The kid wasn't trading crack to little Suzie for hummers.
But using your speeding analogy as you did, that wouldn't matter either.

I'm sure the Father knows how the son screwed up big time! If it were me I would let the Father have the talk with his son. Sure your are mad but this is more of a Father/Son situation than anything! I think the kid would get more out of it hearing how he screwed up coming from his Dad! JMO!
His father is the one who allowed a 14 yr old access to a 30-30 rifle to shoot at a game animal on a Sunday that NEITHER one had a clue whether there was a season in for that animal, or not. EVERY situation is different. I know these people REALLY well....and I'll have a separate conversation with dad. MY son's over there, sometimes. If a 14 yr old has carte blanche access to those type firearms.....I need to know it.

I've hunted with this young man before.....and he's been at my house shooting bows. I'll have my own talk with him.....and I'll let dad know that, too. THAT will be fine.

If thats the case I wouldn't let my kid go anywhere near that guys place!!!!!!! Friend or no friend! I don't think poaching is the issue, more of a danger/safety issue! I would talk to the guy about the safety first and THEN the poaching! Sounds like an accident waiting to happen, and I would let my kid be put in that situation!!!! Thats my responsibility as a Father!

Jeff, I understand your position. But bear in mind that this young fella, has a Dad. Now if you are his outdoor mentor, you deserve to point out his mistakes from a law and personal stand-point. But remember we ourselves have a post pro-claiming the dumb things that we have done. Most of them we learned a valued lesson and grew better because of. So talk to them both (Son and Dad) prefferably together, let them see the error and then end on a positive and forget it.

My 2 cents.

I also have to agree that he shouldn't have done it but it isn't the end of the world. If you talk down he will continue on his way just not letting you know. If you educate him and he is capable of learning you will change his perception.

I also agree that the speeding example does hold water. I would say more so. You speed you increase the likely hood of hurting others. You kill fox's you are affecting animal populations but you have unlikely but humans at risk. I think it is a very valid comparison. Don't cast stones. Everyone makes bad decisions. Notice I didn't say mistakes. Mistakes are spilling milk not shooting at things.

If a 14 year old has access to a 30-30 at any time, I would call that a potential safety issue and wouldn't let my kid over there. That is a tough call though because folks who live in rural areas usually live with a lot of guns.

You've never met a farmer that had chickens, sheep, calves, etc that didn't want coyotes/foxes killed? We have farmers that ask us to shoot coyotes here. Foxes are kinda rare here, but I don't think they would have a problem with us shooting them...in season of course.:D
You think a fox is going to kill a calf? The only things that kill the chickens around here are racoons. A couple of my neighbors hate racoons because they kill the chickens, but no, not one farmer has ever complained to me about a fox or coyote. Now sheep ranchers that I know HATE coyotes, but never heard them complain about a fox. Do I know EVERY farmer and/or rancher? No, I don't. Would anyoneof the farmers around here cared if I killed one? No, they wouldn't one way or the other. Just my experiences. That is all.

I don't think a fox is going to kill a calf. I didn't say that....I was talking about yotes. I agree, the days of people having lots of chickens/ducks running around the farm are pretty much over. Different regions play into as well, I'm sure. Most farmers here want the vermin killed, complain about crop loss to deer, but are hesitant to let people kill them. Go figure[&:]

I think that coyotes are one of the most vicious animals on the planet. No kidding.

Yes, the change in the average farmer's attitude over the last 5-10 years has been amazing. It used to be anyone could hunt now they don't let anyone. Like you say, go figure.

Grab his dad by the throat and *itch slap him six times back and forth, 3 on each side of his criminal raising face. When the fox killer comes to his rescue 4 kicks in the sac with steel toed work boots ought to handle the situation. Or-----you could just keep your snout in your own business.

Now that is an approach I haven't read before in this post.[:-]

It is disappointing to me to read how many people on here think that it isacceptable to poach animals and that it is not the business ofhunters to police our own.

Agree 100%. I don't care if your a farmer, priest, celeb, or joe blow.....there isn't anything right about poaching animals. It is beyond me how people can feel good doing it.

Decisions are always harder when they involve friends. There even harder when they involve friend's kids. I wouldn't even start to question GMMAT on any decision he makes on handiling this.

On the other hand we should all be vigilant against poachers. No matter how ethical we truly are, we will be judged by some, on the actions of poachers and unethical hunters.

This post is obviously not about GMMAT feeling good about poaching. I don't think anyone is condoning a lax attitude to poaching here. But you have to consider the circumstances one is faced with (the what, when, where, why) and the appropriate, proportional response.

This reminds me of zero tolerance policies at schools. Since no one has the gumption any more to make decisions about morality, they just institute zero tolerance policies. So the young boy who forgets his boy scout pen knife in his backpack gets expelled for weapons, or the young boy who innocently pecks a girl on the cheek gets expelled for sexual harrassment.

Without a doubt. I know GMMAT doesn't support poaching.....I was just stating in general, how can anyone feel good about it.
