beprepn,

I understand where you are coming from, and by all means go with the heavy arrow if that is what you think is best.

Hitting a twig is bad news with either arrow, and releasing an arrow on live game is no place for prayers, save those for church. Too be honest I would rather my light arrow deflect 5 ft. and totally miss than deflect only a few inches and wound the deer.

You seem more concerned about the what if's on a bad shot that what will happen with a good shot. All I am saying is develope your setup to deliver the best, most accurate shot possible within your range, at the correct target and don't worry about the what if's. They will always be what if's no matter how much ke you shoot.

Good Luck.

I'm not convinced the heavier arrow is the answer to transfering more energy. I was shooting Redline 410s, I thought happily. I tried some PSE 300s. Stiffer spine, nearly the same weight. These shoot and group much better out of my bow. For what it's worth, they penetrate deeper into my foam target with the same broadhead. I think some bows just need more spine at a similar draw weight than others. In my case, I think the stiffer arrow transfers more energy than the other, at the same weight.

PDQ, finding an arrow that flys perfectly straight to begin with is half the battle.....close dont cut it !

Lilhunter, that's why the search has taken me through so many different arrows. I won't, don't need to, shoot beyond 25 yds hunting. I never shot much beyond 35 yds. After I got the 300s, I moved back to 50. The difference in groups became very apparent from 30 yds out. After retuning to the 300s, my groups at all distances were better. As I'm sure you know, the Easton chart recommends 460s at 28" for 60#. If I remember correctly the 300s spine around .100" less. That's quite a difference, but they work much better. I agree with achieving the best possible flight. I think the best flying arrow will yield the best penetration. BTW, I tried the 200s which spine in between the 460s & 410s. But they were too light, for me. Did I say that?

Light + fast + twig = wounded deer

Heavy + slow + twig, and a prayer answered = dead deer

What if the guy shootin the light fast arrow hits a twig and prays beforehand? Doesn't God answer prayers from the "light + fast" arrow shooters?

Ahh yes! The internet experts!

Now somebody logs onto the internet and thinks they're an expert, and the same person, who I can guarantee has killed a fraction of the deer I have, is telling me what I'm doing wrong. Wow, I wish I was that smart!

6ptsika: If the number of deer killed with a bow is the critical point to credibility in this discusion, then let me offer the following:

quote:

Nowadays most archers, especially top field and target archers shoot arrows that are well matched to their bows. There is still room for improvement, however, in hunting arrows. Archers ...often make the mistake of shooting the lightest arrows which will fly correctly from the bow in the hope of flattening the arrows trajectory. However, at the average bowhunting range, the factor of trajectory is not too important. More important is obtaining maximum striking power. A heavy hunting arrow absorbs more energy from the bow than does a light one. And while it may fly a bit slower, it will hit harder and afford better penetration.

Fred Bear.

Everyone has an opinion, and Fred was entitled to his. I am not one to criticize what he thought, but what works bes for me is a 450is grain arrow. I shot a ton of arrows of different sizes through my bow to find the one that shot the bes, flew the most consistant and offered the most KE without sacrificing anything else.

BTW, Fred also was a major proponent of poison pods, but I do not agree with him on that either.
