I have a question I went out mushroom hunting and found 5 but 3 of them are darker brown in color and getting pretty firm/hard. Are they dying and are they any good to eat or should i just pitch those 3 thanks JOE.

We won't delete it... but you may want to try asking in the "off-season" forum, too. I'd be willing to bet you'd get quicker and more answers there...

They sound like they are pretty much dried up. They'll be OK to cook,... IF you can keep them from crumbling to pieces. MMmmmm, you just gotta love Morels! Had a huge plate full last week with turkey breats,.... MAN, that was a meal!

Back in 98' we had the forest fires here in the kootenai national forest come from within 1/2 mile behind my property and the next year morels were all over. The year after a burn is always good for morels. The wife and I were making appx. $200.00 a day each selling them until the migrate workers came in and drove the cost down so cheap we just held out and dried them and have them anytime we want.
Revene/coulee bottoms are good but you know a fresh morel from that of a dried out ones are easy to identify by the drieness in it and looking carefully mites can be found upon close inspection. A day or two after a rain and a burn from last year is the best time around here for finding morels. They are the first mushrooms to surface that show thereselves in early spring.
Also for every equal their is an oppposite in mushrooms so beware of the false morel. If you don't know the difference between a fresh morel and one that is not, you have to question your judgement, is this a safe morel, or not? When in doubt, NOT!!!
