Has anyone picked up a dictionary or thesaurus to see what the word means or what words can be used in it's place. According to my thesaurus sport can be replaced with activity. Is hunting an activity? Absolutly, just b/c you see football on TV and there competing doesn't mean it's the definition of sport.
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess 3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime. 9. a sportsman Anyway, ethics and values are the things that matter to me. Not, "Is hunting a sport". These two things can be used not only for hunting but in everyday life. |

But sometimes it seems that you have too much time on your hands and just post to "hear yourself talk". You can't be serious with this one. Most hunting equipment can be purchased at a SPORTING GOODS STORE. That should answer your question right there. Anybody that doesn't think hunting is a sport maybe you need to get off your quad and walk to your hunting area and drag your deer out of the woods with a rope and butcher your own deer. The way I hunt is definetly a sport. Tom |

I'm with BigJ. I played DI baseball and was a PGA Professional. We just all have differing opinions on what a SPORT is. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying....technically.....I guess it is a sport. So's my 5 yr old nephew, playing soccer. Jeff |

I'm with springcaller. According to Webster it is a sport, not a competition. Apparently some people's concept of "Sport" has been so twisted that they don't recognize the distinction. Rock climbing is a sport. There's no competition;unless you consider man vs. gravity. It's one man doing what he enjoys. Same with hunting, there's no competition unless your ego is so fragile you have to "one-up" every other hunter out there, in which case you have bigger issues than defining the word "sport".

I hear ya there dude,the obsession for big racks is kinda wierd.Yea,they look cool,and even cooler yet on a 250# buck,but ill take a small rack on a big buck any day over a big rack on a small deer.I eat my deer
ORIGINAL: gzg38b I don't know if it's a sport or not. However, I will say that I tendget annoyed when people are overly competitive about hunting. The obsession with "winning the competition" by having the biggest rack at the expense of things like ethics and fair chase bugs me (ie Jimmy Houston, high fences, etc.). AndwhenWHA tried to make hunting into a competitive spectator sport like NASCAR I was really ticked off. It bothers me when guys on TV shoot a nice buck and the first word out of their mouth is "What does he score?". Sport implies competition. But I think we should remember that the competition is between the hunter and the animal. When we start competing with each other is when the less pleasant aspects of our sport and our personalities surface. |

Good points all around. It definitely falls into the "active passtime/recreation" category to a small degree...there are a clear-cut set of "rules"...I guess the problem I have in categorizing hunting, fishing, rock climbing, etc. as sports is there is no "game". Sure, there's the game of wits between me and my prey, but somehow lowering that "game" to a simple competition when a life is on the line is cheap and under-values the spiritual side.
Gonna have to vote no on this one. |

Id say its not only a sport, but one one of the best. Its hard to cheat.

Are any of these activities sports? Woodworking, basketweaving, quilting, gardening, farming, mountan climbing, sky diving? They all take skill, some take a lot of physical effort and all could be made competetive.
