hunting mock scrapes. how many of you hunt mock scrapes? I have never set one up and thought about trying one this year. How long does it have to be up to work can I use it on a 4 day hunt or does it have to set up longer than that to have deer come into it. I was planning on using it when I went to SD this week but if it is going to take a while for deer to start coming in to it then I will just set it up here before I leave and hunt it when I get back any advice would be great thanks

When you make a mock scrape, what you are doing is trying to get a buck to come in and either take that scrape over as his own or try to confront the intruder in his area. Id say you wont have much luck hunting over one until you see sign that a buck has checked or freshened the mock scrape. Its kinda like having two male dogs divided by a fence, when one comes out and marks by the fence you can almost garantee the other will do the same next time he is around. The only problem is bucks do most of that at night, thats why if you freshen it during the day it can kinda train the buck to check it during the day if he wants to catch the intruder. Id make it at least a week in advance maybe longer.

I have made mock scrapes before and had a buck in it with 15 minutes of making it. They can work right away. Here is how I do it. I find a small tree within 20 yards of my stand. I make sure it has a shooting lane. I then use a pretty good sized stick or limb and start working the ground. I make sure there are no leaves in it and make sure I really turn up the dirt. Then I will take a tarsal gland or a scent wick (key style) and hang it on a limb above the scrape. I then put dominant buck urine on the tarsal gland or wick. Then I place Tinks 69 in the scrape. I make sure I get rid of the stick or limb I used to make the scrape due to not wanting any of my scent being on it. I then make sure I rehydrate the gland or wick everytime I hunt the stand. I usually make one scrape per stand location...

I picked up one of the those active scrap drip bags is that the same as using the wick? also will using a decoy around a mock scrape increase my chances or is that just to much? Thanks for the help

I use a scent dripper on all my portable tree stand site. Key is to put dripper high above mock scrape over a licking branch. The scent is better distributed when its on the licking branch. I have killed several mature bucks with this setup. The best scent I have used is Still Steamin for this setup.
