Actually, even though T.R.'s time was the beginning of desperately needed land and wildlife conservation programs, I do not consider that as the beginning of our hunting heritage.

For one thing, some of my ancestors were living here and had their own hunting heritage - even hunting related religious rituals - for thousands of years before white man ever came along. Some of my white ancestors were here 200 years before T.R. and I'm sure they had their own hunting heritage. They weren't allowed to hunt the King's deer over there, so I'm sure hunting meant a great deal to them.

The conservation laws were solely to curtail market hunting - which involved a wide variety of species - to keep our wildlife from being exterminated for profit.

T.R. was a trophy hunter. He was also a philthy rich white guy. (c'mon spelling police. I dare ya. ) So maybe trophy hunting is the heritage for filthy rich white guys, but not for dirt farmers in the Midwest or lower middle class suburbanites in the Southeast. So then you have to define what regional, cultural or economic class heritage you're referring to.

When we defend hunting in the media. The big guys like Uncle Ted talk about our hunting heritage. Now on CNN I am guessing all the viewers are not hunters.

I wonder what are people thinking who do not hunt when they hear this. Then at work they hear a hunter say Trophy hunting is not part of our heritage. That is simple not a true statement. I know where you stand, we are not talking about you

It works in reverse when Trophy hunters degrade guys who just want to enjoy hunting.

It has gone to far on both ends

Thanks for the civil discussion, and sticking with it long enough for us both to understand what we were actually saying--which, it seems is pretty much the same. Many times people let their emotions get the best of them--I have never been gulity o f that though--and it regresses into an argument and insults. Aside form your spelling---you're a pretty smart guy!Civil as well!

yes I suck a spelling; a sign of intelligents I am told. As Homer says
"s-m-r-t,s-m-r-t, oops, s-m-a-r-tI am so smart"

I think it was Homer Simpson who said, "I am a fart smeller!" I won't point out that it is 'intelligence' becauseI don't want to hurt your feelings or risk your becoming less civil!

I wasn't going to insult anyone as there's no reason to, but one thing I meant to address is the difference between a guy who enjoys hunting but only gets a limited time and chooses to take what he can get and the guys just out there to get a back so they can thump thier chest. THe enjoyment of the hunt and nature means next to nothing to them, they just want to kill something and it HAS to have horns. Unfortunately there are LOTS of those guys in PA. I'm all for a guy enjoying the hunting experience and shooting what he wants, cause with that mindframe he's at least going to be open minded about not shooting young deer and enjoying the hunt even if NOTHING is killed. The guys that bug me are those who want it as fast and easy as it can be to get thier deer, while not even taking a moment to enjoy everything that hunting has to offer besides killing.

WhileI don't feel every deer killed has to be worshipped and cherished, I do feel a hunter should take some sort of pride in a deer they killed that lasts more than that night at the bar. I got my buck, but the rack goes in the garage if not the trash. "why not shoot a doe?"...because its not 'manly'.

And lastly maybe its just me but I don't understand getting upset over someone telling you what to do/shoot? FROM EITHER CAMP. I just must be way laid back, cause that seems to ruffle more feathers than I ever thought it would.

THat's all for now. No insults.
