Well there are stipulations. Was the fox shot on his owned property?
If so most states do not require a license to shoot small game and small game can be hunted year round on private land as long its doen but the owner or anyone that resides on the property, such as family members.

GMMAT,
That's a tough spot to be put in. I supposed I'd do the same thing if I were in your position, but I don't think I'd appreciate being put in the position in the first place.

Jeff, good for you for trying to set the kid straight. Unfortunately, if it doesn't take he will just continue the action and just won't tell you about it. Good luck in approaching your talk with him and his dad. That will be a touchy and sensitive situation.
As far as getting it mounted, I would ask the boy why he would want to mount a poached animal. Also, as others have said a taxidermist will be able to tell that the fox is out of its winter coat and may drop the dime on him anyway. I guess I just don't understand why someone would want to mount and remember something they killed illegally.

I think it is a shame. Fox live almost entirely on bugs and small rodents, not rabbits and turkeys. Rabbits and turkeys biggest predators are hawks and owls. Not that a fox wouldn't eat a rabbit, but it is far from a major part of their diet. Rabbits are pretty hard for a fox to catch you know.
The kits around here are probably near old enough to take care of themselves. A few weeks ago we had one that the dogs had cornered in the barn. He looked to be 6-8 weeks old already. He suffered a flesh wound from them, but hopefully he made it. Fox is an animal I just really like. I think they are beautiful and fairly harmless when it comes to killing animals that I would rather see/hunt.
