RE: WI hunters kill wolves

I'm sure there's a lot more than just 9 wolves killed every year in WI. Most of the deer hunters up there don't like them and have no use for them whatsoever. A lot of your good-ole-boy types will shoot every wolf they see and not think twice about it.

I really don't have an opinion one way or another.

Sorry but I do have an opinion and it's based on the law. It's against the law to kill wolves. No different than any other type of poaching or other violations of law. I'm sure there are many "good old boys", who consider themselves as self appointed keepers of the forest and protectors of "their" deer but in my view, it's wrong.

Strange but this is the first instance of ambivalence towards lawbreaking that I've seen in this forum. In every instance from trespassing to poaching the comments have come down hard on the lawbreakers even to the point of suggesting that sentences were too lenient. I remember well the wolf and cougar kills of the 1940's and 50's by cattlemen that had an economic interest in protecting their livelihoods. Even they now support (to varying degrees) introduction and continuance of wolf populations.

Seems to me the economic interes of the ranchers would far outweigh the recreation interests of a few WI, "sportsmen(?).

By the way, has anyone in WI compared the predation rate of dogs and coyotes vs wolves? I'mbetting that information is available in your state and it's much worse than the wolves.

I don't know where the cattlemen are that support wolves but there aren't any around here. Wolves are a growing nuisance and if you think coyotes and dogs are bigger predators, you've been seriously misinformed. Wolves haven't been in my area very long, but ask about any outdoorsman and they'll tell you the impact they've made already. It ain't just the WI hunters that are upset, as you'll find out west. We have so many predatorsnow (black bear, grizzly bear, coyote, cougar, and now wolf)that soon hunters won't be necessary. Maybe that's the plan for the future.

CONGRATULATIONS !!

From what I know, wolves and people do not intermingle well, and wolves decimate deer, elk and moose herds unless they're kept in check (and they are not in the States)

kill all of them , there's plenty of them in Canada

I am sure there are more then just 9 killed also. These are just the one they can confirm were killed by humans. Iunderstand that they found the 9 wolves and some were gutshot and some washed up on river banks. I have seen one wolf while hunting our land in northern WI but I have seen many coyotes as well. I really don't notice that much of a difference in the hunting over the last 16years. Around here people don't care for them at all.

ORIGINAL: Bulzeye

Looks like the deer was dead when they found it since the neck isn't chomped on.
I didn't mean that the wolves killed the deer. I know the shot killed the deer, but it just needed time. So we let him lay over night. And then the wolves found him.:(
Anyways, in the area I hunt I have heard alot of people complain about the wolves, but never heard of anybody shooting a wolf. But I'm not suprised to her it.

RE: WI hunters kill wolves

Many people in the northwoods do not like the numerous wolf population. Notice I said people and not only hunters! And many do not like having so many. The DNR claimed for several years that there were only 250-300 wolves in northern WI. Virtually everyone living up nort' knew that estimate was a complete joke. Now the DNR acknowledges there may be about 450. I talked to a warden this fall who jokingly said if that's all the DNR thinks there is thenall450 appear to be in his county!:D

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there legislation proposingto declassify the wolf to "threatened" making it O.K. to shoot them in specific instances in WI? This proposition was shot down by a judge in Oregon. Oregon?????

There isa code in the northwoods called the 3S. Shoot- Shovel- Shut up. Whether you agree with it or not,it does exist!
