RE: Are your hunting buddies serious?
My hunting buddy(Mo bowhnter) and my dad (kfish2258) are pretty serious about hunting. We mainly hunt public land so we cant do all the scouting and making food plots like you can on private land, but we do our best to find where the deer our at. Last year we starting using a GPS to mark scrap lines and other sources of sign that could lead to a potential new spot. This coming season i want to do a lot more of this. We do hang our own stands at spots that our known to have deer, but we arent what you call over achivers is what i guess i'm saying. We just do what typical hunters do. So far it seems to be working.

RE: Are your hunting buddies serious?
I have one whois really serious about it. He is a full time Taxidermist, who mounts between 250-300 whitetail a year. He does a good amount of scouting and loves any type of huting or fishing. He only bow hunts for deer as he has to be in the shop for gun season. But he bowhunts more days a season than anyone I know. Either morning or evening or both. He has a fair amount of P&Y bucks to his credit too. When I hunt over in IL I will hunt in the morning then go to his house and compare notes as to what he has been seeing during the week. Plus do a good amount of drooling over the antlers other customers have brought in. Then I head back out for the afternoon hunt.
The rest of the people that I know who bow hunt may get out a few times a year, mostly to scout for gun season. Maybe to get in on the rut but they don't put in much effort or time. One guy I know has been bow hunting for 4 years and hasn't taken a shot atone yet. He is waiting for a nice buck. I keep telling him he should kill a few first to see how he handles drawing and going thru the shot process. I have askeed him to go to a couple of 3D shoots, but he always has some kind excuse. He may luck into one sooner or later but I don't know if he will be able to make the shot. |
RE: Are your hunting buddies serious?
I have friends who hunt, but they are not hunters.
I pretty much run solo in the woods, whether it is for elk, deer, or turkey. I prefer it that way. |
RE: Are your hunting buddies serious?
From what I’ve seen, we tend to think that those who put in less time are lazy slackers, and those who put in more time have an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Ultimately leaving us as very well balanced, at least in our own minds.
What really gets under my skin is when your hunting buddy is late, or doesn’t show at all. I have one friend like this and it used to really bother me, but I found a different way to handle it. Now when he says, “what time do you want to meet”? I respond “I’m going into the woods around 5:30, and I hope to see you there”. At 5:30 I’m off and going, no waiting around. There is no point in being angry with him, he’s a really good friend. His kids are friends with my kids and other than punctuality when hunting; I have no problems with him. But we place a different priority on hunting. I feel like he doesn’t take it serious enough, and he probably thinks I’m taking it too seriously. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle as they say. |
RE: Are your hunting buddies serious?
The guy I hunt with takes it much more serious than I do, and he puts in much more time than I do. Probably why he kills more deer than I do;). Quite basically he lives to hunt, period. Everything he does revolves around hunting of some sort. When you talk to him, one of two things will be discussed, women or deer, that is just how he is.
He doesn't spend his time on the internet (he doesn't even have it[:o]), or in bars or sitting in front of the tv. He does however have a few nice mounts in his apartment, deer, turkey and several fish. His time gets divided between work, his young boy and hunting. He even picked hunting over his wife, ex-wife now. He does take time for his son though. I am much more into the technical aspect of weapons like guns and archery. He knows enough to know what works and to be proficient with them. I won't argue with his logic, because I have never seen him wound an animal with a bow or a gun. He hunts every season as well, bow shotgun and muzzle loader, then turkey hunts in the fall. He doesn't small game hunt very much though. He is a pretty decent fisherman as well. I tend to like to shoot more than hunt, that is who I am and he is ok with it as well. If I had to pick between a nice hunting spot or a good range with shotgun, rifle and an indoor archery range I would pick the shooting over hunting. Paul |

I don't have any Archery hunting buddies.. I mean I hunt with Dad and a few Uncles on some trips to the cabin but they are not serious Bow-hunters.
My one best huntin Buddy who was serious and did part-take in scouting, and all, moved to Wisconsin a couple years back.. A good hunting buddy is a tough void to fill |

RE: Are your hunting buddies serious?
I don't have any friends that hunt. It is a sport that I took up on my own a bit over a year ago. All my knowledge comes from you on the boards, tv, magazines or talking to people.
