How many people have missed a Booner?
I saw this thread on another website and there were some great stories, so I thought I would post the question here as well. How many people have missed a Booner? Fortunately, knock on wood, I've yet to miss a buck. However, on two occasions last year while taking the 30 minute long treck to my spot during the rut, I did have two amazing encounters with a 160" ten and 180"plus nontypical. It seems every morning I make that drive to the farm, it's like running the gauntlet! You never know when one will pop out in the road in front of you! Talk about the show of a lifetime, these deer were no more than 30 yards away from our now "stopped truck" and with our brights on, it's as if they knew they were "on stage" putting on a show for us taking their good old time dogging does back and forth across the county roads we were on. Knowing perfectly well it wasn't legal shooting time yet, they trotted off out of range of our brights and into the woods. Those two encounters lasted around 30 seconds each. Talk about getting pumped up, my father, brother-in-law, buddy from work and myself were all in the truck with our jaws on the floor. Unfortunately, those two sitings happened to be during a full moon, and based on the rest of day on both of those occasions, they must have done all their running around at night under that full moon, b/c we didn't see a whole lot of anything the rest of the day. Still a great day nontheless! This is the closest a Booner ever came to one of my stands, that I know of anyway! ![]() |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I've never seen a deer in the wild that would go 110".
Not even SEEN one....... |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Last year I hit a twig that I had not noticed right about 10 yards in front of me. I was shooting at a 160" class buck.(biggest ive seen while hunting). Before that buck I had not missed in 15 tries. I was sick for a week. Now, I just think that buck must have something or someone looking out for him.;)LOL. Makes me feel a little better anyways.

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Had a 160-170(not good at judging just going by what i have seen on here)12 pointer 35-40 yards out last year, problem was i just shot a small 6 point 2 minutes before he came through, everyone tells meI should have shot it anyways and left the other, but i think i made the right decision and would do it again, if it happened. Anyways it was taken on the last day of gun season by the land owners neighbor. Just great to have seen something that big.

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I have never even seen a booner buck in the wild. Hopefully when I do I will be able to keep my cool.

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
No one ever believes me when i say this....but here it goes..
Three years ago at about 8:30AM i got what i would say would be about 150-160 class come in to twenty yards on the rattle bag. Drew back nervous as HE** and my release loop broke. Arrow sailed way over the top of the buck. I knocked another arrow but by this time he was GONE!!! Ill never forget that one. |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
No booners but I havemissed a 160" class buck. (choke!)
I had a 190-200" class typical (I'm dead serious. It was a huge, awesome buck) stand, in front of me, slightly quartering awayat 40 yards for several long, agonzing minutes. It had busted out of a willow thicket, chasing does and out into the cut corn field in front of me. 40 yards was too far. So I just stood and drooled. To this day, I'm glad I didn't take the shot. |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Sorry for the long story but this is what happened to me.
Last year during muzzleloader season on the 3rd night I was driving around looking for somthing to stalk (crappy weather) when I drove by my grandpas home farm that has lots of switch grass patches. I noticed a doe and fawn on the closer edge of the grass and thought aloud to myself "Why cant you be two big bucks?" Just then God reached down and dropped two bucks down in the patch on the other side. I half stop half go in the ditch to get my binos up long enough to see that one is a shooter. So I pull in on a service road for the windmills on his farm (yes they are like personal gravel roads). Well as luck would have it the corn had been stripped and the end rows taken out. So get a long ways away so they dont hear me and start my trek. I get all the way down to the edge where I think they are going to come out of the grass about 100 yards away. Well no sooner do I start looking when I notice a basket 8 that I had somehow overlooked in the corn stubble. huh... Ithought that deer was bigger. Then I see movement in the grass and my brain decides its time to get buck fever to the MAX. I was shaking so hard I couldnt even count the points (10+). I proceed to panic trying to figure out what to do because he is taken FOREVER to get out into the open. He literally takes one step forward stops looks 780 degrees looking for somthing wrong. Takes another step stops...UGH! At this point I am a wreck, So I slowly stand and he is in a little clearing facing me directly. At this point the wind is blowing like it always does in Iowa, which is alot. It is alsostarting to shift a bit so that the little "bodygaurd" buck as I so appropriatly named him will scent me soon.So I try to stabilize myself on a cornstalk. I center it on his chest and squeeze...... Wind blows, gun shoots, deer run, I get pissed at myself. That deer still haunts me. A day later on a farm one section away, in the direction the deer ran I pick up a fresh HUGE deer print. I follow it along a corn field all the way to the end. Who doI see coming out into the open to investigate the noise going through the corn stubble? Why "bodygaurd" of course. He sees me and takes off[:'(], and though I didnt see the big one with him that time I'm postive he was due to his tracks. Here is a pic of the bodygaurd this year. HE WILL GET SMOKED! if I see him this year. I owe him. ![]() |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Biggest buck I've missed was maybe 120 and last year I saw one that pushed 160 but I was tagged out and filming for a friend. He was in bow range of me but not him, Go figure.;)

