what range finder????
i'm going to buy a range finderso what range finder tells the best yardage and it is under $250also tell me how far it goes, and how much it cost.
thanks!!! |
RE: what range finder????
Bushnell yardage pro is +/- $150. I bought one about 6 years ago.....and it's worked just fine. It won't range through my matrix blind netting (so I hear).....but I don't hunt with the netting down, anyways (only hunt birds out of the blind).
You can spend more, for sure......what you get (if you're strictlya whitetail hunter)......I have no clue. |
RE: what range finder????
Bushnell, Nikon or Leupold. Find one of those that meets your price and has the options you want andget it. They all will give you the correct range and have good optics. It is the options that separate them. Decide which options are important and meet your price requirements and buy one.

RE: what range finder????
How crucial do you think a range finder is? I have been debating rather to get one or not, but I want to make sure it is worth it.
|
RE: what range finder????
Just another toy I can probably do without. I like it when I practice, especially when sighting in, so I don't have to pace off ranges. We'll see how it works in the woods in a couple months.

RE: what range finder????
ORIGINAL: robbcayman Good Point, I just thought I might eventually regret owning it when I could have bought something else I would have put to more use. I mean every time before you shoot a deer, do you use the range finder? It may be worth getting If I could use it enough to justify it. You can also use them to check your ranging ability. Guess the range to an object and then range it with the RF. That will help increase your ability and ranging animals without it say, if you were still hunting. |
RE: what range finder????
FYI
If you hunt out of a blind I believe the Nikon (440) is the only one that is accuratate thru the screen.(maybe all the Nikons do ?) I never had any use for a range finder till I started traveling to hunt. I grew up hunting 90lb deer. First Ohio #250 buck showed up I was off by over 10 yds. First Tx little deer w/Ohio horns in the cactus was tough. Now I take the Nikon and range 4-5 things from any stand I am hunting from. It literaly only takes a minute and saves a bunch of grief. That little Nikon has been on hundreds of hunts and when you average the costper hunt it is cheap insurance. IMHO |
RE: what range finder????
I'm paying a bit more but I just ordered my Leupold RX-II. I really like the angle adjusting it does. As a gun hunter I never needed one. Bows are an entire new subject. Now I bought one.

RE: what range finder????
I love the size, weight and feel of the Nikon 440. My only thing in looking through it is
I wish it came in a lower magnification. 8x is on the high end. Most of the Bushnells are 5-7X. Maybe it is just my personal taste, but is there a reason they use 8x or I should? |
RE: what range finder????
I don't know but I suspect the reason it is 8x is so that you can use it as a viewing device (monocular) also. Since it ranges out to 400 yds you can get a better look at what you may shoot while you are getting distance. If there was a rangefinder just for bowhunters it would probably be 2x and only range out to 75 yards maybe. But that is probably not worth it to make for anyone.

Luepold RX-II

RE: what range finder????
has anyone heard of the bushnell sport 450 lazer range finder it's $149.00

RE: what range finder????
I have a Nikon 440 and love it. Ranges very well out to 400+ yards, which covers me for rifle season as well…
Had initially bought a Bushnel (don’t remember the actual model) but I had some issues with it. Would give me varying yardage values scanning the same object multiple time, if I could get a reading at all – plus it was bulkier… I suppose I just got a lemon… |
RE: what range finder????
I love my Nikon. The guy at Cabelas where I bought said the Nikon was just as good as the top of the line range finders when ranging within 100 yards. He said at 200 yards plus you need to step it up. He mentioned that the Bushnell would sometimes give you different measurements when ranging the same objects. Now I know there are some Bushnell folks on thsi board and I'm not dogging the company. Hell, I use a bushnell scope on my Savage. But when it comes to accuracy I'd spend a few extra bucks and get that Nikon in cammo.

RE: what range finder????
I'm using the Nikon 440 as well and haven't had any complaints so far.
I haven't even attempted to range anything past 80 yards, as thats the farthest I practice. I used it this last turkey season in my Matrix and it ranged through the netting perfectly. I think I paid $200 for mine, but I purchased it last fall and can't remember for sure. As with any kind of glass, you get what you pay for. The 440 works perfectly for what I use it for, I don't need to range 1,000+ yards, and if it fogs up in fowl weather, no problem; I range my stands prior to hunting. |
RE: what range finder????
I picked up the RX-2 a few weeks ago and I'm pretty happy with it. I put off getting one for a while now, but I plan on using it to range trees and shooting spots from my stand, as well as hone my yard estimation skills.

RE: what range finder????
I have the Nikon Laser 800. I've never used it bow hunting yet, but it sure helps just setting up your targets and sighting in your bow. The reasonI got the 800 was for rifle hunting, but it has been great getting ready for bow season. I'm a Nikon fan, I have 2 Nikon Scopes, 1 set of binos, and my range finder. Nikon has been a good bang for the buck for me!
