How much venison do you guys eat??
 

I got my first a few weeks ago, and have plenty of meat in the freezer. I will be able to eat it a few times a month all winter. I will still try to get one more late in Dec., but I was reading some of the other threads...where guys have taken 3, 4, 5 and even more deer already in 2006. 5 deer in the freezer would require an overdose on venison in my opinion. Do you donate, eat that much or what? Not trying to start anything...just curious...thx

My family could EASILY eat 3 a year. We grind 90% of it and don't need to buy burger most of the year.

I donated one this year to a Hunters Sharing the Harvest program. I have 2 more in the freezer with quite a few tags to fill. I don't care if I shoot another in NY but I really want to take a few more does off the property in PA, there are too many there.

Really 2 deer is enough to sustain my family until next October. We eat venison about once a week sometimes more sometimes less. Most of the venison we eat is ground burger. We use it for everything (tacos, spaghetti, sloppy joes, hamburger helper, grilled burgers, anything you can think of.)

Then we'll have the occasional swiss steak or roast. Man I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Just my wife and me take three big mature Illinois deer every year, with one of those usually a 200-lb. plus buck...

We have a lot ground too, as others have said, we use it for everything. We have already finished off 1 this fall, and the freezer is full, I plan on donating one to Share the Harvest, and other than that, Im looking to fill a buck tag, I havent filled any of my buck tags yet, and amready to fill one. I also had a lot of bratwurst and am having summer sausage made. its all good.

If we're lucky we have two deer a year in the freezer.

We pretty much stop buying beef until after we've finished off the venison.

We'll have it every night until its gone or we want something different.

I've killed 4 does this year and have 2 in the freezer, gave one away and donated one. I'll eat it a couple of times a week... it'll usually be gone around May.

I average 3 per year. My wife and I eat it all the time and I make sausage with it and share with family and friends. I have killed 2 so far and would like another one.
Everyones needs, wants, and desires are different.

Not much at all. usually keep a half for a bit of dry cure sausage but everything else goes to my neighbor. Get an elk each year and we raise beef so how much meat do ya need.[8D]

I've shot 5 so far. Kept 3 for my girlfriend and myself, gave 2 to my parents(who in turn give meat to my brother and sister) If I get any more they will be donated to HSH. Of the 3 I kept, a lot of that meat will be randomly given away to friends/coworkers. Just today I cooked up some roasts and shredded them and dumped BBQ sauce on em and took em in for the guys at work.

I make a ton of jerky and bring it with me to work for everyone else to try. I also grind up most of the meat and don't have to by ground beef for the rest of the year.

My wife won't eat it, that's fine. I take all the meat I get from my buck each year and have bologna made, I love it. It usually lasts me from one season to the next at around 75 chubs. I give it out to the landowner, guests and friends as well.

I currently have about 5 chubs left and I haven't taken this years deer to the butcher yet. MMmmmm good stuff.

If I want a steak, I throw a Porterhouse on the grill.

1 deer is not enough to last the year in my house but 2 is plenty.
Friends and family also enjoy the venison so I share the wealth whenever possible.
2 deer a year seems to be my limit anyhow.

I usually process one a year, mostly into salami and slim jims. The rest get donated to Hunters feeding the Hungry program or given to my family.

I usually shoot 3 to 4 deer a year. We butcher beef also so we have all the burger and steaks we can eat and the wife won't eat deer over beef. I just make lots of jerky and sausage when the season is over; everybody loves that stuff so it doens't last long. I've got 3 to work on from this year once the holidays are over.

It's my first season to even have this to think about!!

The first deer I took this year was 172 lbs on the hoof. I processed him completely at home....and it put some meat in my new floor freezer (I was confident enough to purchase a floor freezer before the season started). the little piebald I shot wasn't too big....so I had him ground up into burger. The doe.....I had done into sausage. The last buck I donated to a family of 14 that I know of. The butcher donated the processing fee.....and I was going to throw in a gift certificate to the meat center, too. The butcher matched my $$....and all was well.

I've given sausage to a few co-workers......ground venison to family.....and we're eating backstraps, tonight, for the third time since I took my first. We've also had tacos, spaghetti.....and I'm liking the sounds of the manwich thing. My son also used a roast to do a school home economics project....and it turned out great!

I think I'm gonna keep it at 3 in our freezer.....and see how it goes. I might keep more, next year.....or less. We'll see. I can honestly see us going through those 3 in less than 9 months.

For me, half of each deer goes to the land owner where I took it. The rest gets cut into steaks (back strap) or used for jerkey, smoked summer sausage or breakfast sausage...all home made. I could easily use 5 deer in one year, but so far only have two.

