RE: How many years to get to 20?
I think I reached the 10 mark by age 12. So that woulda been about 4 years.
Honestly I couldnt tell you how long it took me to get to 20, probably another 4 years. I do alot of management hunting locally so its not uncommon for me to kill 3 does in a 1/2 hour. |
RE: How many years to get to 20?
One season I reached 12. Of course in my county I can bag 3 nannies a day for all of archery and muzzle loader season without any special tags.
I gave most of them to a nearby "soup kitchen" for the homeless and poor, they were very appreciative. |
RE: How many years to get to 20?
OK-I have my log
9 years to get my 1st 10 @ 1 buck 1 doe per year limit. Over the next 4 years I killed 12. So that's 13 years to reach 22. |
RE: How many years to get to 20?
It took me 6 years to get 10 with a bow.
It took 10 years to get 20 with a bow. Hunted 2 states, West "By God" Virginia and my home state of Pennsylvania |

RE: How many years to get to 20?
Well in the beginning for us old timers it was a one tag deal... so it took almost 10 years. I say almost because I sneaked in a couple out of state hunts. It's only been the past15 years or so we could take multiple deer. Now depending on where you live.... 10 can be done real quick if you just try to chalk up some numbers. Take Len in Maryland for example. He's totally a meat first/ horns second. He has friends, friends with special diets etc etc that love deer meat and can't hunt. For the past 3 or 4 yearsLen typically shoots 15-20 a year with the bow. I was personnally on the dragging end of one of his forays where he decided to shoot a couple bucks and a big fat doe. That was 3 in about 25 seconds. LOL I would have had Vietnam flashbacks if I had to reload that fast.:)

RE: How many years to get to 20?
im at 10. but they are all rifle kills. only 2 buck. confident i could be over 20...if i wanted to whipe out all the doe..and take shots on bucks that i wasnt totally sure were legal etc etc...
i aint afraid to eat tag soup..i think 2 years of my 8 years i didnt take any deer....one being last year. so in 6 seasons i took 10 deer and could have taken many more. im starting to change from being a deer hunter to being a bit more selective. my doe kills now will only be bow and flintlock only. no more shooting them with the rifle. just lost the flame...antlers arent the reason i hunt...but they sure look good on the wall. thats what im after. |
RE: How many years to get to 20?
I've been hunting with a bow for 22 years, and haven't hit the 10 mark(9). In Minnesota you could only shoot one with a bow or a gun until a few years ago, so I always went for the big boys with my bow, and if I failed I filled the freezer with my gun! So8 out of the9, I've shot with my bow, were mature deer, the 9th(a doe)I shot last year in CT! Ive never shot more than 2 deer a year(5 times)and in 27 total years of deer hunting I've shot 29 deer!! I've only been skunked 3 times since I started deerhunting! When I was 12, 13, and 22!! I actually hunted the last weekend of rifle season when I was 10 and 11, but that was just following my dad around, so I don't really count those years!

RE: How many years to get to 20?
It took about 10 years for me to reach 20 with a bow--and I would say about 2-1 does to bucks. I have maintained that ratio pretty closely since then as well, with about the same average.
