RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...

So we just put up a series of trail cams....WATCH the deer from our living rooms and offices....and gain "experience" without ever taking one or getting cold?

If we use multiple angles....are we even doing better than the single-cam guy? Running feed add bonus experience points?

I know this is ludicrous....but hey....we're just rambling, right????;)

We should all just put up video cameras in our woods.....and have our kids watch them from the time they're able to watch TV until they'r eof legal hunting age. Actually killing the animals is way overrated. This way....the day our kids take a step into the woods.....they'll have YEARS of experience.:D

(OK...that wasnt genuine........it was a joke)

Maybe you're not misunderstaning it, too.

I asked if taking animals gained a person more experience than watching them.

You said it doesn't. Your opinion.....and you're entitled.
(agreed)

Yeah thats kinda what I was thinking.

Not talking about webcams so you can't watch from your living room or office. If you define experience as learning about your prey, its habits and idiosyncrasies, then I guess you would gain experience if you moved the cameras around to find out about your prey's habit and idiosyncrasies ;).

If you define experience as sitting in the same stands year after year shooting the same herd year after year that you take pictures of at the same bait pile year after year then I guess you wouldn't gain any experience from learning your prey's habit and idiosyncrasies.

I'm just rambling here but perhaps you should give us your definition of experience ;)

A thought just occurred to me: Do you(anyone) learn anything from cameras you have in the woods? Do you(anyone) gain more (any?)experience than the guy (me LOL) that doesn't have any cameras in the woods?
Your reply was a good one..

Now I'll say the first part of your question was do we learn? Sure, We learn what some of the deer in our area look like. If they are bucks we learn how many points, spread etc.

Does that equate to experience? Perhaps we let that 120" 8 point walk because there is a 130" 8 with a bigger spread??
We also learn stuff unrelated to the deer hunt. What other wildlife is out there coons, turkey, etc.. We also learn about our cameras and how we shoulda spent more money on a better one..but I digress.

I guess for me it's a way to hunt when the season isn'topen. I have a pot on the fire. I'm doing some non-invasive (or less invasive) scouting.

It's like a woods ultra sound Some people want to know the sex of the baby, some wait til birth. We knew early ;)and had each of the nurseries done, when the kids came home!

I knew a girl back in high school that had experience.

We just didn't call it that back then. ;)

Haha.. do you think I meant by watching tv shows? Cause those are freking useless. They just show a deer walking up to a guy and then getting shot. But, you are right. A kid would learn more by watching deer on camera, As compared to justshooting one. Anybody can shoot a deer.

Thanks. I believe experience is something that increases your knowledge. Hands on experience certainly increases your knowledge in a much richer fashion but you can still gain experience by watching someone else do something. When you watched your father(mentor) show you how to field dress a deer do you think you gained any experience? If not, what did you gain?

What did you call the boys with experience?

Nope. Never mentioned anything about that.

You put WAY too little emphasis on just "shooting a deer". I recall the days before I took a deer.....thinking I was "passing" on deer...as I watched them go by. My buddy tells me to put one on the ground before I start asserting that I'm "passing" on deer.

Whole nuther ballgame.

WHOA hold it right there....

Perhaps the passing on deer is the hang-up. By passing, I'm talking, a legal buck (could be doe) in bow range that could be taken with normal effort.

I'm not talking about passing on the 140" buck I saw at 200 yards walk into the nasty thicket!
