Add some bleats mixed in with your grunts. A rutting buck doesn't necessarily come to a grunt call all the time, obviously but if you mix it up with a little sweet doe music it might just perk his interest enough to come check it out. Here, check this call site out:

Are you sure they were bucks grunting back or other hunters?

Rarely have I ever had the opportunity to have a calling match with a whitetail. It's not like calling turkeys. Perhaps they were grunting and chasing which had nothing to do with your calling. Either way, mix in some bleats and contact calls.

I agree with Rob but I would like to add that you might wanna try a doe decoy with some doe in estorus sent , it would hurt who knows it just might seal the deal.

It should be getting good now. I'm on my way out.

OOPS! the reason I posted this is because of my prediction. I posted the one below on 11/27/06.

I have hunted in north Ill. every day since Oct. 29th. Bow only Co. I posted a chart on the bow hunter forum of my mature buck sightings. Since I posted the chart, I've had more sightings. I've had 20 mature buck sightings in Nov., At least 10 different bucks. At this point, right now, I believe that we are at the downhill slide from the first major breeding period. It is for my area. And what I'm seeing right now is that more bucks are without does. They're searching. Night before, I saw 2 mature bucks, a 4 1/2 and a 5 1/2+, bumping does and fawns at a food source in the evening. I also saw a couple more during the last few days while driving to and from my hunting location. I think that we'll see some good action between Dec. 2-10th. I think the second breeding period will be around that time. This is my prediction.
