I regretfully didn't take a lot of time in the "autopsy" stage. I had to get him field dressed, quickly, to get some help caping him out. I don't know. He only went 40 yds at most, though.

Are you guys talking optimum entry point vs aiming point? When I see that green dot, I see agood entry point for an arrow shot out of a tree...but if I aimed at that spot from any steep downward angle at all, I feel like I'd hit way high.

I aim 1/3 up from the bottom of the deer, tucked in tight behind the front leg, and try to make it so the arrow exits the opposite side tucked in nice and tight behind the leg. always try to hit the heart, the lungs come easy then.

if it only went forty yards i guess it really doesnt matter if it was a lung or heart!

looks like a dang nice shot!

Aim small miss small!

I dont mean to sound like a prick here but i aim for the whole general area i have painted green! My ideal shot would be be the yellow dot, that is if i was standing broadside on the ground with the deer!
I honestly believe you cannot pick one single spot on a deer to shoot for everytime because 9 times out of 10 the deer will be standing at a different angle, you will be at a different level with the deer,etc....! But that is just my opinion!

And you mean what by that?? I am just saying that is the KILL zone any arrow in that region is a dead deer! We as bowhunters know of what angles too shoot into a deer it comes natural with years of practice and experience.... ya know what i mean?

I always aim for the heart/lung area, I was happy with this one last season.

thanx guys...

seemed to clear up ALL doubt of my deer ducking last season. i KNOW i seen it...but now i am certain thats what happened. i aimed maybe a tad forward of where rybos dot is...same elevation...i was probably 20 foot high...i know the shot was true...i thought that WAS the idea shot.

tfox..thats the cutaway that got me thinking...think for now on im going to follow the leg up a couple inches into the body and let er rip...right about where jmbucks dot is...

westernMd...i know what you mean...thats the killzone..different angles require some thought and putting that arrow through everything you want to slice up...but ive noticed on the 3D range...you gotta pick a spot..atleast i do..one weekend i put the pins where i wanted to hit and didnt focus on the spot..the next weekend i focused on a particular spot and my score went way up...

early in...was that a late season bow kill??? your my hero...thats a dang nice buck to kill period...let alone late season in PA!! gotta be late season or rifle season...late regular archery i was sweating...no snow in sight lol

thanx everyone....i know differnt situations call for a different angle...but i was just looking for the general idea..broadside say 20yds away 20-25 foot high...i got the drift...

i wish my buck didnt duck....no question about it..he was smoked. i know it.

At this deer I am aiming at the red dot. The bones in the leg run roughly where the white outline is. If the deer ducks the shot I am still in the lungs, if not I have the bottom of the lungs and lots of arteries if not the heart.

Exactly my line of thinking. That shoulder can throw you off but its not exactly straight-up and down with the leg.

Why would you pick out such a large target? Again aim small miss small, juast as I said!