We got two this year. Here where I live we dont get the 3-4 tags drawn per person so its usually just one tag per person, but with my kids and I we got 2 out of 3 this year and I process everything myself. Burger steaks and jerky. Sometimes I will regrind some of the burger up into sausage, which is pretty good. My wife made a casaroul last night with the vinesin and it wasnt quite so good with it over burger. But most other things are great that way. I love deer burgers done up in the Gearge Foreman grill, a nice crust on each side and no fat to speak of. Very good indeed.

I shot 3 last year and used alot up on sausage and snack sticks. I give alot of the sausage away to the family around Christmas. Plus my family goes through about 6 pounds in a week. We cook up allot of roasts for eating and shredding into BBQ sandwiches. We also eat alot of steaks as well.

I believe we could consume 4 deer a year with my wife and I and out Daughter. My family is groing so I guess I will have to start shooting more deer every year.l

I try to eat some at least a couple of times a week. My buddies also hunt and don't eat it as much as I do so I go over for meals at thier places. I also entertain company and will pull out some loin for them to try on occaision.

I'm in college and the guys in my house love venison. We eat about 4 deer a year DURING SCHOOL. That's no kidding either. Generally I try to kill 4 and if we don't eat it all there will be just barely enough left for me to ration through the rest of the summer. I vacum seal all my stuff and freeze it in the deep freezer, works well for me. But yeah I actually eat that much meat along with my roommates.

My brother and I usually put 5-6 in the freezer every year and that gets our whole family through the year. I just finished eating 2 bar-b-q's from the deer that we canned this year. It don't get any better than that.

I have shot 3 this year and they are almost gone already. I hope to get 2 more in dec. That will make me till spring. My 11 and 9 yr old eat the stuff like they are starving.

I have taken 4 this season myself and my son took a doe just last weekend.
I will take 4-5 deer a season.
What I do is keep a couple of young does just for freezer meat and have about 2 or 3 most likely the bigger bucks, made into jerkey,I keep some jerky for my own family. My kids love deer jerky and its better than them just eating junk food like chips ect.. I give away alot of jerkyto my friends they love the stuff!!
If i take any more deer than that i will give it to a friend or family member that don`t hunt but really likes or needs the meat.
It always gets put to good use;)

Wow, I'm a little surprised by the answers. Growing up our family (6 people)would eat about 10deer a year. (3 or 4 people filling 3 tags a piece)But we used it for everything. I didn't have beef until I was about 16 I think. But then again we were too poor to buy beef so that could have been another reason too.

I've taken 6 as of Saturday, my dad has killed one, and my hunting partner has killed 7 so far. I keep the backstraps and inner loins. The rest I have processed into sausage and deerburger. When I get it back from the butcher I store all I can in my freezer and my dads deep freezer and with the rest. I share the wealth with friends at work, landowners, neighbors, etc. I usually cankill allI need to get me through to October and the butcher wraps it, seals it, then flash freezes it so I don't have to worry about freezer burn or spoilage.

I basically live on deer meat all year long. I have killed 8 deer this year 6 with the bow 2 with the gun. I donate 1 or 2 a year to Hunters and Farmers, I also have some none hunting family members that really like deer. The rest goes in my freezer. I killed 11 deer last year and was out of everything but burger by July. It also helps that I live in a state with a lot of deer and very liberal bag limits.

We average abou 6-7 deer a year and we always empty the freezer. This is between my 2 brothers, me, our parents and our families.

I can't remember the last time I bought beef that wasn't served at Outback. I'll take natural venison any day vs hormone and drug soaked beef.

None anymore - I give it all away. I lived on top ramen and deerburger all through highschool and college and law school. No more. It's all beef and chicken all the time for me nowadays. Occasionally, if I take a deer to the processor for somebody, I might smuggle out the sweet meat or a pack of loins, maybe even order a few hot sticks or a tube of summer sausage, but a pound or two is more than enough for me.

I just made myself sick of it, I guess.

My kids love my jerky so one goes mostly to jerky and ground the other some ground and any body in the family that wasn't as fortunate gets what they want this year I believe I'll be the unfortunate one!

I shot a 121# buck on October 18th....
I am out of venison.
I suck down at least 4-6 deers worth of meat a year...mostly in my famous, and rather delicious, venison mushroom stew.
I would tell you the recipe, but then I would have to kill you.;)

My wife and I eat 3 per year. This year, so far, I have 1 Canadian buck that dressed around 240 and 2 does from WI. If I shoot anymore does here in WI I will give them away to someone who needs it.
