No throat patch????
My buck I'm having mounted has a TINY throat patch. Almost non-existent.
Is this common? I JUST noticed this. Jeff ![]() |
RE: No throat patch????
red X for me
|
RE: No throat patch????
Hmm Jeff, that's a good question, I'll have to start looking more at mine through the years. I guess I'm not noticing becuase it seems common to me it should be there, in fact double throat patches are prolly more common then none...another good reason he'll make a coll mount.
|
RE: No throat patch????
yeah i've got two with double patches. Never seen one without a throat patch. That's interesting.
|
RE: No throat patch????
The doe I took this year in NY didn't really have one...........
With that said, one of my best buds shot one a while ago that had 2 throat patches. ![]() |
RE: No throat patch????
That does look crazy. I have seen few deer without a throat patch.
|
RE: No throat patch????
I don't recall ever having seen a deer without some white on the throat. Almost looks like a stag....well, except for the horns...lol. Your buck has a nice reddish tint to it and the nose looks brown. Is it really not a black nose or was there blood covering it? I'd say that would make a dandy mount. Very unusual!

RE: No throat patch????
Jackson:
Yeah. I tried to clean him up real good before the photos.....but he does still have some blood on his mouth area. I'm sorry about that. Jeff |
RE: No throat patch????
Pretty cool. I don't recall ever seeing a deer without a throat patch. I've seen many with two throat patches, in fact, I've killed at least 3 that have two.
|
RE: No throat patch????
What did you guys expect from a subruban deer, he has a hair appointment 1's aweek to get it colored[&:]
|
RE: No throat patch????
Yea its common, Sometimes deer even have a double throat patch.
|
RE: No throat patch????
It's common. A deer's color will vary from deer to deer. I have seen many deer without a throut patch.
|
RE: No throat patch????
Thats pretty cool i've never seen it before. That'll make a great mount.
|
RE: No throat patch????
My brother in law has a 12 pointer mounted whose throat patch is almost non existent. Still a nice mount but I feel it woulda looked better with somewhat of a throat patch.
|
RE: No throat patch????
That's interesting...I notice unusual things about the deer I see/skin out all the time. I mounted a buck last night that had a really blonde forehead, it was so pretty. A button buck Iskinned out this season had a lot of extra white on the nose, so I saved the cape. I shot a doe this rifle season with a really black tail....She was a normal deer but the top of her tail was almost jet black.
Deer are like people, every one is different. |
RE: No throat patch????
![]() This is the Doe i shot this year, what a hog she had a very small patch under her chin |
RE: No throat patch????
Back in 02 I shot a six point that had a red patch on his head, and my father shot a spike that had blond streaks on it's head. The neat thing was that both deer were shot out of the same blind a day apart. It goes to show that every deer is a little different.
|
RE: No throat patch????
no i dont think it is common for them almost not to have one.But there is alot of weirder things than that.
|
RE: No throat patch????
I see what u guys mean though, cause I've seen a lot of deer with different stuff going on with their coloration. Yesterday I shot a doe who had a lot of black on her chest, and one heck of a lot of black on top of her tail. I guess they're just all different.
|
RE: No throat patch????
Im going to say uncommon. I have never seen one without a throat patch in all my years in the deer woods. matter of fact i have never seen one with double patches but know people who have killed a few. By the way SB, what state are from? i have been wondering that.
Dan ps: nice looking buck |
RE: No throat patch????
I'm in NC.
I took my buck to the taxidermist, yesterday. He was really surprised to hearthat it didn't have a throat patch. Everything in his showroom had one.....and he said it was definitely unusual. After looking on a few more taxidermy sites....I have to agree. Anyways....just checking. I should get him back in 6 months. Jeff |
RE: No throat patch????
Wow, six months? That is great turn around. Is he not that busy or has many working for him? I won't see mine until Nov 07 at minimal.
|
RE: No throat patch????
That's great turn around. I dropped mine off November 16th last year. He keeps telling me 3 or 4 more weeks.
|
RE: No throat patch????
This guy comes highly recommended....and is very proud of his work. Lisa and I went to his studio, yesterday....and we were both impressed with the animals he had on displa, there (No exotics....but a GREAT representation of what we encounter around here).
He wasn't the cheapest.....and that might be why he isn't as busy as some. I'm not sure. He is a full-time taxidermist. I found that out (which I think, at elast around here, is unusual). Jeff |

