Creek ran completely dry, concerns - opinions
#1
Well as Im sure most of us are experiencing, we have been in drought conditions. We have a creek that runs down the center of our 2,200 acre property, which is 1.4 miles end to end, weve had the propertythe last 10 yearsand have never seen the creek even come colse to being dried up. Normally its10 to 15 feet wide and has fast running areas and slow moving deeper areas. We have even duck hunted occassionallyas it holds lots of ducks. Well, right now its as dry as the moon. We have no other water on our property except around the barns and stables for the horses. There is a major river (Potomac)about3/4 mile from the South end of our property. I have noticed a steady decline in seeing deer, and deer activity the last month. My main question is, will the deer that have been there the past years start moving out to where there is ample water for them to surive. We dont have any ponds, our neighbors dont. Here is the property so you can see the layout. Im thinking the far SouthWest woods where the creek crosses the road may be a possible funnel for the deer to get to the river and only real water source as all the creeks are dry. Am I worried for nothing or will the deer start relocating? Ive never experienced this before so Im looking for some opinions.

The same thing is happening here to. Last year I seen tons of deer at this time in the season and now I am lucky to see 1 the entire day. I am sure you will still have deer on your property, but most of them will probably hang out near the water source. But I dont know much so my opinion probably wont count

Well, you may be "up a creek"
for this year with no water on the property, but something to think about for next year is to create some small ponds for just such a situation. If there is no water for the deer, they will not be around much.

I'm in Virginia and the deer here are hitting every little mud hole with water. I've come acress deep mud holes with water in logging roads with literally dozens of tracks in the mud from where their drinking. Look for any such water sources on the property. You'd be surprised how often they hit these type of water sources.

We actually have a pond, or had a pond at the south end of the property, it was only about 6 feet deep atfer silt fill over the years, and it was only about 40 feet in circumfernce, but again, its NEVER been dry before.
