Don't let me lose my toes!
I've been continuing to sit the stand behind the house 2-3 mornings a week before I go to work. Have seen the big boy twice, but havn't had a shot. every time, my toes get mighty cold, but since I am only out there for about 2 hours each time, it's manageable. I bought a new rifle this week, and yesterday I was in the woods at 530 (yeah, it doesn't officially get light till 7 but I wanted to be there and quiet before the sun came up.) I put a lot of stock in getting rubber boots to avoide the scent issue that leather boots can cause. I bought some "duck" stlye boots with 200 grams thinsulate. They were ok earlier in the year, but yesterday, the frost on the forest floor didn't start to thaw till about Noon and the battery operated socks just barely kept me from crying. I need some real boots. H
How much thinsulate should I look for?
Where should I look to get a good deal on them? and
what kind of features should I look for?
here in central VA, it seldom gets down to the teens, but I might take a week long trip next year to the mountains.

VIRGINIA?????? It doesn't get cold in Virginia. Scent free boots don't do squat if you have to be jumping around to stay warm. Forget the rubber ducky stuff and get some real boots with about 800 or 1000 grams of thinsulate. Get some good socks. Get the boots big enough you can throw in some toe warmers on days when it may dip to single digits. OR.... get something like boot blankets or whatever they're called. Rubber is over rated..... PERIOD.

You can do that in Arkansas. Up north the "Lots of water" turns to "Lots of ice". You don't get wet walking on top of it.<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

I saw some 800 gram Wild Cat by Rocky boots at walmart. Being walmart, I am always a little skeptical, even if it is by Rocky. Anyone else have experience with this boot? It's not a bargain if my frickin feet are freezing off.

Well I have been wearing some $35 on sale Bass pro knee high rubber boots with 1000 grams of thinsulate this year. Down below 20 degrees for all day, and my feet were fine. Not a great hiking boot, but I walk less than 1/4 mile, then sit in a ground blind or up in a tree. These boots have done fine so far, and would work well for what you are going to use them for. I typically wear one pair of normal socks and then some winter socks over that if its gonna be cold.
There are better boots for walking, and snow, but for what you want, I think 1000 grams of thinsulate, even in those rubber boots, will work fine.
