Lake Rathburn is very good. Lots of public hunting available. Anywhere along any of the big lakes hold a good supply of deer. I have some friends who hunt Lake Rathburn every year and do very well.

My post was only for Fremont and Page counties. There is some good hunting in the Loess Hills in Mills County also. When you go further east and central there is alot more area. There is an area called riverton in fremont county that is mostly for fishing but they allow hunting. It gets little pressure and has some mighty nice bucks on it.

Iowa non-resident is very expensive. Not sure how the tag drawing works. There is also good pheasent hunting in most of the areas that have been discussed here.

I live in Union county in southern Iowa. I own 80 acres here just north of Hwy 34 on your map. There are PLENTY of deer here. I agree with TWACK and SHAGGY (wassup guys!). You can usually find landowners who will let you hunt on their property for free. Most farmers don't like the deer because they eat up the corn and soybeans. As far as public land to hunt, look for the little county owned areas. They don't get near the pressure that the big public grounds get. There is one such place about 4 miles from me. I swear no body even knows it's there! It's about 100 acres or so with a 8 or 10 acre pond on it. The rest is nothing but oak timber. I'm going to hunt it next year. As far as getting a deer tag, GOOD LUCK! They are exspensive and hard to get. This year they were over $300.00. Here's the Iowa DNR website.

http://www.state.ia.us/government/dnr/

They should be able to help you get the tag. If you do get drawn. Post back on here or email me. I'll help you find some ground to hunt.

KEEP IT LEGAL. KEEP IT SAFE. OR WE MAY NOT GET TO KEEP IT AT ALL.