ORIGINAL: SBGobblers Hell, I'd get yours done first, too! Dinks like mine know their place[&:] Jeff The "bull" will be there next year, is that what we are calling him? |
RE: No throat patch????
"The Bull" is a perfect 8-pointer that's main beams are REALLY heavy (for this area). The impressive thing about him is his size, though. For a novice like me......the only way I can describe it is he looked absolutely pre-historic when I first saw him. You have to put yourself into my place.....having NEVER seen a mature whitetail deer.....EVER. I'd seen a couple of little spikes, 4's and 6's......and a smallish 8. NEVER had I seen a whitetail deer with a big 'ol body like this guy has. When he bounded under my tree.......on BOTH occasions....I was taken aback.
That's the honest truth. He's a big 'ol Bull. Jeff |
RE: No throat patch????
Deer are all different in one way or another, just like we are. Being a Taxidermist, I have seen all kinds of hair color variations and patterns. The buck I shot this year had the white hair under his chin, butvery little white hairon his throat.

Jeff I take you will be trying to stick an arrow in the bull next season? Now that you have seen a mature buck, does it make you want to hunt them more? |
RE: No throat patch????
The turnaround for my taxi (Nature's Way Taxidermy Inc. Steger, IL.<----Shameless plug) has never been more than 4-5 months. I have been using him for well over 10 years and he has never been later than March getting a mount back to me. He does good work to.

RE: No throat patch????
I take you will be trying to stick an arrow in the bull next season? Now that you have seen a mature buck, does it make you want to hunt them more? The answer to the second question is hard to answer, Germ. You see....."I" feel like I'd have to give up something in order to pursue this deer (and others like him.....if they exist in my woods). I LOVE to hunt. I love to be out there. "I" feel like I'd have to limit how much I went into the area (the area I know he frequents) in order to put a tag on him. I think my best chance is either in the early season (he gave me that chance this year.....and I failed)....or during the rut. I'm also gonna take some does out of there, next year......and if that commotion bugs him out.....thenit's something I just have to live with. Bottom line, Gary......I can't imagine ANYONE not wanting to be around an animal like this one (he's not unique to many....but to me he is). I'd pay a lot of money to be able to spend time just watching him throughout a day. He's really fascinating. I can see why people grow weary of hunting "deer". I can understand the allure of hunting ONLY mature whitetails. I don't think I'm there......and I may never be. That doesn't mean I don't understand it. If you're lucky enough to see one of these guys up close and personal (o yds, twice this season).....you know what I mean. I was simply in awe..... Jeff |
RE: No throat patch????
Winston Salem Deer arn't allowed to grow throat patches. Just FYI.[8D]

RE: No throat patch????
Farm:
Have you ever been to Keith Bowman's (taxidermist)place in your county???? He and his son took every animal in the studio......and there's some REALLY impressive animals in there. ALL taken in and around your county. Wow. Jeff |
RE: No throat patch????
Keith is the only one I have ever had do my mounts. I have 2 bucks and a 15" black crappie my son caught.
Keith does AMAZING work. There are some nice one's in his studio. Hard to believe they came from NC, much less stokes co. When I took him the crappie, he tried to talk me into getting a repro. mount and turning it loose in his pond so he could catch it.:D I guess I shouldn't take live fish to the taxi. |
RE: No throat patch????
I'm SO glad to hear you say that. He came VERY well recommended. I thought I was in good hands.....but it never hurts to hear it from someone who's already a satisfied customer.
That lttle studio is VERY professional....and VERY beautiful. Jeff |
