do does almost always have 2 fawns?, and if so, is there a 50 50 chance of one being a buck and one a doe, or are does more common than bucks, and thats why we see more does than bucks in the woods?

No, a doe usually has only one fawn her first pregnancy. The second pregnancy can be twins, depends on how much food is available and how much population pressure there is. A doe in an area with high deer pops., even if there's plenty of food due to farming, will often have one fawn, or even none. They have also been known to have 3 or more fawns, although that is much less common.

As to the sex of the fawns that is also susceptable to environmental conditions. The reason you see so many does to bucks is because their biggest predator, us, favors bucks in their kills.

I would agree with Talondale about the numbers thing. I'm not so sure about the sex ratio. I would like to see the data about that.

As far as shooting the fawns. I think you'll find most biologist or deer managers will tell you if you're trying to get control of a herd that is way over capacity, shoot anything that's brown. Get the numbers down to a manageable figure and then you start trying to control the herd for your desires. First thing.... kill them all within range. Now if you're happy with your herd you still have to shoot quite a few to keep it under control. At that point I'd steer clear of fawns because TOO many of them end up being buttons. You're better off taking an old doe who will probably have two where as a first time mom will have one more than likely. You see a young deer running around alone at this time of year it's more than likely a button driven off by mom or a bigger buck looking to make love to his mom.

I read recently that 75% of the does 2 1/2 and older bear twins, and 15% of those have triplets.

I go to cook college (the science college of Rutgers University) and have learned that deer control how many fawns they have by the amount of food available. this of course was only study. but the study showed that females release more eggs to be fertilized based upon available food. triplets or twins occur when there is alot of food and single or no eggs are fertilized if there is a very high demand on the available food.

i also found it interesting that if a doe has two fawns, they can each have a different father. interesting.
