I was wondering if you have ever been to Kodiak ISLAND to hunt Sitka Blacktail.If so how much is air fare and the cost of it.Any info you could give me would be great beacause I'm looking to go on this hunt in a couple of years.I watched Bob Fromme video and he used a guy named Jack King I believe was his name and stayed on a boat.

Q2, I have a couple of buddies that are doing the rent a boat and hunt blacktails on Kodiak right now. The limit for that boat was 6 people, and the weekly rental rate is $15,000. I think that is with a captain/chef, and all meals/accomidations taken care of. 4 of them went, so it cost 3,750 each just for the boat. That is probably the most expensive way to go about it.

Airfare to Kodiak is fairly expensive due to its remoteness. I would expect to pay about $200-$300 round trip from Anchorage, so you could probably add that on from your airfare to Anchorage from where you are leaving from and be in the right ballpark. I think Alaska Airlines is the only airline that services Kodiak, so you might be limited by booking with one of their affiliates like American or NorthWest to Alaska.

I've never been to Kodiak to hunt blacktails, so I'm not the man to ask on where to go or how to get there. I'm pretty sure they have a bunch of forest service cabins, but their availability might be pretty tight during the deer season. Best thing to do is call the Alaska Dept of Fish and Game and find out when the good times are, and what is available on the island as far as cabins and access.

I'm hoping to do a sitka blacktail hunt in the near future in South East Alaska, probably around the Juneau area. It's not real high on my priority list for hunting though.

I know there is better information out there for you, and the numbers I gave you for the boat deal are the high of the high end. I wouldn't doubt that you could do the hunt, airfare, tags, and misc. expenses for around $2000-$2500 depending on where you fly in from, boat rental, cabin rental or other possible accomidations. You can find Alaska Dept of Fish and Games websight by typing that in on google. I'll try and find some links later this week when I have some more time to do so.

Wish I could help you more, but the northern part of Alaska is where I do most of my hunting, not the southern part.

Thanx., for the info..When I was younger I always remembered reading about Chuck Adams hunting them on Kodiak and I've been wanting to go since then.By the way a guy i know just gave two hams off of a Caribou and i was wondering if you cook it like deer meat or not and how does it fare as far as other Big Game.

It depends on when the caribou was taken, we were just discussing this over on the big game forum. You would cook it just like any other meat though, and it is one of the best wild game meats out there if it is taken care of in the field, and if it was not a rut shot bull.
