RE: deer driving
Lonewolf...I don't think a lot of people misunderstood you. In fact it seems to me that most of us caught on just fine with only a few references to driving during archery. I know my response on page 1 was directed at rifle hunting. It seems to me as though you just wanted to put down a piece of hunting heritage that has been around before you were nothing more than a glimmer in your daddy's eye. Now that people don't agree with you you're getting all bent out of shape.;) If you don't like deer driving then fine but don't hold yourself up on a pedestal and tell those of us that do it that it's not sporting. Why is it there's always someone dividing hunters into groups as if some groups are better than others. Last time I checked we all shared the same passion, determination and love for this SPORT no matter how we all participated.

RE: deer driving
No bear, this has nothing to do with thinking im a better hunter then anyone else, im sorry so many ppl on here think this way because i feel just the opposite. As a matter of fact I am one of the little guys and im not ashamed to admit that. The thing I would be ashamed about would be to take a deer and call it a sport unless it was for managment or if it was my only way to get food. Y CANT A GUY HAVE A OPINION ABOUT SOMETHING WITH OUT PPL GETTING ALL BENT OUT OF SHAPE . I wouldnt have posted this if I knew ppl were gonna act this way.

RE: deer driving
Well then stop posting and rationalizing your position with the 10 follow-up posts.
![]() You said your piece and others did the same. I still think you don't know the first thing about drives except what you've heard, read, or seen on tv. I think that is the general gripe. I don't know anything about tracking deer in the snow, so you won't find me posting on that. |
RE: deer driving
I absolutely do not like deer drives for bowhunting purposes. I have watched too many oldWensel videos of flinging arrows at speeding deer. NOW dont get me wrong, I like those guys and realize this wasamethod to get deer in frontof them but Idont care for that type of whitetail bowhunting. Itstoo easy to wound a speeding deer no matter how great ofa shot one thinks they are..
Deer drives are used here a lot by gun hunters here. I'd rather hunt a critter on his own terms and not run him out of the country.. |
RE: deer driving
last time i checked its still legal to pass ur opinion, just wish ppl would understand before the bite.

Shed mantioned that he doesn't like deer drives and would rather hunt deer in other manners. This is great and his personal preference. What he didn't do is belittle the act of driving deer or try and segregate those hunters that do it while calling it non-sporting. Good post shed.;) |
RE: deer driving
Come to Pennsylvania during rifle season some time and try finding some private property to hunt. Most of the private property that people allow hunters on will have many more hunters on it. After the first morning of season the deer just don't move on their own. Why? Well, they had over a million hunters in the woods for that first day across the state, the deer pick up on that pretty quick.
Lonewolf, what type of rifle hunting do you after the first day of season? Do you sit in a stand and just hope and pray that something will come by? If thats the case, chances are those deer that are comming past you are on their feet because of a deer drive. As far as how "sporting" it is, you are looking at things in way to simple of a scheme. You simply believe that guys surround the woods, drive through and all the deer run right out to a guy waiting to shoot them. This can't be further from the truth. No matter how much time we spend in the woods we will never have the knowledge of the terrain that the deer do. I have been on alot of drives since I started hunting and it takes more knowledge of the deers habits and the land than setting up a good archery stand. First off, a good deer drive starts off with playing the wind. Usually the drivers will go in upwind and VERY slowly move through the woods towards the posters. Next you have to figure out exactly where the deer are, and in woods around here that could be anywhere as they are all thick undergrowth mixed with crab apple trees, green briars, and blowdowns. Now the fun begins, you have to figure out a way to bump them up and get them moving in the direction that you want without having them run for the hills. Try playing mind games with a deer once and you tell me how easy it is to outsmart one. We usually just let our smell and the sound of us walking bump the deer as it keeps them from moving too fast. Now, that deer has infinit escape routes and you gotta hope that he takes one past a poster, and even then it isn't a gimmie, that deer has to be moving slow enough to identify as a legal deer and to make a safe and ethical shot. Simply put, it isn't a gimmie as you are trying to portray it. Later on I will take my digital camera out on my quad ride and get some pictures of my property and I will post them. I want you to tell me how to hunt this property without doing a deer drive. |
RE: deer driving
its against the law to hunt with a rifle here in indiana, and yes pll around here do surround the area they are driving , no ecsape route . but I do understand were u r coming from. its ok for managment around here but not for sport. they use shotguns around here

RE: deer driving
Drives can and are effectively used for bowhunting. In fact, if it wasn't for driving deer I may never have found the love that I have for bowhunting. That is how I cut my teeth in the sport many years ago. That is how I learned about bedding areas, escape trails, primary rub lines, scrape lines, and how topography affects movement. We killed a lot of deer doing drives with bows, so it is effective if done properly. I currently do not employ this tactic with a bow, but I'm thankful for it and what I've learned from it.
As far as it not being sporting, that is just a matter of opinion. In my experience even if there was an island of cover that held deer and it was surrounded on all sides and driven, I would being willing to bet lots of money that some of the deer in that cover would escape. I think you are giving us hunters more credit than we deserve.;) |

RE: deer driving
We used to do a couple of gun deer drives every year. Our group has shrunk and we don't have enough guys to do it properly. We had alot of success doing them.
