Default Anybody hunting elk with a bow out there?

I'm new to this board and would like to talk elk hunting. I live in Idaho and have hunted elk with a bow for the last 12 years. I'm obsessed to the point my wife calls me an elk nut! As she can no longer take hearing another elk story I have to come up with another outlet....anybody else with the same problem?
My favorite part of the hunt is listening to them bugle, trying to figure out what they're saying, and then doing my best to call them in. My son and I have had several successful years, but as a fanatic I'm always looking for ways to improve.
What is your best advice for getting them in that last 100 yards so that they are in bow range? Aggressive or subtle calling??

I hunt elk here in Oregon and we are lucky enough to have rooservelts and rocky mountain elk. Some of my best hunting is less than an hour away.My wife and daughters are sick of hearing me talk elk year round. I am lucky enough to work at a place that gives me 4 weeks vacation and can take it any time I want, I go after rocky mountain elk every year for at least 1 week camping in eastern Oregon. I have enough preferance points to draw a tag in N.E. Oregon where there are very few hunters but large bulls, many score in the 300 +...will draw the tag next year. Good to see another elkcoholic...Whtelk

That's cool, two kinds of elk to hunt! Have you ever hunted Idaho? I've never gone out of state for elk. Fortunately we don't have to draw for elk in Idaho, we just have to choose a weapon and a zone to hunt. I choose archery and the zone where I live and can hunt the full month of Septemper, you know the rut! Is that when you take your vacation time? How is the bugling at the time you hunt?

I'm leaving in two days for some late season archery elk hunting here in Washington. Can't wait. This is my third year so I am still learning a lot, mostly about how much work is involved to find and stalk these critters. We will be after meat on this cow-or-spike-only hunt. The big herd bulls will be safe from us...which they probably all ready are...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

The Primos brothers put out some pretty good videos on calling in elk. I just cow call a little, mostly to just help locate them. I'm not good enough to call one in yet. Afraid I will 'educate' them and make them even more spooky. Better to not call at all than to call poorly and scare them off.

Yeah I'm an elk nut too, my wife can't stand it either. This was the first year that I was able to hunt them with a bow, but I will never be the same again. It's just not the same with a rifle. My problem isn't the last 100 yards as I had about 15 within 30 yards or less but came to realize that they have a real nack for stopping right behind a bush or tree and peep around it looking for the &quot;other&quot; elk and when they didn't see it they would just turn around and walk away. I really need to find a fellow bowhunter to go with me to do the tag team thing.
