RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...
I think what a bowhunter passes ("watches") shapes theminto the hunter they will become much more than what they kill. To me a good hunter or "experienced" hunter isn't necessarily someone who has taken a truckload of deer (although it doesn't hurt)but more importantly one who understands their quarry's temperament, posture, habits, and to an extent their impulses. This is learned thru experience.... How much knowledge are you shorting yourself if you put an arrow thru the first deer you see every time you have the chance?I cannot fathom how someone can say you don't learn anything by watching deer, everything I have learned was hands on..... I have saw some pretty cool stuff out of my treestand, much of what I have learned and witnessed occurred long after I would have had the opportunity to put an arrow thru the deer.... A lot of my experiencewould have been missed out onhad I shot those animals. These experiences are someofthe memories I am most fond of.....

Buck....
I don't disagree with anything you said. I simply asked a question, earlier. If the guy shooting all the deer is equally observing......passing on deer....doing all the things the "other guy" is doing.....is he not at an advantage (as far as gaining "experience") due to the fact that he's ALSO killing a lot of deer? It's just a question. All I'm asking. I dont want anyone to take this personally. |

IF YOU SHOT -game over. If you wait you may get to play a better game. But in the mean time you get to see how the game can be played and make your self a better player. I draw on alot of deer in a season, place my pin and say to myself your done. In my book I got that deer and got and getto play in another game.

RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...
There was no way I was reading 130 some posts.
Here's my thoughts on the original topic. A person who shoots 10 deer a year gains very little in experience over a guy who shoots 1 a year(but hunts the whole season) except in tracking deer and learning thier reactions to being shot. Other than that, time in the woods is the experience factor in my opinion. Not so much piles of dead deer. Now you give me a guy who's tracked and found a 100 deer, vs a guy who's done so for 5, and I want the 100 deer guy on a tough track. |
RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...
you keep saying its not about better hunter its about more experience
well....more hunting experience = better hunter.common sense. and pulling the trigger on a deer gains you NO hunting experience what so ever. it gains you experience in tracking and what happens after the shot. what happens after the shot is not hunting. hunting is the work you put in BEFORE the shot. So hunting experience comes from time afield, and work put in. not from how many deer you kill. I have friends that have killed into the double digits of deer. but here i sit, going into my third year since i killed my last buck. ive killed one doe since then just for the meat, yet i am lightyears ahead of these friends simply because i spend TIME in the field, passing, judging, practicing, learning as i wait for the right deer to come by, which this year will more than likely be one of two 3.5+ bucks i have my eyes on. but i will admit, if one of the two smaller 2.5 yo 8 points come out, im smokin one. but if both hunter a and b put in equal time, work, sightings, passings, and the ONLY difference is the number of deer killed. i say they have equal hunting experience, but hunter b definately has a leg up when it comes to tracking. |

ORIGINAL: tsoc I can't read every post because I have to get back to work. But I have read like seven pages or so. My opinion is that there are many different facets that are part of a hunters competency. Some of them are more important than others and some while initially important become on automatic pilot as experience is gained.Experience is gained by doing and observing and applying those things intelligently going forward.Experience can be gained at different intervals of time by different people. Some people hunt their whole lives and never realize any degree of success because they are not using their mind to apply what they are seeing and make the right adjustments going forward. I would expect that most of us assume many things that might not ever occur to a novice hunter.Bedding area, food source, wind direction, funnels and so on.The best way to gain experience fast is to question why.Why was that animal there at that time, what were the contributing factors? Why,Why,Why.keep questioning, keep reading ,keep scouting, keep talking to folks with more experience than yourself. Time is not the element that has the most to do with experience,it is exposure to what you are trying to gain experience with, and the application of that knowledge. Once you can kill on a regular basis without undue challenge, you no longer have to kill to gain that particular experience. You have done it "enough " times you can do it when you wish to or need to. Observing/passing on deer especially bucks is a tremendous way to gain experience! See how they use an area, how they use other deer etc.Passing on bucks that don't meet your criteria help to calm you for when you have opportunity at a buck that does meet the criteria. Quantity is not the measure of a great hunter.Putting mature bucks on the ground is! |
