What if the Indians had the archery equipment we have these days? I think we all would be sitting around smoking pipes these days. They were good with what they had back then.

Hey, we're STILL pretty good with them.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
Even though I use a modern compound bow to hunt, I still enjoy the feeling of shooting by instinct without sights or gizmos. It gives more freedom to snap shoot and draw quickly, at least for me.
Keep 'em all in the Bull.

I am part Cherokee Indian. My grandmother was full-blooded. My greatgrandfather used to tell me stories of their hunts in Florida for deer. They used hand made bows and hand crafted arrows. Really. But they were masters at hunting the wind. And they knew their hunting ground as well as the deer did. If they had all the modern equipment we have today, the only thing left for us to hunt would be armidillos!

Bulzeye, I often thought about going back to shooting instinctive like I started out.You never have to worry about your sight, rest, string stretching etc. shooting without all the modern gadgets these days.

Bulzeye I could not agree more. When I shoot instinctive, I feel I determined the outcome of the shot, not the bow. With all the gizmos, I tend to give more credit to the setup of the bow

If they would've had compounds they would've gotten beaten worse than what they did(no disrespect to Native Americans). The bows they had were made to shoot while on horseback, which they did very well.A sighted, high let-off compound bow would not have done them any good in battle-on their hunting grounds, yes.

JimPic is absolutely correct!
A Recurve or Longbow is much superior to a Compound in a combat situation.
You can shoot a Recurve/Longbow much faster than any compound.
It's lighter in weight, doesn't have all those accessories to get in your way and much more rugged than the compound.
How is it more rugged, you may ask ?
Slam your compound to the ground or drop it on rocks and see if it still performs.
Do the same with a Longbow and just pick it up and continue to shoot.
It will take being dropped in stride.
What about hunting from horseback ?
The let-off and string creep of a Compound, along with the weight, would make it useless for that purpose.
Sure, you can shoot a Compound instinctively and without sights or gadgets. But not nearly as fast as a Longbow or Recurve.
Sag.
