I took a little video of what an arrow sounds like with feathers flying at you and hitting the tardget.Don't seem that loud to me.
Check out the last arrow(3rd) at the end hitting the second arrow.

I think feathers get a bad rep becuase the ones I notice being loud are from the side. From the front, they aren't loud at all, imo.
Can we say another myth busted yet.

I've done the same thing years ago with 3" vanes...same sound. I video'd the shot coming at you at 20, 30 and 40 yards as well as halfway as the arrow whizzed past the camera.
That led me to believe that the deer hear the arrow more than they do the bow at times and why I'd sooner have a 40 yard shot than I would a 20 yard shot at times on nervous deer...seriously.

No, you're right; the only time I can hear mine getting louder than normal is when I've put a LOT of shots on them and the edges are starting to get frayed up a bunch. Refletch 'em, and I'm good as new!

Rob, didn't see your post until after I'd posted that before.
You're exactly right; Chuck Adams wrote about that very phenomenon a few years ago: He'd rarely if ever had a deer "jump the string" at 40, but it would happen quite frequently (or at least the attempt to was happening) at 20-25.
