Blonde Squirrel (pic finally)

Finally I was able to get a picture of the blonde squirrel that hangs around the house. I was torn back in late small game season to shoot this squirrel or not and mount it. I enjoy watching for it as much as I would looking at the mount. I know it won't be around forever but I'm hoping it's around til this fall season and then I'll attemp to take it with my bow. I believe it to be a female as she's smaller than the others. I first saw her around Christmas.

I dunno Rob, I wouldn't shoot it. You know the legend and curse of shooting an albino deer? Heck, as long as no one hunts close by, I'd let her be. You never know, she might have a couple babies that look like her some day.

Wonder if hanging out by the septic lid had anything to do with loss of pigmentation? :D

Hey a new guy that I recognize. Neat squirrel. Is it an albino or just a blonde? Hard to tell if the eyes are pink in the pics.

hey Rob,

I remember chatting with you over in the taxidermy forum. You had mention that there was a blonde squirrel hanging around. I like the pics, it would make a nice mount. What type of tipwill you use on your arrow when/if you try to take him? Didn't know how much damage a broadhead would do to the fur?Keep us posted on your desision!
thanks for sharing!

Very Very Cool.. I would have a tough time not popping that one with the pellet gun in the back yard if it was at my house.. lol
But if you'd like leave it alone then more power to you.. Would make a very cool mount though..

Thanks for sharing.

Awesome pics, my friend.

I went out bowhunting a squirrel (yes, I was specifically driving 30 miles several times just to chase after "A" squirrel)... it was a red fox squirrel with black sides and a snow-white back... coolest-looking mutation I'd ever seen.

I wondered then, and still do: would a field point hole be reparable? I'm not sure a blunt would deliver a killing blow, and wouldn't want to wound it so that it could crawl up into a tree and suffer...

Good luck to you in whatever you decide.

I think a field point hole would beno problemto repair. But you better stick that squirrel to something. If you get a pass thru he might run in a hole in a tree and die. Then you would have to cut down the tree.:D

Awesome looking critter. As much asI like dead squirrels better than live ones, I think I'd have to trap this guy. You'll ruin the hide if you shoot it(maybe not with a field point). Anyway, trap it, put it in a big cage, and feed it for awhile. Maybe the little bastard will go domestic(that would be win/win). If plan A starts going south................KILL IT........NOTE----Blunt force trauma to the head won't cause any noticeable hide damage. [:@][:@][:@]

Our town (Blissfield MI) is filled with Black squirrels, and some are pretty darn big. As a matter of a fact a few weeks ago 2,000 people were out of power for about 6 hours because one shorted out a transformer or something (that one was black for sure I bet;)).

If I get a chance I will see if I can picture of one. They look pretty cool actually.

I have a grey one running the trailer park I live in as well.

Thanks guys, Paul, I've seen many black squirrels in my life, this is the first and only blonde I've ever seen, other than a few mounts that were shared with me when I first posted this in January in the Taxi forum.

It's definately a blonde and not albino. I'll watch her til fall season and then decide. ;)

I've never heard of, let alone seen, a blonde squirrel before. Very cool pics, thanks for sharing. I admire your wanting to take her with a bow, but for such a unique trophy I'd want to be sure. A .22 would be a good bet if it is possible in your area and would be easy to repair for the mount.

Good luck.

I can assure you a blunt would do the job nicely. I have killed dozens of squirrels with arrows that had everything from field points to broadheads to blunts and honestly the blunts kill them faster than field points. I believe this is because they transfer more energy to the animal than a field point. Most of the time when I shoot one with a field point they are pinned to the ground but thrash around for quite a while.

Nice Pic. I have a couple of albino squirrels that have been around the house for a number of years. (pure albino, red eyes and all) Have to find the pics. Took them about 3 years ago. That would be a sweet mount!!

That would be too murderous, barbaric, and unethical. Squirrels (especially blond ones) must be killed in a decent, respectful, and ethical way, like his distant neighbor..............Odocoileus Viginianus...The wary whitetailed deer.