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
It was 5 years ago. I was hunting a ground made out of limbs off a pine tree over looking a biologic field. It was about half an hour till shooting hours were over and several does filtered into the field on a trail not 10 yards from me. As I was trying to pick out a doe to shoot, I heard a grunt behind me. I slowly turned and saw horns coming through the brush on the same trail the does were on. He stopped out in front of me at a20 yard chip shot and I blew it right over his back.
Without a doubt probably the biggest buck I will ever see. He was a huge 12 pointer and a very visable one too. I had said he was about 180 and2 days later my dad saw him and backed up that statement. About a week later a friend of the family was coming and saw a huge 12 pointer that he claimed would go from 180-190. We continued seeing this deer for another 2 years and I had him at 30 yards the following year but he was behind some brush and never came any closer. The next day a friend that was hunting with me missed him at 40 yards. The following year I saw him several time in Augustfeeding in a bean field while he was still in velvet, but never saw him once the season came in. |

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Booners in Florida are about as scare as alligators in Alaska. Have missed a Poper here though, a great Florida ten with outstanding tine length. He was chasing a doe and I actually grunted him off the doe. He came in to twenty yards and stood facing my tree panting like a dog for about ten minutes. When he finally turned broadside I made a perfect shot on the palmetto bush directly under his heart. Have killed over a hundred deer in Florida with my bow, but no monsters. One tip for hunting big bucks, you can't kill 'em where they don't exist. Been hunting the midwest the last few years and done good!

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I have seen a booner, but he was out of range. THe real sad thing is that on the way to my standI walked past him at 20 yards beded down and never even saw him. I have "missed" a 140s class deer. The arrow hit the shoulder and with a low poundage bow it didnt penetrate enough to kill the buck.
|
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
You can check me down for that....I missed a buck that would have scored high 180's to low 190's.....palmated Lt. main beam, and a main frame 12.....still makes me sick to this day....2 inches under his belly :(

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I missed possibly the biggest 8 point I've ever seen anywhere - including in magazines and at hunting shows. THREE TIMES,my arrow started to fall off the rest as I began to draw on him (I was still using fingers back then). I finally reached full draw and saw the arrow start lifting off the rest due to finger pinch. I canted the bow so the arrow would go back to where it should be and banged the tip of it against my rattling antlers![:@][:@][:@]
He took his eyes off the doe and looked right at me while I standing there at full draw with an arrow that's not even on the rest! I missed that monster and a friend witnessed the whole thing. All together, four of us saw the huge buck and we allagreed that his G2's were about 18" and his G3's about 15. He was a gigantic 8 point and had a spread of about 23 -25". |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I did on a 180's buck in Illinois!![:@]The problem was I didn't even get to shoot. I had watched this buck for a week switching runways into the field and I know he was coming out on the run way I had hung my stand on. But instead of paying attention to where he should be coming from I was watching a 130 class run a doe all around the field in front of me, when I heard a branch break and there was my 180 standing 10 yards away. Well I hung my bincos very slowly and reached for my bow all while watching the buck and when I picked up my now the tip of my arrow hit a branch and rattled.. Bye bye mister buck!!![&:]Thats what happens when you don't pay attention!!! Walt

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I was trying to forget that painful day. Thanks. I had a giant 10 come right in under mystand. He was exactly 4 yards from the base of my tree. I never practice a shot like this. It close right, chip shot. He came in so quick and crossed the little creek in front. I gave him a little whistle and whif right over his back. I still remember as he ran away. He was 200 lbs if he was a pound. He stumbled in the mud a bit and you could see how wide his body was. Then like a freight train crashed through the woods. Last time I ever saw him. Boy that makes me mad just thinking about it. I have a 147 10point and he doesn't hold a candle to that one. Perfect rack perfect color. Not to dark not to white. I am going to go and cry now. An possible be sick again.

RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Last season in the beginning of Nov. I had this buck come by me at 15-20 yds. I first seen him from about 75yds out and grunted at him twice and then the CAN twice. He came in on a dead run and stopped about 35yds out and started thrashing a tree. I couldn't believe my eyes! Then as he was coming by my stand on a steady trott I tried to stop him with a baaawww! Nothing... and another baaawwww! nothing.... so I went HEY! Then by the time he stopped he was past my shooting lane and 40 yds out in the brush. Then he turned his head and kept on his way out of my life. I've never seen anything that big in the woods or in person by someone else. Almost started crying when I seen that deer cross a ridge and then was gone. The next time I see him he's on the back of an ATV in gun season. One of the other hunters that hunts around us got him about 1 mile from where I seen him in early Nov.

|
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Never seen a Booner around my area, probably never seen one that would go over 120.
|
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I've seen 4 and missed one. In 2005 I hit a branch on a 180". Last year I saw 2 180"+ and one 200"+.......but they were out of range.
|
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
never had the opportunity at one..
|
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I've missed more then one. And have never killed one. Hope I get another chance. But you only get so many chances if any at a deer that big. Makes me sick to think about some of the bucks I've had chances at.
But that's why I love to do this! Darrall |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
Biggest buck i have ever seen while on the stand was a buck that would go about 150-160 to me he was a giant and for this area that is some what rare.
Just to see a buck while hunting that would go over 170' would be awesome. |
RE: How many people have missed a Booner?
I did..............the day before i got my 4x4 this season........i stopped him perfectly at 30 yards broadside.........the only problem was a tree blocking a perfect shot.......so i drew back thinking he might start walking, he didnt. So i tried to lean over a little bit and it opened a shot for me. I took the shot. But the way i was all bent over i wasnt anchored right and now i am just glad i made a complete miss........ this is the brute, he may look small to all yall but im talkin blacktails, and me bein 14 im sure it woulda made a record.
