your neighbors are doing. If you're hunting a 200 acre chunk of land and passing on 1.5 year old bucks only for them to cross the property line and get whacked then, no you're efforts won't be rewarded IMO.

I hunt the same as you do. I've hunted one particular piece of 150 acres that I've hunted all my life. To see a buck make it past 2.5 years out there would be a miracle. Ove 1,000 acre area there are probably 7-10 different hunting parties that are going to shoot any bone they see. I go out there because it is a deer factory and I like taking my kids out so they can see deer.

A different piece of land I hunt is similar. It's 400 acres, BUTI talk with all the surrounding hunting parties and EVERYONE over at least a square mile plays by the same rules. Everyone passes on young bucks (bow and gun season). It has REALLY paid off big time. There are some studs running around there now.

NY can and does grow some big bucks. Just have to find the right situation. Keep on plugging away ... good luck to ya.

Ive been letting smaller bucks walk, but it does make you upset when someone shoots a small one near you, or even a buck you let walk.
I would like to own a nice piece of land and manage it the way I want to.
anyone got a few hundred thousand dollars to throw my way? maybe a mil?

I would rather shoot does than small young bucks.

Thats me too, I am a trophy hunter and a meat hunter, lets face it bucks are not as good eating as a yearling or 2 year old doe. So I pass on young bucks as well, if it's not something to be proud of I will let it walk, this year I passed on a nice 2 1/2 yr old 8 pointer, I shot a yearling doe right beside him, this was with a bow so it's still a descent trophy to me and the best eating you can find.
But I will not condemn anyone who shoots small bucks, if it makes you proud then take it, and thats the key ( if it makes you proud). Most hunters get to a stage in their life when they start letting young bucks walk, usually after years of hunting.

Here’s my philosophy.

Good bucks DO exist in or very near to the areas I hunt. I’ve shot a pile of little guys back in the day, shooting another does nothing for me. I don’t think that all those little guys I pass on will live to grow old, but some do each year cause they are around. What I do know is that each season there is a few bucks worth shooting (to me) so those are the ones I hope to see in season. Sometimes I need a bit of luck for them to travel as they are on neighboring properties. It’s not often that my summer scouting reveals any directly on the property I have access to. But chunks are small, so a buck could easily cross 5-6 peoples property in a single day under normal conditions, without it even being the rut. Now should my situation change in the future good or bad, I would probably adjust my definition of a shooter accordingly. I don’t foresee any change so severe that I would go back to shooting 1.5 year old bucks though.

There are some monster bucks patroling the city limits arond the cities! I wish i could hunt close to there! Ever been to the big traditional shoot they have in Coon Rapids?
