Every deer I've taken with a bow has been without a rangefinder. Thats from 7-35 yards. Never thought I needed one but I've been thinking about getting one lately. It would be nice to have one to "shoot" yardages on trees and landmarks around your stand before the big boy comes strolling by. Something else to carry and keep up with but it would be one valuable tool.

Once in the tree I use mine to range different trees so that I already know the range (25 yds and in)when the deer show up. It would come in real handy if I were to shoot a deer, wound itand it would run a little ways off and stop. Then I would range it and, if in my second shot range, give it another arrow.

You can also use them to check your ranging ability. Guess the range to an object and then range it with the RF. That will help increase your ability and ranging animals without it say, if you were still hunting.

FYI

If you hunt out of a blind

I believe the Nikon (440) is the only

one that is accuratate thru the screen.(maybe all the Nikons do ?)

I never had any use for a range finder till I started traveling to hunt.

I grew up hunting 90lb deer.

First Ohio #250 buck showed up I was off by over 10 yds.

First Tx little deer w/Ohio horns in the cactus was tough.

Now I take the Nikon and range 4-5 things from any stand I am hunting from.

It literaly only takes a minute and saves a bunch of grief.

That little Nikon has been on hundreds of hunts and when you average the costper hunt it is cheap insurance.

I'm paying a bit more but I just ordered my Leupold RX-II. I really like the angle adjusting it does. As a gun hunter I never needed one. Bows are an entire new subject. Now I bought one.

I love the size, weight and feel of the Nikon 440. My only thing in looking through it is
I wish it came in a lower magnification. 8x is on the high end. Most of the Bushnells are 5-7X.
Maybe it is just my personal taste, but is there a reason they use 8x or I should?

I don't know but I suspect the reason it is 8x is so that you can use it as a viewing device (monocular) also. Since it ranges out to 400 yds you can get a better look at what you may shoot while you are getting distance. If there was a rangefinder just for bowhunters it would probably be 2x and only range out to 75 yards maybe. But that is probably not worth it to make for anyone.

I have a Nikon 440 and love it. Ranges very well out to 400+ yards, which covers me for rifle season as well…

Had initially bought a Bushnel (don’t remember the actual model) but I had some issues with it. Would give me varying yardage values scanning the same object multiple time, if I could get a reading at all – plus it was bulkier… I suppose I just got a lemon…
