I heard someone here talk about this with elk,

If you kill a buck, as soon as you find it, shove a candy bar wrapper up it's nose, and tag it. If someone else says it's thiers, just back off and call a game warden. You have proof you were thier first when they tell thier story first and then you pull a wrapper out of the deer's nose.

This doesn't fix every situation, but it does help sometimes, like public land hunting where there are lots of game wardens on hand.

People DO pull guns on you while you are hunting... It has happened to me 2 years ago when I was hunting private property. Opening day of general gun I found 5 tresspassers in different locations. I was polite to every one of them. 3 of them were from the huntclub next door.It was one of them that pointed his rifle at me, from ten yards away.

To make a long story short(& less boring) I DID pull my Smith and he DID lower his rifle. He was quite surprised to see a semi-auto come from a holster on my belt.

BTW YES I will make a stand for a deer that I've shot, even a doe. You let them get away with it once and they just might get you again next year,if not you then someone else.

I dont care if it is a deer or someone breaking in to my home my car I'm going to defend it. If somone catches me off guard and has a gun pointed at me ,I quess I would not have much choice at that moment. But I would try and remember every detail of their discription and details.I would not let it rest till I caught up to them sooner or later. If they have no weapon pointed at me and they want a battle over my deer,There the one with the gun in their face.I have been ask off of a stand under gun point in 1987.I had permission from the landowner to hunt there. This dude said He was the only one that had permission to hunt.I left went home called the Cops and had him arrested for the assualt.I had my crossbow and canes and chair smashed while sitting in gamelands 52 in Berks co. Pa. by some dudes who did not like my crossbow. They left me there to struggle back to my truck. When I arrived at my truck all the tires were flat.I hunted these idiots down eventually and had my revenge. And I take the fifth on the details. That is one reason I will never hunt on public land again.Only on private land that I'm the only one that has permission to hunt. If you find your self in a area with mutiple hunters and you get to your deer before someone else, have a prepared note ready to stuff in the deers mouth as far as you can.Put your license # on it and your name. Then follow up on the slobs and call the proper officials to check the deers mouth out.I carry pepper spray also, give the idiots a shot of that then take their weapons from them while they are rolling around the ground screaming.

If a gun was involved I would back off and let them have it, I would also make a note of everything I could to where I could get them arrested. If there was no gun.........I don't know, it would depend upon the whole situation, but at this point in time in my life I have 3 kids still at home and a wife to think about also, so I probably would let them have it and do every thing in my power to get them prosecuted.

For those who doubt things like this happen you are wrong, it has been happening for years, my uncle was part time game warden and just in his county it happened at least once a year.

I think that a little precautionary measures to avoid being put into a vulnreable situation might deter would be thieves. When approaching your deer be aware of the surrounding, people etc. If you see someone coming towards you, do not relax, keep your gun loaded and at a semi ready position. Never be bent over the deer for too long to allow someone to approach and catch you off guard. If some one comes to talk about the kill, talk, and try to figure if thier intentions are genuine. Regardless of your feelings to defend the deer or not, avoiding having to make that decision is the best scenerio.

If you've never looked down the wrong end of a gun, you have no idea what it's like. If you have, you know it changes your thinking. It's hard to remain calm and rational when you're not sure what's going to happen next. Survival is primary. The deer is secondary. When someone has the drop on you, they call the immediate shots. Resist doing anything irrational. Hopefully you'll get out of the situation unmarked. As Taz said, I have a family. My boys need a father. My chose to marry me. I shudder to think what her second choice would be.<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well, I have looked into a gun barrel, and NO, I wouldn't put myself in that position again for a game animal. However, if it wasn't at gunpoint, we're going to go at it.
If it's a group, or at gunpoint, no man's gonna beat me out of the woods draggin 100-200lbs behind him, and if I can't get the warden to come out and straighten things out, I'll be taking my revenge another day, but I'll sure as hell be taking it. Long memory I have. Once you have his license number, you can get his name and address, and he's at your mercy for as long as you want, however you want. &quot; His&quot; deer will wind up costing him tens of thousands of dollars, and quite possible a good beating or three.
Let him have the deer, but go get his tag number.

Think of it the other way. Whose deer is it. I have hunted for years and more than once shot a deer that someone else had hit. One time several good friends of mine had the discussion of whose deer it was. We argue to this day who shot the deer. No big deal it was a small doe but what if it was a wall hanger.

I think many of us find these stories hard to believe because its something we couldn't imagine doing. What honest, ethical hunter would want to claim a deer that someone else shot? That being said, however, it is unfortunate that the woods do include hunters that are neither honest or ethical.

A couple years ago I had the good fortune to take my best buck ever. It was during the southern-zone gun season in NY. It was late in the day and I had just dropped a big 8 pointer. Before I field-dressed it I made the 300yd walk back to get my truck just in case I needed the headlights to finish up.

On the way back to my deer I noticed another hunter near my stand. It was the landowners neighbor (Dave). He asked me if I had any luck. My first impulse was to tell him no. I'd met him a time or two before and there was something about him that made me uncomfortable. My rifle was already packed away in the truck and he still had his ready to go. Unfortunately, my deer lay only about 25yds away so I really had no choice.

As soon as he saw my buck he started asking me if I was alone or if someone was hunting with me all the while drooling and commenting on how big a deer it was. I think he asked me at least 3 times if I was alone. Fortunately, my nephew was only about 300yds away in his stand. He called me on the radio to see how I was doing. I mentioned that (Dave) was with me. Dave then starts asking how far away my nephew is and whether he's coming to meet me. Now most guys might think he was just wondering if I needed help but he stood there and watched me drag this 200lb + deer out of a thicket onto the edge of the field and never offered any help.

My nephew had met Dave before also and as soon as I mentioned he was with me he was out of his stand and on his way. Dave disappeared as quickly as he appeared once there was 2 of us. Do I think he would have tried to forcibly claim my deer? - I'll never know. Do I think he was thinking about it? - There is no doubt in my mind.

Let them have the deer. It isn't worth getting
killed or going to jail over. I have only heard
of it happening here in NY once and the buy that
said it was a BIG BSer so I dont know if I believe
him. As for calling a game warden, they might show
up the next day.
