RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Sorry for the long story but this is what happened to me.
Last year during muzzleloader season on the 3rd night I was driving around looking for somthing to stalk (crappy weather) when I drove by my grandpas home farm that has lots of switch grass patches. I noticed a doe and fawn on the closer edge of the grass and thought aloud to myself "Why cant you be two big bucks?" Just then God reached down and dropped two bucks down in the patch on the other side. I half stop half go in the ditch to get my binos up long enough to see that one is a shooter. So I pull in on a service road for the windmills on his farm (yes they are like personal gravel roads). Well as luck would have it the corn had been stripped and the end rows taken out. So get a long ways away so they dont hear me and start my trek. I get all the way down to the edge where I think they are going to come out of the grass about 100 yards away. Well no sooner do I start looking when I notice a basket 8 that I had somehow overlooked in the corn stubble. huh... Ithought that deer was bigger. Then I see movement in the grass and my brain decides its time to get buck fever to the MAX. I was shaking so hard I couldnt even count the points (10+). I proceed to panic trying to figure out what to do because he is taken FOREVER to get out into the open. He literally takes one step forward stops looks 780 degrees looking for somthing wrong. Takes another step stops...UGH! At this point I am a wreck, So I slowly stand and he is in a little clearing facing me directly. At this point the wind is blowing like it always does in Iowa, which is alot. It is alsostarting to shift a bit so that the little "bodygaurd" buck as I so appropriatly named him will scent me soon.So I try to stabilize myself on a cornstalk. I center it on his chest and squeeze...... Wind blows, gun shoots, deer run, I get pissed at myself. That deer still haunts me. A day later on a farm one section away, in the direction the deer ran I pick up a fresh HUGE deer print. I follow it along a corn field all the way to the end. Who doI see coming out into the open to investigate the noise going through the corn stubble? Why "bodygaurd" of course. He sees me and takes off[:'(], and though I didnt see the big one with him that time I'm postive he was due to his tracks. Here is a pic of the bodygaurd this year. HE WILL GET SMOKED! if I see him this year. I owe him. ![]() |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Biggest buck I've missed was maybe 120 and last year I saw one that pushed 160 but I was tagged out and filming for a friend. He was in bow range of me but not him, Go figure.;)

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
It was 5 years ago. I was hunting a ground made out of limbs off a pine tree over looking a biologic field. It was about half an hour till shooting hours were over and several does filtered into the field on a trail not 10 yards from me. As I was trying to pick out a doe to shoot, I heard a grunt behind me. I slowly turned and saw horns coming through the brush on the same trail the does were on. He stopped out in front of me at a20 yard chip shot and I blew it right over his back.
Without a doubt probably the biggest buck I will ever see. He was a huge 12 pointer and a very visable one too. I had said he was about 180 and2 days later my dad saw him and backed up that statement. About a week later a friend of the family was coming and saw a huge 12 pointer that he claimed would go from 180-190. We continued seeing this deer for another 2 years and I had him at 30 yards the following year but he was behind some brush and never came any closer. The next day a friend that was hunting with me missed him at 40 yards. The following year I saw him several time in Augustfeeding in a bean field while he was still in velvet, but never saw him once the season came in. |

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Booners in Florida are about as scare as alligators in Alaska. Have missed a Poper here though, a great Florida ten with outstanding tine length. He was chasing a doe and I actually grunted him off the doe. He came in to twenty yards and stood facing my tree panting like a dog for about ten minutes. When he finally turned broadside I made a perfect shot on the palmetto bush directly under his heart. Have killed over a hundred deer in Florida with my bow, but no monsters. One tip for hunting big bucks, you can't kill 'em where they don't exist. Been hunting the midwest the last few years and done good!

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I have seen a booner, but he was out of range. THe real sad thing is that on the way to my standI walked past him at 20 yards beded down and never even saw him. I have "missed" a 140s class deer. The arrow hit the shoulder and with a low poundage bow it didnt penetrate enough to kill the buck.

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
You can check me down for that....I missed a buck that would have scored high 180's to low 190's.....palmated Lt. main beam, and a main frame 12.....still makes me sick to this day....2 inches under his belly :(
